Elisabella -> African American is not an ethnicity. (9/9/2009 7:49:34 PM)

I was just wondering if any blacks/people of African descent outside of the US are annoyed at the ethnicity choices offered.

Wouldn't it suck to be a Black European and have to choose between "African American" and "Other" for your race? Or is the ethnicity filtered somehow so "African American" turns into "Black" for members outside the US?

I know this is totally random but..."Black" is a race/ethnicity. "African American" is a heritage/nationality combination.

After working for nearly 20 years in " Black" neighborhoods in Milwaukee,  ( Phone repair )I know from experience that most would prefer 'Black'. I had many friends and co workers in 'the hood'. Not a scientific pol, just common knoweldge from my experiences.

Hi servant,

I've experienced the same - most Blacks I know call themselves "Black," just like most Whites I know say "White" instead of "Caucasian." I can see how things like CM would be more formal, but still, the term "Black" is more encompassing than "African American."

I remember reading a blog once by an Indigenous Australian woman, she said that she was asked once if it was hard to care for "African-American hair" and her response was something like "Well, I'm neither African nor American so I wouldn't know."

There are a couple of threads through out CM that have my view on this so called "Politicaly Correct" term.

I did find it funny when a white male won an African American scholarship. He was born in Africa and then imigrated to the United States. So when asked or needed to put the answer on an application, he always answered with "African American" The NAACP is still not happy him winning the scholarship.

I'm Jewish, and I have heard the term used to describe both the heritage and the religion.  We are a confused people.

I'm of Scottish and NOrwegian ancestry.  Born and raised in the US... what does that make me? LOL

Most black folks I know prefer to be called black, too.  Unless theyre from a different country, then they prefer to be identified by which country they come from.

Hmm... Would I be brown?  There are way too many ethnicities that could be covered in my color.  I am hispanic and french.  I think if I were a color it would be caffe latte.

Also don't forget that there are Africans with white skin, as well as Mexicans.

African American doesn't appear as a choice here. It would probably be 'Black Other' as opposed to 'Black British'.

The problem is people have to pick one of the options and you can't account for all combinations so quite a few pick the 'not represented' option, or they also pick that if they don't like intrusive surveys that mostly do nothing for them.

Most blacks call themselves nigger. Actually, whites call them that too. At least in the school I went to.

The school of rap?

xoxkittenxox -> RE: African American is not an ethnicity. (9/10/2009 7:48:42 AM)

No. But they all acted like it. I lived in Citrus Heights, Sacramento, CA. It wasn't even in "the hood". They all just acted like it.

One of my exes used to say I was mocha which I always liked.

My parents refer to themselves as Fiji-Indians but I always consider myself an Aussie as saying Fijian-Indian-Australian would be a bit of a mouthful  [:D]

CalifChick -> RE: African American is not an ethnicity. (9/10/2009 8:42:54 AM)

I've never been too keen on the "African-American" label, because my ancestors came from France to the US (by way of Quebec), and there's never a choice for me - "French-American".  What's that you say?  I wasn't born in France?  Yeah no kidding.  And most of the black people I know have never been to Africa, let alone being born there.

Pfffffffft.

Missokyst -> RE: African American is not an ethnicity. (9/10/2009 8:54:38 AM)

My people were somewhat nomadic, and travelled between Mexico and the Santa Barbara.  Technically my heritage is Spanish, Native North American, and French.   I am not sure if that would add a bit of cinnamon to the Latte.
Color is not an ethnicity.  I call myself American being of people happened to live in Ca before it was part of the USA.  Long title.  But I identify that way because many people still assume that heritage puts you in a lessor catagory.

Who invented this African-American "label" and to what use? It is not as if we can't see what their roots are.
( .... European asking..)
