He's one of the last of the true country storytellers, that's why. Nothing short of a bona fide genius. Couldn't agree with you more. I have every album he has put out (except for Shut Up and Die Like an Aviator) as well as some cool bootlegs of him in concert. Since discovering his music I have started exploring the genre, the roots country storyteller type of music. Its really folk music in the real sense, music for and about regular folk. Guy Clark is somebody I have started listening to...not as good as Earle, but he has some good songs. I'm not one to get excited about celebrities at all, but a few years ago while traveling I struck up a conversation in a coffee shop with a friendly man with a pleasant face and a calm demeanor, and he mentioned he was a musician on the road with his wife, also a musician/singer. Said something about how he met her when he was playing in her brother's band, and something about the way he said it made me instantly realize he was married to Steve Earle's sister. Boy, did we have something to talk about then. Terrific guy, and I really enjoyed meeting him. It was very exciting to meet someone who'd been a part of so many albums that have meant so much to me over the years. I'm going to see Guy Clark this Thursday, I believe. I've caught him a number of times, and the only thing that changes about him is that it's somehow an even richer experience each time. If you're really developing a taste for this genre, you should check out Townes Van Zandt, if you haven't already. He came out of that same early 70s West Texas alt-country, beat-poet-with-cowboy-boots germinator that spawned Clark, Joe Ely, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, and Jerry Jeff Walker. The last song on Earle's "El Corazon" is a tribute to him; can't recall the name at the moment, just the lyrics. Earle worshipped the guy. Said one time, "Townes Van Zandt is absolutely the best songwriter in the world, and I'll stand on Bob Dylan's coffee table in my cowboy boots and say that to his face." To which Van Zandt commented, "I've met Bob Dylan, and I've met his bodyguards. No offense to Steve, but I don't believe he's going to get within ten feet of Bob's coffee table." Or something to that effect. If you're not familiar with him, I think you'd love the guy. "My Mother The Mountain" is a good album to start with.
