ORIGINAL: SpinnerofTales quote:
I wish he'd learn to keep his damned mouth shut on issues that are none of his damned business. It happens I agree with him this time, but that's beside the point. You'd think he'd have learned something from making such a fool of himself calling out the cop in the Gates incident, but apparently not. The arrogance of this man amazes me. Focus on doing your own job in a professional manner, Mr. President, and stop running your mouth about things that are no concern of yours. quote:
ORIGINAL: ThatDamnedPanda I don't think it was that bad, Panda. He was sitting around, getting ready for an interview that hadn't officially begun and the interviewer asked if his daughters were upset by what happened with Kanye West. All Obama did was say "he's a jackass", which is what everyone who heard about the story thought. It isn't like he held a press conference or issued a proclamation. As I've said before, anyone in that office who is afraid to say something for fear that someone would get all wee-wee'd up about it, to coin a phrase, wouldn't open his mouth for an unscripted word. quote:
ORIGINAL: SoulPiercer I think I can deal with the current president calling Kanye a jackass. You both make good points, and it's hard to disagree with them. I just see it differently, for a few reasons. First of all, it's not just this one comment that rankles me. It's a pattern. He opines quite freely and quite frequently on the mundane issues of the day, is occasionally quite caustic in his criticisms, and I just happen to have some rather old-fashioned views about the office he holds. I have a great deal of respect for the presidency (admittedly, probably too much), and from a philosophical perspective, I personally prefer a president who holds himself a little bit above such picayune kerfuffles. I'd just prefer a little more professionalism, a little more imperial detachment from such minor squabbles. A sense that he's focused on somewhat loftier issues than who got arrested in Boston last night or who dissed whom at some awards show. And from a practical standpoint, I don't think it's doing him any good politically at a time when he really can't afford to associate himself with any more controversy than he's already embroiled in. OK, granted, taking a shot at Kanye West is a pretty safe bet; not many people are going to disagree with him on that. But as I said, it's a pattern with him, and if you make these little cracks on a semi-regular basis, it's just a matter of time before you overstep on something a little less unequivocal and piss off a lot of people you really didn't need to piss off and can't really afford to piss off - as he did when he criticized the Cambridge police before he knew all the facts. I just think the man would be better served with a little more Cal Coolidge (in that regard, at any rate), and a little less Harry Truman.
