So no more Redskins!

Couldn't happen to a better team, owner or a group of fans!

In a country where disagreeing with a black politician brands you as a racist nothing surprises me.

DomKen -> RE: Looks like Braves on the war path, there, In Old DC (9/17/2009 7:14:09 PM)

I find it shocking that this is still being argued about. Would it be acceptable to have sports franchises with deragatory terms for other ethnic groups as nicknames?

FatDomDaddy -> RE: Looks like Braves on the war path, there, In Old DC (9/17/2009 7:45:15 PM)

Ken... we agree on something!

I CAN'T wait until the Fore... err Redskins are forced to give up their name!

Hail VIC TOR Y!

We have been going through the same thing.

In Cleveland it has become a constant debate.

I fail to see how the name Indians is in any way offensive or how our logo is either.

If you check out part 1 of the following link the best is toward the end when a fan debates a protester and tells him he is Irish and proud that Notre Dame uses the Fighting Irish name.

It seems as if it is a vocal minority, with too much time on their hands, that believes it to be offensive to their heritage.

In a unanimous vote, the Seminole tribal council endorsed the use by Florida State University of the Seminoles as both a nickname and a mascot. The tribe recognized that FSU honored the tribe's contribution to the state rather than demeaned it and demanded that all organizations recognize its word on this matter.

Now that's nuts. Redskins? That I can see. It is a derogatory, much like Dago, Wop, or Kike would be if someone named a sports team after Italians or Jews. I can understand why people would be upset about it.

But Indians? For christ's sake, get a life. OK, fine, the old mascot may have been offensive. But the name? Come on. Next thing you know, you won't be able to name teams after anyone. The descendants of California's settlers will sue to make the 49ers change their name; the Packers will have to find a new name so as not to offend anyone who works at meatpacking plants, and the Vikings will have to officially change their name to the Queens so that the Scandinavian countries don't unite and declare war on the US. This politically correct crap is just absurd. If I owned the team, I'd tell them to shove it. What a bunch of crybabies.

DomKen -> RE: Looks like Braves on the war path, there, In Old DC (9/17/2009 9:12:24 PM)

I've got no problem with Indians or Seminoles as team names. Redskin OTOH...

FatDomDaddy -> RE: Looks like Braves on the war path, there, In Old DC (9/17/2009 9:20:53 PM)

Hey I am usually all for the team name totems (that's what they are) and if some community, is upset over an Indian mascot for teams named Braves, Warriors, Chiefs ect... well there are always, Zulu Braves, Ninjia Warriors and Gaelic Chiefs mascots to adopt, honor and keep the name...

But like I said... I hope the PC Cops get the Redskins! Boo Hoo Hoo[:(]

I was wondering how they got by with it for this long. Even colleges with respectful names having to do with indians were forced to change. I figured it was only a matter of time before it hit the pro sports teams too.

SpinnerofTales -> RE: Looks like Braves on the war path, there, In Old DC (9/18/2009 7:26:06 AM)

Who can figure out these Native Americans? All the settlers did was come to their country, use every method of destruction available to them, including biological warfare to kill them, broke just about every peace agreement they entered into with them, segregate them into what were essentially concentration camps and pretty much make them into the poorest, shortest lived racial group in the country. Why the hell should they be so over sensitive? After all, we are giving them tax free cigarettes and booze.

Just goes to show you. Some people have no sense of gratitude.

Not all colleges...

Florida State was already mentioned, Alcorn State is keeping Braves, Central Michigan, San Degio State,... remember...mot of this nonsense is started to get those filing the suit, notice and money and they tend to find a few useful idiots on thier to help that end.

FatDomDaddy -> RE: Looks like Braves on the war path, there, In Old DC (9/18/2009 12:54:41 PM)

BTW... here are the real lyrics to Hail to the Redskins. (The NFL forced them to change them in the late 60'ws but anyone who went to RFK in the 80's always heard the crowd sing the orginal words and if one goes to FedEx Field today, you'll hear it loud and clear from lots of folks)

Hail to the Redskins
Hail Vic-tor-y
Braves on the Warpath
Fight for old Dixie
Scalp 'em, swamp 'em -- We will take 'em big score
Read 'em, weep 'em, touchdown - we want heap more
Fight on, Fight on -- 'Till you have won
Sons of Wash-ing-ton. Rah!, Rah!, Rah!
Hail to the Redskins
Hail Vic-tor-y
Braves on the Warpath
Fight for old Dixie

Reactionaries whining because of progress: nothing new here.

SilverMark -> RE: Looks like Braves on the war path, there, In Old DC (9/18/2009 1:54:38 PM)

Here in the state with the starting point of the trail of tears we have the Atlanta Braves....and nary a peep about it being anything more than a name. Now, many years ago they did get rid of Chief Knock a Homa and that rather distorted Native American face on the uniform. I guess it is a native thing and I just don't understand....although to some degree I do empathize with the argument against such names... but, I wouldn't find the "Fighting White Boys" derogatory or the "Washington WASPs"....hell Atlanta once had the Atlanta Crackers....never quite understood the term "Cracker" as derogatory....but then again it wouldn't upset me if there was a Houston Honkys....or Wilmington Whities....maybe it's just Me!

Irishknight -> RE: Looks like Braves on the war path, there, In Old DC (9/18/2009 2:50:46 PM)

Doesn't Florida State pay for the right to use the name "Seminole?"

I don't.  That is what they refered to themselves as, many many years ago.

I think it is bullshit anyways.

Much more productive would be to take back the word, or let it fall into use as a baseball team referent anyways.

shanlone -> RE: Looks like Braves on the war path, there, In Old DC (9/18/2009 3:10:18 PM)

How about we just call that team the "Washington Assholes"?

"[Sport] is, indeed, the self-consciousness and self-esteem of man who has either not yet won through to himself, or has already lost himself again. But man is no abstract being squatting outside the world. Man is the world of man—state, society. This state and this society produce [sport], which is an inverted consciousness of the world, because they are an inverted world. [Sport] is the general theory of this world, its encyclopedic compendium, its logic in popular form, its spiritual point d'honneur, its enthusiasm, its moral sanction, its solemn complement, and its universal basis of consolation and justification. It is the fantastic realization of the human essence since the human essence has not acquired any true reality. "

"Sport is the religion of the people." Thanks, Karl [8D] .

Irishknight -> RE: Looks like Braves on the war path, there, In Old DC (9/18/2009 8:37:06 PM)

Can't sport just be something thats fun?
