NY is too visible, and has too many news sources, for this to 'go away'. Once the barbs started flying it created a no win situation for the Administration.

The question is, would the situation for the democrats (since this is very much a political, not a policy matter) be worse or better under "Governor Giuliani"?

Enough of an issue for the Democrats and Democratic party of NY State - sure. Direct involvement of the White House, would indicate a worry about Guiliani from the White House. Is that better for the national Democratic Party?

Worse. You want as many governors as possible to be of your own party. Governors make numerous appointments that have a significant effect at the national level. Think about how differently the 2000 presidential election might have turned out if the Florida Secretary of State hadn't been that wacko fundamentalist conservative Kathleen Harris.

That he was a incumbent anything is unprecedented. I'm bewildered why you don't think it's significant.

Considering how conservative you are, and how liberal I am, I often reflect upon how remarkable it is that we agree on so very many things. Almost to the point that it sometimes surprises me when we don't. But perhaps this is one of those issues that serve as a reminder that even though we often arrive at the same conclusion, we generally find our ways there by approaching from very different directions. I don't think either of us is going to really "get" where the other is coming from on that particular question, unless we hash it out over a beer or two this weekend at Folsom.

By the way, anyone else lose their quote button tonight? Or is it just something with my browser?

Sure, but I'll again ask the fundamental question; why is this a Presidential priority? There is a primary election which should take care of it. If Cuomo is so good and Paterson is so bad; the registered Democratic voters will have the opportunity to let their feelings known in the spring.

The only logical answer I can give to that - and it's only a shot in the dark - is that Obama wanted to let Paterson know early on that if he did run, he shouldn't expect any support from the White House. Try to nip him in the bud, to keep Cuomo from having to wage a potentially divisive primary battle that might have left him more vulnerable in the general election. But even that only makes a certain amount of sense, because if that were really Obama's intent, there are a lot of ways that he could have floated it to Paterson that would have been a lot more tactful and productive than the manner that is being so widely reported.

So I don't know what to tell you. As best as I can see, it seems to have been clumsily and amateurishly handled by the Obama people. We don't know the whole story, but from what we do know it seems like a head-scratcher.
