You object to the film, or how it was presented, and/or no follow through with a discussion on extremism from both sides of that issue? I can see how this film would be great to teach how radicals and fanatics can form on different sides, in opposition to one another, and how that can negatively impact everyone. This is supposed to be a leadership class, hell maybe the effect on this girl is exactly what is needed, to root out those that have no business being in leadership roles.

I object to this film based upon the message of hatred and the images applied. Its amusing to see how this is ok for schools, yet a children's song is not. Either way, they are being brain washed... just in different directions.

In the article quoted, the lesson was on extremism. I hate extremism myself and think everyone should. The supposed hatred-based objection is based not he assumption that the lesson is about the muslim faith as a whole, it's not. It's about the extremism some use in achieving their goals.

Im sure you only see two kinds of parents. I dont fall into either category.

No one ever thinks that they fall into the categories. Sadly, only time will tell. And often, when the truth is revealed, it's too late to do anything about it.

Im sure you could go into why you believe parenting problems exist. if you knew, your practice would be far too busy to allow you any time on line.

No I wouldn't. Because I wouldn't care enough to have a 'practice.' Just because I see the plethora of mistakes that parents make doesn't mean I want to devote myself to correcting them. It just means I have that much more to laugh at.

Now moving on to homeschooling:

From my experience kids that were exclusively home-schooled are usually very intelligent and curious, but also socially underdeveloped, usually less mature and poorly able to deal with personal conflict. It's the same argument I was making above, really... unless you're captain of the football team school is a nasty place at times. Learning how to deal with assholes, morons, and hardasses probably ultimately was a more valuable skill set for me than calculus.

Which is what the karate is for

Well, in my case actually yes... but I was more talking about social difficulties.

People have the belief that children who are homeschooled are socially stunted. That just isnt true. Im sure if they are kept isolated back on the "farm"... maybe. with enough sports, camps, clubs, ect, children will always find ways to be bullies.. and find children to bully... no matter where they are.

Found this on Fark, under a title i dont think needs to be addressed here. However, the idea that this is being shown to our children... even at 17.. is extremely disturbing. To realize that something she was shown at 17 in our public schools has caused her to seek counseling .. thats sad... thats scary... and i think we have alot to be worried about when it comes to our schools.

NO WAY!!!

That is REALITY. That is what is going on in the world. If someone doesn't like it, tough shit.

If everybody knew that this type of violence was going on in the world, maybe more people would actually do something about said violence.

The kids today need to grow a pair! They get bussed "door to door" in school buses!
In my father's generation, "The Greatest Generation" they were dropping out of school at 16 to lie their way into the Navy and Marines to "kill Japs!"

Okay I had my 18 year old son watch the vid, and his comment " Yep there sure are some crazy and whacked people in the world. Dad did you know what they did during the crusades? I mean both sides?"

Smart kid. Sounds like he's got a grasp on things. Bet you don't hear much 'whining' from him.

Not since he was a baby. Grumbles on rare occasions. He also asked me who this girl was supposed to be learning to lead.

The title of the topic is promoting hatred, but I don't think the schools are promoting it, I think some of the spin doctors are.

Usually schools do have the sense to send home a note telling parents that an extremely upsetting movie will be shown, in case a child cannot cope well. Remember, today we don't expel children with medical/emotional difficulties nor do we keep them in special classes. A child with an anxiety disorder would have a severe reaction to such a film.

I'm 54 and I won't watch horror movies because they give me nightmares. I have no problem with a kid who had that reaction. I would imagine the gamers in the class took it in stride, since they will have seen and enacted many such acts of violence.

As far as the all homeschooled kids are socially poor, I think that may be backwards. In many cases the child is homeschooled because they have problems with socialization. And they need to be out of a situation they cannot cope with until the root cause has been identified and treated, if possible. Plus any child who has been repeatedly and severely bullied should be out of that situation, and educated in a safe environment.

Although there is no way I could home school high school, did one year of middle school when she couldn't cope with social and medical issues at the same time. High school was in a private school with small classes and teachers who watched for, and did not permit bullying. And far superior academics.
