I've started a new business. It means I can't be hiding in the background anymore. I have to deal with people and sell myself artistically.
This has been my downfall in the past. In real life I am extremely shy and have little self confidence.
But now I have to pay bills and I am motivated to succeed to show that I can do it to myself and the people that love me and to show my daughters that I can do it. I want to be a good roll model for them.
I have 200% support of the people that matter in my life.
How do I do this?

acting has always done it for me; get into character and go for it

If the part that is uncomfortable and intimidating is "dealing with people and selling yourself artistically," make sure you don't put yourself so far out of your comfort zone that you can't focus on your core competencies.  I might be reading this wrong, but if you are good at skill A, but not good at SELLING skill A, don't sabotage yourself by putting the sole responsibility of selling it be your success or failure.  There are people who are great at SELLING, but have zero talent in your skill A; in other words, find people who can sell your talent and let them do what they do best: Sell.  You focus on what you are good at, and continue to put out exceptional work.

Be as knowlegable in your bisiness as possible. This will give you the credentials you desire and the confidence that you know your stuff. Coming across as knowlegable in your field will put people at ease and how that you are the one they want to hire because you know your stuff.

One foot in front of the other... breath... one challenge at a time... having people to support and wanting success are motivators that are hard to deny. When it gets tough, take it in a moment, not thinking of the next challenge. Look yourself in the mirror and tell yourself all the things you just said about what you want and why you need to do it and that you can do it and do that often. Stop telling yourself that you are shy or can't or how you may feel limited. Feed on the beauty of who you are and what can happen. Little by little, you will find what you need to do it. Have faith in you...

Or picture yourself at a keyboard and go girl! lol I know you can do it!

I wish you every success!

Aileen, not knowing what type of business it is it may be helpfull to separate or compartmentalise the differant facets of the business.
Not enough information here to really be able to help out I think.

Aileen, first, congrats on the business.

Second.... you are beautiful, and you are intelligent, and you are funny, and you are talented. Believe in yourself, and believe that all of your wonderful attributes will push you to success. If you get too nervous, close your eyes a second, and smile. I know that sounds goofy as hell, but I've found it to actually work, for crying out loud. It breaks the tension, and allows me to "reset" myself, mentally.

Any detractors...my experience has been they have the most to hide- the most gunk in the closet.

No matter how bad the economy gets people will buy where there is value and good service.

Well there is always that stand by trick of picturing everyone else naked! You should have seen me for my first speech! OMG... I was shaking and you could hear it in my voice for the first couple of sentences and believe me... I had prepared in front of a mirror the whole night before. Plus I had an emergency call that took over an hour with another shelter in the middle of dying my hair a darker brown thinking it might help me being less red/blond headed type. After all these were doctors, the medical community and social services and I had broken all the rules and it was public and in the paper. I knew I would catch it!

So with bright red hair I took on a redhead attitude that no matter what, they were not going to get me and I floored them and even shut one social worker up real quick when she challenged what I did that broke the rules of moving my family into the shelter I ran. Is it safe for your children she asks? I said if it is safe for the homeless children, it is safe for my children.

You get an attitude... no one is taking you out.

I reread the post.   I have found that the younger generation can tell you what is "in".  So ask them.  Ask them what they think will sell.  People will buy just about anything if it is marketed right.

Hey, Im a "photographer" too. Any of you ladies want some *pictures* taken? ;)

Aileen, then have fun with it! Be a little creative! And, you need to let people *know* that you're a photographer so that means advertising!
Get business cards printed up and hand them out to *everyone!*
The Yellow Pages can be expensive but it could very well be worth it just to get your name out here. And have some samples of your work to show to potential customers in black and white as well as color.
Hope this helps!

I have only read the OP but my first thought was based on a very successful entreupener i know who said that pretty much he fakes it until he makes it. It doesn't mean he puts on a facade, it means he uses what be BELIEVES and UNDERSTANDS his passion and what it would mean to be the confident secure social person and he does his best to appear so and banks a lot on his passion for his business because he believes in it. I told him that is a facade, and he said no, its only a facade if you don't believe it. He said he uses what he believes and then projects that belief. Use your belief in what you are offering to project your 100% confidence that those you sell too will be as pleased as you are. They want your confidence that what you are selling them is the best purchase for them. They want to feel YOUR belief in your product -- project that because you believe it and you will be fine.

You take one appearance, meeting, social connection at a time. As the good wife says, no it doesn't get any easier -- you just get better at it.

What the mind can conceive and believe the mind can achieve.

Go out into that big bad world, and act *********AS IF*********

as if your shit dont stink, even though your farts give you away constantly.
as if you are damn good at what you are doing
as if you are successful.
as if you are confident

Aileen, of course you can act......(think about it)

Oh, Master!!!! You're so big!!!!!!! Oh, Master I need it in the ass right now!!!! Oh, Master, you are so huge I feel like I am filled with light.

Or----

Yes, Reverend, these are my joys, my reason for living, my angelic and reverent girls, they all want to grow up and be nuns, you know.....

Or------

Mom, I have no idea where those girls got that from

Or------

You are the best daddy in the world

Or

They don't have to know you're a tubgirl, got nothing to do with you and what you are selling, give me a reason, give me a cause to pick you......

Go, and sell some more....... Jesus to Tubgirl (it's in the bible, look it up)

great!!!! now be more helpful to Aileen the cocklicker here, and tell her how and where she might sell some of her work online, and what sort of thing sells, and what sort of prices she can expect to glean, so that she can get pissed on all she wants, buy OrangeJuice for enemas AND feed her family, fadedshadow.

Aileen, every business has two sides: the side that generates what is sold (in your case,  photography), which is unique to each business, and then the stuff that's common to all businesses, such as keeping the books, and sales.  It's frequently recommended to farm out as much as possible of the second kind of things - you can hire an accountant for the books for a few hours each month.  Would it be worthwhile to see if you can pay someone commission to sell your stuff?  That would free up more time for you to do photography, and if he/she is a better salesperson than you, it would increase income.
