I think that any construction jobs in Chicago would be minimal. Most of the infrastructure is already in place. Some events would have been held in Wisconsin. It would not have helped the unemployment numbers as it isn't being held until 2016, 7 years from now.

Sure. Building the olympic village, 80,000 stadium, aquatics center and all the rest that was slated for new construction would have been built in an afternoon by 2 guys. If you haven't even seen the plan stop commenting on it.

Well said and well taken, Kirata. The Olympics is indeed a white elephant of events. It's big, important and considered "holy"...but it has a hell of a cost in upkeep and seldom pulls it's weight. I think with the economy as it is, it is perhaps just as well Chicago didn't get it.

I do find it interesting, though, that as part of the fallout of the "rip down the other party no matter what they do" attitude that is becoming general practice for both parties, it's getting harder and harder to tell if the positions taken are due to the merits or simply point taking. This is a good example of that problem.

Yea, I know what you mean. Post 37 is a good example.

I didn't have a dog in this fight, but I find it strange that Obama's being held responsible for a decision based on years of work.  Folks don't put a package together in 10 months.

One visit and speech won't make a bit of difference.  It make a nice impression, but one speech has a snowball's chance in hell of changing the decision.

Well just cause you don't see it does not mean it is not happening

Conservatives are currently gathered in Virginia for the American for Prosperity’s Defending the American Dream Summit, which features speakers such as radio host Hugh Hewitt and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich. Today when the IOC announced that the United States was eliminated from the running to host the 2016 Olympics, a room of conference attendees immediately laughed and applauded. Watch it:

The Weekly Standard “world headquarters” also erupted in cheers today at the announcement, although blogger John McCormack later changed his blog post and deleted the reference.

Half the spin is that this is nothing, Chicago is better off without the Olympics. And half the spin is that this meant everything to all Americans...

of course, maybe the fact that Rio has been trying to dig itself out of a bad rep for one of the worst kidnapping records in the past several decades has something to do with it.  If they pull this off well, with few or no incidents, they stand to gain WAY more than lose, compared to anywhere else.

Maybe I'm wrong, but from here, it would seem Chicago doesn't need the business and headaches anywhere near as much, doesn't stand to gain as much, will always have a healthy tourism trade of it's own and doesn't really so heavily on touris for its own economy.  I dunno.  I think places like Kingston Mines will be getting enough people in the door anyway.

There are a lot of people trying to make hay out of this one. As I listened to conservative and christian fundamentalist radio yesterday (I like to check on what those folks are doing) and was hearing comments like "We've got to completely reject Obama's health care bill like they completely rejected him in in Copehnagen".

I'm not going to get overly bent out of shape. I think it's kind of natural that, when you don't like a politician, you cheer at his failures. still, I'm not going to get all bent out of shape about either the issue or the reaction.

Still, the reaction by the right wing is telling: they rejoiced at an American city losing out on jobs and an influx of foreign money to their economy. We can only draw one conclusion from this, and that is that the right wing WANTS AMERICA TO FAIL.

Republicans, why do you HATE AMERICA so much?

How do you extrapolate that the right wants America as a whole to fail when there is only evidence that they enjoy it when Obama fails?

How can we extrapolate that the left wanted America as a whole to fail when there was only evidence that they wanted Bush II to fail?

How can we extrapolate that the right wanted America as a whole to fail when there was only evidence that they wanted Clinton to fail?

How can we extrapolate that the left wanted America as a whole to fail when there was only evidence that they wanted Bush I to fail?

How can we extrapolate that the left wanted America as a whole to fail when there was only evidence that they wanted Reagan to fail?

How can we extrapolate that the right wanted America as a whole to fail when there was only evidence that they wanted Carter to fail?

Stop me if you've heard this joke already.

...sleeping on this--- it is key to NOTE!

1.  many did not see Chicago and RIO full presentations which are posted link above.
2.  No one seen all 4 presentations.

How then can one SAY- it was fair or not fair?

A key piece of info is 11 mins into the RIO presentation.
That being that the head of Brazil Central bank backs the bid and showed up to present.

Now- being we are in a dollar collapse- (lets not get me started- hicccup),  and the credibility of our central bank 'leaders,
being that we promise alot- and then come up short.

Talk is cheap.   Chicago had no central bank to back this bid.  and that might signal to youns- who do not like gold or silver- as to WHOM   REALLY runs the world.

See?

I was wondering how long it would be before someone mentioned the choice didnt rest with chicago due, in big part, to our economy.

Actually, I think it went more to Rio because the Olympics haven't yet been held in South America... and they could use an economic shot in the arm more than some...

But the real reason they chose Rio: "Hot South American Babes"

Yup, bad economy now with the most anti-business administration in modern times. There's no way to know if we'll be in recovery or depression in 2016. If it's depression then the last place on earth you'll want to be is anywhere near a major US city.

Oh, and the little gem that Chicago's bid placed the major event infrastructure in places that are currently slum housing owned by Obama associates who would make millions during the required property sales probably had something to do with it. Apparently the olympic committee has broader news sources than NBC, CBS, CNN and MSNBC and apparently the cult of personality surrounding Obama doesn't extend to all foreigners.

Another person who never saw the proposal telling tall tales about it. What was your source for this BS?

The fact is that the only property not already a city owned park or existing sporting complex slated for development was the Olympic Village. Which would have been built on the site of the shuttered Michael Reese Hospital, which was owned and operated by a for profit hospital company out of Arizona not Obama associates and definitely not slum housing.

Frankly, I think it has a lot less to do with the political situation, etc, as it does with the fact that, although Chicago is a fun city, it's not an Olympic class city.  In fact, despite the fact that I kind of really like Chicago, I can imagine fewer cities that would be a worse place for the Olympics.

Rio, on the other hand, I think is an awesome choice.

Tokyo also, great city, but, would have been a terrible place for the Olympics.  Just because a city is freakin' massive, doesn't make it Olympic quality.

The Olympics, in Chicago, honestly, in my opinion, would have completely sucked.  And in the long run, it would not have helped the city any.  It was just a lose - lose situation for everyone involved.

Explain what you mean by olympic class.

Of course Chicago would have thrown a great Olympics...
