So, not a Catholic here, but know lots of them. Fat Tuesday, Shrove Tuesday, or as the Irish, and others, prefer "Pancake Tuesday" (that was a fun day), gives way to Ash Wednesday and religious observance.

So, what did you give up for Lent and why? Do you think Christians are missing out or have the better end of the deal with their lack of sacrifice?

KatyLied -> RE: Lent! (3/2/2006 10:10:17 AM)

When I ended my Catholic marriage, I stopped giving up stuff. But I guess, once a Catholic always a Catholic. So.....if I had to give up something dear it would be iced tea or coffee, those are things that would give me pause more than once a day for missing them.

I decided that this year I would give up being Christian. (Just kidding. I did that nearly six years ago.)

I have this view on Lent, though. If you're going to do something, do it whole heartedly. If you plan to give something up (or do something charitable... I'm a much bigger fan of that, and you can always justify it as giving up your time), put your soul into it. Don't just do it because it is required. It reminds me of a quote from the movie "Dogma". "I have issues with anyone who treats faith as a burden instead of a blessing. You people don't celebrate your faith; you mourn it." That really sums it up for me.

Funny Ash Wednesday story here, though. So I'm driving two blocks away from my house yesterday to go pay my car insurance bill. I get my receipt from the agent, walk back out, and my car won't start. Lovely. My Granny and Granddad live about two blocks the other direction so I give them a call to see if they'll pick me up. My Granny drives down five minutes later, and by that point my insurance agent is out trying to help me with my car. When Granny exits the car with ashes on her face, the man looks at her and says, "Ma'am, you've got dirt all over your forehead." My Granny (the classiest lady ever), looks at him with a straight face and cocked eyebrow and says, "Yes, I know. I like it there." And that was that.

(As a sidenote, my car started right up when the agent got in it. It's a nice twist, but it figures.)

True, but a Christian is technically anyone who believes in Jesus Christ as savior. Christian is just the overall classification.

Protestants and Catholics are very different, but both Christian, one not necessarily more so than the other.

I know a few Catholics who would argue that point.

Very cute. Points for politeness but negative on the lack of cultural knowledge. I usually forget about it until I see the first person. Mentally I go "What's that?" and then it hits me "Oh yeah, Ash Wednesday."

Is this more of your wonderful honor and chivalry? You give power of a woman, me, to offend you?

My statement was clear: Sure, catholics are also christian, but catholicism is also a very specific religious structure, and the focus of this thread, versus christianity at large or another particular christian structure.

KatyLied -> RE: Lent! (3/2/2006 12:09:39 PM)

I'm not here to argue (I don't care enough about the topic of religion to get into an argrument about it!); I'm here to love.
I'm a lapsed everything....lapsed Presbyterian, lapsed Catholic. And I'm okay with that.

Episcopalians (Anglican without the Queen involved..lol) observe Lent also, as do many presbyterians, Methodists, Lutherans and Eastern Orthodox Churches. Some of them just don't stress Lenten denial.

Iron Bear, Lent isn't really a season of celebration...tis a season of sour searching and repentance.

I say: more Easter basket; less penitence!

Gosh now I just have to share...

Eddie Izzard on Easter

So the Pagan religion had very big festivals, remember, on Easter and Christmas. Christian religion came along and had very big festivals, at Easter and Christmas. Jesus died on one and was born on the other. Hmm, hmm, hmm, hmm… Cause *cough* Jesus, I do think did exist. You know, and, uh, he, uh, was a, I think, uh, a guy who had interesting ideas in the Gandhi-type area, in the, umm, Nelson Mandela-type area. You know, relaxed and groovy. And, uh, the Romans thought, “Relaxed and groovy, nooo no no no no.” Umm, so they murdered him. And kids eat chocolate eggs, because of the color of the chocolate, and the color of the…wood on the cross.

Well, you tell me! It’s got nothing to do with it, has it! You know, people going, uhh, “Remember kids,” the kids who’re eating the chocolate eggs, uhh, “Jesus died for your sins.” “Yeah, I know, it’s great! No, no no, it’s bad, it’s bad! No, it’s bad! It’s very bad. It’s terrible! Whatever you want, I mean – just keep giving me these eggs.”

And the bunny rabbits! Where do they come into the crucifixion? There were no bunny rabbits up on the hill going, “Hey – you – what, are you going to put those crosses in our – bur – warrens? We live below this hill, all right?” Bunny rabbits are for shagging, eggs are for fertility. It’s a festival – it’s the spring festival! Christmastime, you know, Jesus, uhhh, born to a big jolly guy in a red jacket. “Ho, ho, ho! Ho, ho, ho, baby Jesus! And what would you like for Christmas?” “Peace on Earth and goodwill towards men.” “Well, what about a clockwork train?” “Oh, yes, much better. Forget – forget peace on earth, I don’t care.

I gave up sex for Lent. Unfortunately my Lent has lasted for over two years.

IronBear -> RE: Lent! (3/2/2006 1:06:22 PM)

I was educated at an Anglical School which was High Anglican (virtually Catholic without Rome) as far as the Communion went and which recognise 90% of the same feast days as the Catholic Church and for the same reasons.. I hold all Holy Days of all faiths as being special and usually will have a candle burning on the Altar (Guess I'm a major purchasor of candles at my local suppliers).
