How Can We Increase Participation on the Boards?

Hmmmmm. Let's state the first obvious statisic. The majority is here for SEX!!! Or to pretend to be someone they aren't.

Other than that, many people that I've tried to encourage to read the boards go on to say that they are tired of threads where people rant, whine, and complain. It's to much Drama for them.

Now you have people who are under confident. They are too scared to make a post or a reply in fear of being slamed with a rude response or even a well mannared message that contradicts there idea. Conflict is not an option for some. The turn tail and run before deciding to debate.

We now have people who are just tired of reading the threads. After all, how often is there an original topic? After all, how many ideas have been thought of that can not be found twice with the SEARCH FUNCTION?

I've heard more than once that we aren't having enough maturity on the boards.

One more thing, the majority is here only for SEX and online masterbation material.

You forgot to mention those of us who just enjoy coming on the boards and being smartasses[:)]

Well, we could eliminate some of the illiterate piffle on the boards by banning people who refer to themselves in the third person and post in big, pink, poofy fonts accessorized with lots of tildes and asterisks. (Truth be told there is only one third person type poster that I'd keep simply because she manages to present her thoughts cogently and intelligently despite the third person point of view, so beth is more than welcome to remain IMO). I think it's rather ironic that one who is calling for less illiterate piffle is bastardizing the language in this way. I vote for giving you your own private board so the rest of us don't have to tolerate the visual cacophony of your posts.

What's worse is when people using third person switch back and forth between third and first in a single post. (yes, sissy, you did it).

candy......a wonderful thought...wishing to hear a broader range of thoughts and insights.

The old axiom comes to mined.."you can lead a horse to water but in the end you find out it's a voyeur"...or something like that could describe many that come to the boards and don't wish to be seen. T/they may agree or prefer to lurk but can T/they be counted?

I enjoy listening to A/all here....I am more aware with each visit.

There should be a HUGE bag of chocolate (the good kind!) given for every 305th post...[:-]

That is *my* opinion...

When you're ready to send the chocolate, let me know, and I'll give you my contact info.

thanks!

cloudboy -> RE: How Can We Increase Participation on the Boards? (3/4/2006 2:34:30 PM)

>Hmm, not so sure that sissy would want to see participation on the boards just for participation's sake.<

It would be an unadulterated disaster.

>the quality of posters, and the posts they make, is what is paramount, NOT the quantity of posts!<

Exactly, less is more.

>Even though only 5% of the CollarMe membership may currently post here (your statistic, but it sounds about right based on sissy's participatiion on other message boards), probably only 5% of that 5% that already post actually have something interesting to say and also know how to present it, and thus are worth the time and effort invested in the reading. More is NOT always better. Cue Bruce Springsteen: 57 channels and nothing on ...<

We are doing the best we can while you’re on hiatus.

>Much of what is already posted on the CMMB is recycled discussion and absolute illiterate piffle and thus a waste of time and bandwidth, which makes stumbling across the actual good stuff all the more difficult.<

I think we should recycle the comparative debate between BDSM love and vanilla love. Of course there’s another problem, BDSM is only so interesting --- at a point isn’t there a natural bottoming out of the subject matter, except of course for the ubiquitious posters who have something to say to everyone on every subject? (By NOT naming names, this post may survive.)

>The ideal for sissy would be a message board where almost every post one read gave you an epiphany, an orgasm, or made you snort your coffee! There are some posters on other boards than can even deliver all three experiences in a single post! Unfortunately, on the CMMB, you have to plough through literarally hundreds of posts before you stumble on one that might only come close to delivering such a payload.<

Where is this MB utopia you’ve visited?

>So why do you advocate for even more dross on the CMMB? As cloudboy stated, "less is better"!<

Dropping my name will always help you win an argument because the “cloud” in my name is pure white --- people respond to it --- unlike those grey rainclouds.

>Personally, I would advocate for much less mediocrity on the CMMB, NOT more.<

As expected, you were castigated down the line for being "an elitist.”

>Maybe, just maybe, the problem wasn't with the new people that "ran afoul of the mods" or other "sacred cow" members, but lies instead with the current standard of CollarMe moderation and/or the established CMMB clique?<

I had a post yanked wherein I seriously challenged another person to back up their words. There was nothing ab hominem there, but my “opponent” had put herself in play by making ludicrious claims. Well, thanks to the MODs, those claims still remain unchallenged. Because she got upset at what I had to say, bleep, my post was deleted. I suppose as a sub, this was an honorable role for me to play.

The lesson I have learned is, “you can’t go there.” Only by staying general and generic can you be sure pointed criticisms won’t be yanked. Sarcasm and satire are also fair game for deletion.

>You are looking at this issue completely ass-about-tit. The real loss to the CMMB is NOT the folks that have never posted, and would have nothing to say even if they did. You cannot miss what you never had! The real loss to the CMMB are the well-respected posters that did have something to say that used to post regularly and now no longer do so. The question you need to ask yourself is: "Why does the CMMB have one of the biggest attrition rates of any message board?" Only then will you start to properly comprehend the "real" problem.<

BTW, you’ve been de-pinked. I asked about this in a separate thread and the CM faithful showed little interest except for you, MH, Sir Kenin and Utopianranger. History’s in the past, didn’t you know that? Why should we care about it?

ShadeDiva -> RE: How Can We Increase Participation on the Boards? (3/4/2006 5:27:17 PM)

I will say that it is in my experience of running forums or co-moding them or just being a member - that roughly the average seems to be 1-2 vocal and active posting member per every 1000 members. This does not include the occasional poster that chimes in once or a handful of times.

If you get more than that - you are very lucky.

Of course the more activity it has, the more it encourages or inspires others to pitch in or voice *their* POV, so at a certain point of activity there is a slight snowball effect.

250 vocal and active members posting is a lot of activity - more than you'd think. More than that quickly amplifies everything.

Just my two cents on the activity dealie.

You nihilistic? Nah... Not a chance.. LOL! I was talking about Padriag's posts mysteriously dissapearing! Looks like I goofed though... and didn't respond to the right post of yours. ; }

I would recomend more topics of interest to a broader topic than stuff specific to say goreans, or specific to subs ect ect. I know there is an OT board and a random stupidity board, but I mean more general broad ended topics.

KatyLied -> RE: How Can We Increase Participation on the Boards? (3/5/2006 7:44:42 PM)

Well, I'm certain that I will be the unpopular voice here. Why not allow the message board to take it's natural course, whatever that happens to be? There will always be a ton more lurkers than posters. I don't know of a message board that isn't like that.

I'm upset that some have left, I enjoyed reading their posts and I learned a lot from their insights. I know why some have left. Perhaps they will return.

MsIncognito -> RE: How Can We Increase Participation on the Boards? (3/5/2006 8:49:16 PM)

Some people have a deep-seated need to control just about anything around them and mold their environment, including the people in it, to fit their views and likes. Normally they are called Dominants [;)]

Lordandmaster -> RE: How Can We Increase Participation on the Boards? (3/5/2006 11:34:38 PM)

It depends on what you mean by "taking its natural course." Unfortunately, any internet message board has to be moderated or it will quickly become a minefield. There are spammers, white supremacists, other assorted racists, and God knows who else out there, and if a site isn't moderated, it will become asshole-heaven. That means it's up to moderators to decide what posts are acceptable and what posts aren't--and it isn't possible for a moderator to make decisions that please everybody. So in that sense it's impossible to let a message board take its natural course. The natural course of an internet message board is to be overwhelmed by fuckwits.

If you mean just letting the ratio of posters to lurkers take its natural course, then I agree with you--provided that all potential posters know that the board exists. At this point, with a link on each CM profile to that person's forum posts (a great addition, btw), and the new icon reminding us to check out the message board, I think there's no longer much that can be done to inform people.

imtempting -> RE: How Can We Increase Participation on the Boards? (3/6/2006 2:32:46 AM)

Hey LaM thanks for informing me well not intentionally about forum posts links in profiles I never noticed as well I never look at profiles.

I also thought about bringing back a thread that I got banned for too say a comment to something that was posted but I thought the idiots I would be responding too would run off and cry to the mods and get me banned again.

Although arguments attracts people and thus having this thread means there is less arguements but less interaction...

Ah, thank you for sharing so much of yourself in your post, MsIncognito. sissy Particularly loved the stand you took on the tolerance of others. Wouldn't it be really neat if everyone like sissy was banned from the CMMB? Then you would have the CMMB all to yourself, MsIncognito, and you would only need to share your comments with others here whose opinions are carbon copies of your own. What a nirvana that would be! [;)]

So please tell, Ma'am, is it sissy's spirited opinions or the verve with which he expresses them that you so violently oppose? Exactly how was sissy bastardizing the language? Would you also like to see Jews and Blacks banned from the CMMB along with sissy? Come now, Ma'am, we're all friends here so please don't hold your feelings back or pull any punches. [:)]

Did anyone else think that it was kind of ironic that MsIncognito didn't object to beth using the third person voice, nor candystripper posting in the same size font as sissy. She only objects to both these traits when lola does them. Hmm, wonder why that is?

BTW, MsIncognito, sissy loves your tag line, Ma'am. [:D]

As Lam states, imtempting, the whole point of moderation on any message board is to prevent it from descending into chaos and anarchy and being taken over by trolls and fuckwits. It is NOT to censor contrarian or unpopular or unusual opinions. The troll moderation on the CMMB is actually very good ... but sometimes the moderation goes way beyond what is necessary simply to censor the trolls and fuckwits. So were you banned (BTW were you actually banned from the boards, or do you mean that you had a post pulled?) because you were being a fuckwit and violating the TOS, or were you censored because your opinion ran contrary to the majority of other opinions being stated on that thread? Was your crime that you actually had the gall to disagree with a CMMB "sacred cow"?

It never ceases to amaze sissy how judgmental people can become at times on this board. Their kink or lifestyle is superior but everyone else's is weird or disgusting. Their way is the right way. But the bogus censorship usually occurs when someone with lots of paddles has a posted opinion challenged by someone with just ice cream cones. Rather than handle it, they press the "Report" button and a moderator comes along and automatically decides in their favor. Hey, the "sacred cow" had gazillians of posts under their belt so they must be right, yeah? After all, more is better. Someone with four ice cream cones can't possibly know what they are talking about. Not only that the ice cream coner crossdresses, likes scat or use a weird a font color. So let's delete the weirdo's post and remove the unnecessary tension and uphold the views of the "kinky status quo."
