Well, here's another take on it, for what it's worth. An unowned slave, only has the potential to be a slave. Living by themselves, they are in fact mastering themselves. It isn't until they meet someone who is capable of mastering them personally, that they start responding to that person as a slave. This is different than them trying to "act like a slave", which again is still under their own control. I'm referring to the development of internal enslavement. This process takes time. I would say that until that happens, a slave is not going to be necessarily more reliable than a submissive, and indeed they may even be more likely to be less reliable, as a natural slave does better under someone else's rule. Just a different way of looking at it.
