the person that built my pc works for microsoft... i.e. NO DUMMY... AND gets everything at a very discounted rate... if hindsight was 20/20 i would be on a freaking e-machine right now...

this is WHY i am so freaking paranoid... he can do as he wants and i feel like a sitting duck 90% of the time... i cannot afford to replace my pc... period.

he has zero access to my pc unless it is thru a remote access which SirKenin has stated i have turned off. This isn't a family pc where everyone has their own accounts... can i explain all of this? NO... does it happen? YES

as for having anti-viruses and firewalls, who in this day and age doesn't??

All i can do is explain what is happening... on my end...

If everyone did, in fact, have anti-virus and firewall software (and used it properly) the computer repair business would drop roughly half of it's business.

Having been hacked before i would load up with security too. It's not about "hiding" anything, it is about protecting privacy, bank accounts, and things about my life in general.

Angelic, i have had that message with Yahoo, too. After i changed my password to something long and with symbols and in a foreign language (LOL) i stopped getting it. The only time i get that message now is when i log into yahoo mobile while still on my PC.

i changed my yahoo password yesterday... lol i'll rethink doing it in a foreign language tho!!! thank you owned!

Welll.. I am going to give you a little secret of the trade...

It is not IF you have anti-virus or spyware protection... It is the quality of said products that causes the problem.

For instance... Norton Antivirus and McAffee Virus scan (throw in some Dr. Solomon too) are nothing but garbage. Useless. They let in as much as they block. So, people continue with their poor habits, assuming they are protected, when in fact they are not.

The same goes for firewalls (does anyone here remember the Black Ice debacle? They never fixed it. Black Ice is still as useless as ever last I heard) If you are running software that is not up to date... You are not protected. If you are running Norton Internet Security, you might as well post your data on community bulletin boards for everyone to access.

So.... There is the secret. Just because you run a product, or products, does not necessarily mean that you are protected.

I highly recommend AVG Antivirus, Panda Titanium or Platinum, or Trend Micro Housecall products to help secure your computer.

That will be $50 please.

I never was keen on the Zonelabs product, although it does work well.. Maybe that is because it is such an anal retentive product.. I hope you have the new MS Antispyware. It is now called MS Defender Beta 2. It is really good, although MS technicians have been known to be slow to the draw with security updates, so you might want to keep that in mind and add an extra product in there such as Spybot Seek and Destroy, Ewido or Panda.

Kenin - what is your opinion regarding Avast? Many people I know use it and recommend it, also it is free for home use. I've been using it for a few years.

I do not have an opinion on Avast. I do not use it, nor do I direct any of My clients to it. All I can tell you is that I heard that it was reasonably decent, but I guess hearsay does not really help you any.

Lol I use almost ALL of the above mentioned security - and I tend to scrub my machine daily if not more than that.

I think I have almost every security and scrubber program that is decent and worthwhile, and I use them all together.

They ALL catch things that the others miss. And the top line ones that you pay for - are worth it.

I also defrag according to my usage - something most computer users don't seem to do.

As for passwords - nothing in uncrackable - but my passwords tend to be SO strong that it will stop even my dsl from working properly - it took talking through the 4th tier of tech support to figure out WHY my dsl wouldn't connect. They finally laughingly told me that my password was over-the-top secure and that they'd never in all their time fielding calls seen a password of that nature. I had to actually tone it down. lol. But hey - I wanted my dsl to be as secure as it could be - just my standard of secrity apparently is higher than their suystem could handle.

If you are really worried about security ALWAYS create random passwords. Mix numbers and lowercase AND uppercase characters and if possible and the system can handle it (and not all can) use the special characters like #$%^&*, etc. in there as well. Granted a keylogger will show these. Never click on a link in an IM or email - type it out, never download stuff of myspace or other sites like that, set your security on your browser and OS as high as possible while allowing you to surf and do your things without being held up.

I'm really anal about my security. Still means something could happen, but at least they will hopefully have to WORK at it, and it's not me just handing it to them on a silver platter complete with garnishes. Has nothing to do with hiding - and everything to do with doing my best to control what happens to my machines.

Yes, forget about that one. That one is really good, but you have to pay for it. AVG is free. I realize that NOD 32 will run as begware, but I have issues with nagware, begware and crippleware.

argi would jump in, but i'm not awake enough yet. Rah, i generally just run systematic.. and ad aware.. and spybot.. and if something special is going on.. i grab good ol Master and have him come sit down at my computer and do his thing. As for networking security i have no clue. i'd actually have to get him to come in here and write it all out. i know our network is protected every which way from sunday. Ports are closed and yadda yadda. Havent a clue and i'm not awake enough to care = )

Ok...so what is recomended in terms of keeping ones computer virus free.
I have Macafee antivirus. Just purchased and downloaded the AVG antivirus like recomended.
I also just installed Webroots Spy Sweeper.
I ran all scans of these three and got no alarms for the anti virus but my spysweeper is showing a lot of spyware 57 and counting and 90 traces and it's still running...
then I just got a message from my microsoft internet explorer saying that I have a security breach
by the Blackworm virus. What the hell is that and what do I do?
I am the most untechy person you will ever meet.
Help!!!!!

If you own your windows fair and square see SirKenin's post on the beta for microsoft defender. get it, it know what to do.

Oh, yeah, spysweeper is some good shit, in my estimation. You should shut down all the other stuff you got running including us, and let it wipe it. Then reboot and before you do anything, run it again. You probably need to re-set some of your IE settings and be a little slower to say yeah to the auto download of some stuff.
