To debate it in abstract is one thing... it's quite another to see someone like PFC Wendi smiling and giving the "thumbs up" as we allow a handcuffed prisoner (in all likelihood, some guy we just pulled off the streets in Bhagdad because we thought he looked suspicious...) to have his cock bitten off by an attack dog, the prisoner's blood flooding the dirty tiled floor.

(snip)

I have to ask for a source on this one...

BTW, it's kind of interesting that it is now a Democratic Administration that is fighting to keep these photos from being released.

As to the rest of what you wrote: I can only say that shit happens during war, and that anybody that is guilty of such things should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. I also suppose you would like to see the photos of various "interview" sessions that were outsourced (Egypt is the one fun one that comes to mind) during the Clinton presidency? Afterall, we are discussing this so that the world knows that we take these things seriously, and not for partisan reasons...

Personally I don't understand the "security of the troops" line. Its not like the troops are peacefully playing baseball in camp like in Germany. Its not like their opponents are not already filled with hate and fervency, it takes a shitload of both to blow yourself up.
Just who or what would be endangered by the publication of the photos...other than some reputations in Washington that is?

Just a simple thought on that question. How long do you think it would take for such photos to be used for propaganda purposes, it wouldn't matter whether or not these were from isolated incidents. THe photos could and would be used to portray all the troops as criminals and sadists, thus creating further tensions and possible threats on the ground.

Like I have stated, and was stated in the original post; investigations have been and possibly could still be going on, arrests and convictions have occurred (as they should). I am all for the release of information and photos such as these, it just needs to be at a time when it doesn't effect the safety of the men and women on the ground.

How long's that going to take, though? There's no end in sight to this mess yet.

I suppose that would depend on what strategy is adopted by the powers that be... I would also add that the craziness in Pakistan over the last day or so, isn't all that promising for anything being solved "soon".

I was thinking of Iraq not Afghanistan. Fair point, though.

The Legislative branch (Congress) does not have Constitutional authority to interfere with the Judical branch (Courts).

Not exactly.  The Courts' role is to interpret the law of the land, as defined by Congress. Congress DOES in fact have the authority to pass new laws, which the courts have the obligation to carry out.

Congress does NOT have the authority to simply override a court's decision, as shown in the Terry Schiavo case.

The interesting question here is if Congress has the authority to pass a law containing a provision specifically to counter a court action, as well as having the Executive branch request that implementation of the court decision be delayed so that the countering legislation be given time to pass.
