How can the Norwegian Nobel Committee nominate Barack Obama for the peace prize after only twelve days in office? Oh, well, after Al Gore won the prize for a slide show, I guess anyrthing is possible. Does this imply that the Nobel Committee has become politicized?

Maybe so. Do you think the people complaining about it might have ideological axes to grind as well, perhaps?

The Committee didnt nominate him.

Nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize
Every year, the Norwegian Nobel Committee sends out thousands of letters inviting qualified people to submit their nominations for the Nobel Peace Prize. The names of the nominees and other information about the nominations cannot be revealed until 50 years later.

Qualified Nominators
The right to submit proposals for the Nobel Peace Prize shall, by statute, be enjoyed by:

1. Members of national assemblies and governments of states;
2. Members of international courts;
3. University rectors; professors of social sciences, history, philosophy, law and theology; directors of peace research institutes and foreign policy institutes;
4. Persons who have been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize;
5. Board members of organizations who have been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize;
6. Active and former members of the Norwegian Nobel Committee; (proposals by members of the Committee to be submitted no later than at the first meeting of the Committee after February 1) and
7. Former advisers appointed by the Norwegian Nobel Institute.

The Nobel Peace Prize may also be awarded to institutions and associations.

For tazzygirl:

He may have been nominated by the Nobel Committee since your sixth condition for being a qualified nominator reads:

6. Active and former members of the Norwegian Nobel Committee; (proposals by members of the Committee to be submitted no later than at the first meeting of the Committee after February 1

My only point is that I have yet to hear what qualifications he has shown to merit this award. Sorry, I don't get it.

No one really "gets it". We figure its one of two things.

1) He is so different, and has been working hard towards opening up communications between nations again, as well as speaking out on both the ecology and nuclear arms.... its almost like a vote of hope in his message.

or

2) he isnt Bush. Many in the global community hated Bush enough to see this happen.

And, yes, while the last is possible in the list i provided, its more likely someone DID place him up for nomination. Once nominanted, he is in contention, along with 205 other people/organizations this year.

To be fair, his not being Bush has been steadily dwindling ever since he was elected.

You know, there's 300 million or so people in this country, what are the odds that one of them wins it and that he *just happens to be* The President of the United States of America!!!
Are there any actuaries in here?

well, I guess I see your point popeye, maybe it would help catalyse the issue if you were to enumerate some of the many things you did last year to ease tensions in the world right here, or even this year, and maybe we can get you in for next year.

the statistical argument you make is invalid.
What are the chances that I would see a minnesota license plate, NUE 505 out of all the possible license plates on the globe?

Answer: 100 fuckin' percent, it is my license plate.

Ron

He's spent the last nine months doing everything that Bush ever did, though: less wellfare funding, more troops in Afghanistan, a new snooping Czar for intrnet wiretapping, like that. All that stuff is very deeply Bush, and I don't recall him promising any of it before the election.
