By ERICA WERNER (AP) – 16 minutes ago WASHINGTON — With support from a lone Republican, a key Senate committee Tuesday approved a middle-of-the-road health care plan that moves President Barack Obama's goal of wider and affordable coverage a giant step closer to becoming law.

From your source, Lucy...

quote:

Health care legislation is expected to be on the Senate floor the week after next, said a spokesman for Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada. But it won't be the Baucus bill. Reid will combine the Finance version with a more liberal proposal from the health committee — with unpredictable results.
......

A major question mark for Reid's negotiations is whether he will include some version of a so-called public plan in the merged bill. Across the Capitol, House Democratic leaders are working to finalize their bill, which does contain a public plan, and floor action is expected in both chambers in coming weeks. If passed, the legislation would then go to a conference committee to reconcile differences.

More fights, more propoganda, more lies and more bs seems to be in the future.

Agreed Tazzy...I clicked on ok before I had finished, then couldnt be bothered to edit it, lol

Id like to see all lobbyists for insurance, pharma, and other assorted financial whores to be unable to persuade/bully/cajole/ bribe/etc etc. any member of congress, the senate or ANYONE...but along with single payer option, and/or public option  it aint gonna happen.
Human lives be damned, its all about the money.

I'd frankly prefer to see them taken out and shot, to be honest. But I suppose that being the warmhearted soul that I am, Id be willing to settle for having their tongues torn out with redhot pincers.

Well quite honestly, my dear Panda Id like to see all their genitals turn square, fester and drop off  leaving gaping pus filled wounds...but I'm not in a vicious mood today *smiling sweetly*

Well, we'll see. It's entirely possible that the most partisan warfare is already behind us, now that the "health care" industry and their republican lapdogs have basically won the battle - I mean, the insurance and pharm companies wrote the bill, for all practical purposes.

mnottertail -> RE: Senate committee approves health care plan (10/13/2009 12:56:44 PM)

well they got 1 republican to sign on, so thats one less republican we will have come next election, so it isnt all bad news, or maybe she will turn democrat.

Absolutely the battles have just begun on this one, and that scares me.  Once the final "negotiated" version makes it to the floor, before conference, and in conference, this thing is going to be a nuclear issue for some that are in tight reelection fights.  Also, if there is even an attempt to make it look as if there has been compromise to make it a bipartisan bill, it may help sway the critics or at least some public opinion.  If the bill is railroaded through (and they do have the votes to do so), and they do it with another hired speedreader, I would suggest it is probably the last "accomplishment" that this Congress in its current makeup will be making.

The real question to me is whether or not the bluedogs will go along with final bill passage if it includes all of the bells and whistles that Pelosi and Reid want included.

Sorry for rambling, but this topic hits close to home on a few fronts.

I wish you well,
Thadius

Tal Thad, good to see you again.

The Dems may not have the votes, there is a liberal wing and conservative wing of democrats out there it ain't 256 democrats of one mind, marching in lockstep.

Ron

What we will have is the Insurance companies and pharm companies against the rest of the health care industry.... and both political parties just hoping to dodge the bullets till after the next election... how lovely.

Thadius -> RE: Senate committee approves health care plan (10/13/2009 1:11:41 PM)

Tal Ron,

Great to see you old friend.  I think that is part of the reason you are seeing such extremes on the various committee markups,  it gives cover for the Bluedogs to vote against the final bill.  They can always use the I voted for reform, but the watered down version or the extreme changes (depending on if they are in a more conservative district or not) made the final bill not supportable.  I tried to bring about the reform we need in my committee, but our committee was overpowered by (insert scapegoat).

Something needs to be done on this issue, but unfortunately I don't think it is going to occur with all of the cock-fighting in Congress.

I wish you well,
Thadius

Maybe they'll just shoot her.

Sanity -> RE: Senate committee approves health care plan (10/13/2009 1:47:40 PM)

That's an... um, interesting take, considering that the Republicans voted against it, all except for Olympia Snow.

The vote was guarenteed, Sanity. Even if Snow had voted against it, it would have passed. Regardless of how any Republican feels on this issue, they will vote "no". Elections are coming up after all. They better hope the turn out isnt the same as the last election.

Sanity -> RE: Senate committee approves health care plan (10/13/2009 1:56:37 PM)

If this bill is signed into law you'll get your coverage tazzy. That or you'll pay the IRS a hefty fine! [:'(]

Sanity -> RE: Senate committee approves health care plan (10/13/2009 2:04:35 PM)

It doesn't matter how you try to spin it, for Panda to try to pin this bill on Republicans when Dems wrote the bill and voted for the bill in committee and Republicans voted against it.

There's some weird, desperate mental gymnastics at work there, on that one!

LOL.. Honey.. who are you fooling? No one is spinning anything. YOu have your head shoved so far up your ass, you cant even see the light of day.

What just passed the committee is a watered down version.. extremely watered. Now the two proposals have to go to battle. It will be incredible to watch the squealing of the insurance companies and lobbiests... yeah... they all LOVE republicans right now...when the two versions come out as one.

I posted a list of the Insurance companies demands, and just who proposed each one. As usual, you didnt bother to look, else you wouldnt be slinging the bs you are right now.

Go look for it, or keep your head buried. The fall out from all of this will be felt next year. I hope your ready.

ThatDamnedPanda -> RE: Senate committee approves health care plan (10/13/2009 2:13:58 PM)

The Republicans will continue to fight tooth and nail to keep the pressure on until the end. They've got the liberal democrats backed into a corner, and they know it. They want the final bill to be as weak as possible, and there is no incentive whatsoever at this point for them to vote in favor of it. This isn't a little league game - they're going to run up the score as high as possible.

Without some kind of public option, that part will have a hell of a time passing. Not to mention it will cost, according to the fine upstanding men and women housed within the insurance industry, you more money than me.
