cjan -> RE: Let's learn polite phrases in other languages,,, (10/14/2009 10:59:25 AM)

Here's a greeting in Spanish that is sure to make new friends.

" Mamame la pinga, puta ! "

DemonKia -> RE: Let's learn polite phrases in other languages,,, (10/14/2009 11:10:12 AM)

Well, 'puta' is a bad word, means whore or something along those lines . ... .

Greedy, I try to learn 'please' & 'thank you' in whatever language, those are probably two of the most useful words to learn.

Spanish:

Please = por favor

Thank you = gracias

Hello = ola

Good = buena, bueno, buenos

Good day = buenos dias

Good afternoon = buenos tardes

Good evening = buenos noches

...

I could go on, I've been working at increasing my Spanish for a while now, since it's immediately useful .. .. Tho' I'm not sure how useful others will find the ability to ask in Spanish for extra onions & cilantro, lol . . . . .

Oh, & I vote yes for naughty words in foreign languages . . . . Merde, I've been collecting those for a long time . . . .

Well cjan... here's the thing... If I am understanding you correctly... Mamame ... well honey...
Mamar is "to suck"
"me" means you do it to yourself.
"La pinga" is "the penis"
and puta - yes kia, puta means "whore".

SO now what exactly are you doing to yourself there darling?

*I've always been told  ummm *blush*  "chupa mi pinga" or "quiero romper tu cullito"... neither of which I minded following through with of course... but ... hmmmm.

Can you send some pix of what you're doing?

Thanks,
sunshine chodachrome

Confessions of a would be poly-linguist, #2:

I took a year of Russian in college. I retain almost none of it, & what we learned in the way of 'hello' is a polysyllabic excess I'm skipping for the nonce. I do retain the curious ability to write cursive Cyrillic -- yes, there's a party trick to make one popular with the in-kids, lol . .. ..

The other bit that stuck with me is the Russian word for 'bitch' -- one of my fave words in any language. The Cyrillic script looks like 'cyka', but it's pronounced 'sue-kah' -- yeah, like some kinda porn-star name . . . . .

After Russian-English dictionary consult (cuz, yeah, 'bitch' & cursive Cyrillic, that's all that stuck), I'll spare ya the Cyrillic:

Thank you = spaw-see-buh

I'll leave it at that . . . .

Some Swahili, because French and Irish have been done, German isn't cool and Welsh is super useless.

Shikamoo Bwana/Mama - Hello Sir/lady (only appropriate for your elders and betters, Jambo/Mambo for peers)
Ndiyo Bwana, Hapana Bwana - Yes Sir, No Sir
Habari ya mchana - How's your afternoon?
Asante sana - Thank you very much

oh and... Hakuna matata rafiki!

Hebrew:
Shalom aleichem (literally peace be with you). Can be used for hello or goodbye.
Todah - Thanks.
Bevakasha - Please and you're welcome.

Arabic: Salaam aleikham.  Same as Shalom aleichem but unfortunately different dialects use it for hello, for goodbye, or both.
Shokreh - Thank you.

Navajo: Ya-ta-hey - Hello.
Ha-go-o-nah - goodbye.

peachgirl -> RE: Let's learn polite phrases in other languages,,, (10/14/2009 7:17:57 PM)

Barev, inch peses?
(Hello, how are you? in Armenian)
Shat lav, merci.
(very well, thank you)
most of the Armenians I know use "merci" for thank you.  I dunno why.

And, not so polite for the Spanish:
Culo cagao!  (not sure of the spelling)
dirty crotch!

DesFIP -> RE: Let's learn polite phrases in other languages,,, (10/14/2009 7:26:00 PM)

My mother had a list of phrases she always learned first. Please, thank you, where's the bathroom, ice water, ashtray. She figured she could get by quite well with just these.

I used to know them all in Croatian, we spent a lot of time in Zagreb. Alas with the years, and disuse, it's all gone.

ShaharThorne -> RE: Let's learn polite phrases in other languages,,, (10/14/2009 7:36:33 PM)

I used to speak fluent Korean but with no one to practice with, I lost it.
