I'm not sure she was incorrect in saying that Welsh is useless. Are there any places where people only speak Welsh and don't speak English? Because although knowing a dead language is a worthwhile thing, it isn't essential if all you are talking about is asking someone for directions. I know people who study Yiddish but there are no longer any sole Yiddish speakers.

Actually, I believe that in Welsh schools, the kids are required to learn Welsh. And there is apparently a push in the legislature to make it mandatory to require all businesses to offer bilingual services.
