Oh. My. God.

It's started already! The bats have returned. Last summer, I had a total of 10 bats in the house. We had an inspector check things out, and there is no colony living in our house, but the bats keep getting in. The inspector told me the colony was probably in the church next door and the babies were getting confused and coming here instead.

But it's March! And I've already had 2 in the house, and I heard another one tonight! I'm thinking I should start tagging the darned things, just to see if what I've got is a repeat offender!

We're going to be painting this Spring, and I'm hoping that filling whatever cracks we find as we go will solve the problem. But then, I thought putting the new roof on last winter would solve it, too, but instead it got worse! We went from 3 all summer to 10!

Ideas, anyone?

Advice?... Sorry.. my kids love to see the bats coming out at sunset.. tossing socks up at them to see their reactions.

But I do wish you the best of luck... don't want them in my house either.. and NC is gets their fair share of them as well.

Nooooo! I can't exterminate! They're CUTE!!! I just don't want them flying around inside my house because I was told by the inspector last year, of 2000 animals tested for rabies last year, 15 of them were carriers - but ALL 15 were bats!! The dogs are up to date on their shots, but the cats, because they live inside, haven't seen a vet in years (my vet told me immunization wasn't really necessary unless they were outside), and you can't immunize birds for rabies. That, and I'd rather not get bit myself when trying to catch the darned things.

I've learned they're fairly easy to catch, because it appears they startle easily and tend to flap to the floor, where I just throw a towel over them and take them outside, but sheesh! Stupid bats!

Ahhh then they are not the evil MiL and her brood from hell. I agree with your catch and release lass.. However, if they squeek with an Australian Accent beware they are 5th columinists and are for-runners of the Bats out of hell...........

I'm thinking your ex-mother-in-law must be of some relation to my ex-mother-in-law.

Just be careful Evanesce that there are babies around that get trapped inside when you fill the holes.

Denise,

Bats are consider to be a reservoir animal here in Michigan. I believe in the last year there were 8 bats who tested positive. None of those were found to have transmitted the disease to people or family pets. The numbers are very small...but I do understand that any risk is still a risk.

On the up side...bats are good to have around. They eat huge quantities of bugs. Some species are known to consume up to 7 times their weight each and every day in mosquitos. Now that is alot of mosquitos. Many people today even put up bat housing in their yards to attract them. This might be an option for you as it will draw them away from your residence...especially if you also take the necessary steps to seek out and seal up all of the other possible points of entry in your home. Make sure that your animals vaccinations are up to date and don't handle any dead (or live) bats unless you are wearing heavy gloves or other protection.

Good luck!

My sister gets bats in her house too. She turns on the lights, inside and out, opens all the windows and doors, and they generally fly out on their own. If you are sure the bat is in one room, make the room as light as you can and the outside too, if possible, close all windows and doors from that room to the rest of the house, leaving that room's exit windows and doors open. < bats are not blind > Bats have very good echolocation < radar> and are frightened inside the home and will generally fly out the window or door within a few minutes. They actally fly around the home, looking for an escape to the outside.

I know my sister has info on building bat houses to get rid of them <coming in the house > more permanantly. I guess if you have a couple of these bat houses, they don't come inside. If you would like me to see if she can send me info, I would be happy to do that.

I have fruit bats in the trees about here.. There is much screeching and fighting over who gets the pawpaws.. (Much like slaves over the food or a Master when they are horney).... If they dump on your car you may need a shovel to clean up.. (JK) and for those unused to them (true story) and you have been watching vampire movies and are walking at night. If a bat takes off near you and all you hear us the Whoosh,,Woosh from their leathery wings you may need a rapid change of underwear.....

I heard one last night, too.

Wretched things, I figured I still had a couple of months before the eternal paranoia of bat season sets in.

One problem with catch and release is that they do get back in. I prefer a more draconian solution, and a burial at sea.

In UK and europe, killing bats is illegal, due to all being registered as 'protected'. In the united states, there are at least 3 (state wide) species that are protected. In australia, there are at least two (I am not sure the specific number). So being aware of what laws exist is vital.

Poisons used will effect other animals as well.

So a little inconvient to you, they maybe, but they are a vital part of the eco system and after all, humans invaded their homes first... so just exactly who really needs the sea burial?

Peace and Love

Hmmm... have to keep an ear out for those Aussie bats, then. I'm not sure what a 5th columnist is, but it sounds ominous.

That would be great, and very much appreciated. We've talked about having bat houses, because we DO like bats and find them VERY beneficial to have around. However, we live in a 104-yr-old house next door to a 100-yr-old church, and the bats are likely living in the bell tower, among other places.

I do try to get them outside as quickly as possible, and if I get them into my computer room, I can just open the door to the balcony and they'll fly out. Anywhere else in the house, though, and I usually have to catch them. Good thing they're sturdy little critters.
