South Carolina acknowledges that it executed 2 innocent men. A little late for them and their immediate families, of course, but that's the price of justice in a free society. Ain't it?

quote:

Nearly 100 years had passed since his great-uncles, Thomas Griffin and Meeks Griffin, were wrongfully executed in South Carolina. On Wednesday, a board voted 7-0 to pardon both men, clearing their names in the 1913 killing of a veteran of the Confederate Army. It marks the first time in history that South Carolina has issued a posthumous pardon in a capital murder case.

No Sanity whats terribly sad and unfortunate is that our society insists on demanding the ultimate price be paid.....prior to ensuring guilt.
Not a great big fan of capitol punishment......but certainly it should never be used where guilt hasn't been established waaaay beyond a reasonable doubt.troublesome concept that may be but.....

I knew it was just a matter of time before someone argued that executing innocent people is perfectly acceptable, but I have to admit I thought it would take a little longer than that.

That's what I'm arguing?

Do you ever debate WITHOUT putting words in other people's mouths Panda?

Hey, don't blame us if none of us can ever figure out the logical point of whatever it is you're trying to say. God knows, we do our best.

Texas executed an innocent man five years ago. Will it take them close to one century to acknowledge that they made a mistake? Cameron Willingham .

Abolish the death penalty: it's the right thing to do.

Well, keep it as an option, just for me? I think I would rather be executed -- preferrably standing up in the light of day by a firing squad -- even wrongly, than condemned to spend the rest of my life in some hell-hole.

This is actually one of the best argument for abolishing the death penalty....that and the fact that it is cheaper to imprison a man for life than it is to actually get him in the chamber(okay not the best argument ,but the most pragmatic)

Hey I am a big advocate of revenege, but not by the state. I am also a big advocate that the family of victims be allowed to either take the revenege or forgive the offender. That being said, the problem with the death penalty is that there are too many chances that the wrong person is sent to death, but I also support improving the system because a mistake of taking 20 years away from someone is just as severe, at least to me personally. Put me on the wall with Kirata, rather than lock me away.

I've no idea what it must be like to be walked to my pre-planned murder at the hands of the representatives of the state, but I can't imagine it feels too good. In fact,, just projecting myself in the shoes of the innocent about to be killed makes my head spin.

If I were innocent, and wrongfully convicted, I think I'd rather have the opportunity to fight to clear my name in prison rather than to be "lawfully" assassinated.

These speculations are beside the point anyway: it's not about what people would hypothetically prefer for themselves, really, is it?

No, it's not....

It's about how much our society (not the prisoner) values freedom and dignity.

Nevertheless, no matter how bad it would be, it would be soon over. Locking a man up in a hell-hole for the rest of his life is a cruelty that goes on and on and on....

Me too, if I thought I could. But if I could not, to be condemned to a life of endless hopelessness would be worse than death.

See, I'm viscerally opposed to the idea of executing the innocent, even if they ask for it. Call me a frikkin sadist if you must :-) .
