The people with the best memories ever studied are usually those who have some form of synesthesia, meaning they can hear colors, or otherwise mix together different senses.  This is often a problem, and is part of the reason some "idiot savants" have superb memories even though they are low-functioning in other ways.

Could you expand on "hearing colors" a little bit RedMagic?

It makes sense if you think about it.  People have much better memory for things like smell, and visuals like a steak dinner, than they do for letters and numbers.  If you can figure out a way to encode "1011100111" as "flat iron steak with red potatoes and gravy," then you'll be able to spit back that string of 0's and 1's, even though you're "really" remembering the food.

That's very similar to some of the working memory training I've been doing! I didn't do as well on the visual parts as I did on the "audio-only" parts.

I took an IQ test just before I started the working memory training program so I would have a sort of baseline, because my plan is to take the IQ test again in 6 months to see if the working memory portion of the test changed in any way.

An eideter is someone with 'perfect recall' . . .. . Some of your more general questions have answers in that Wiki article . . . . .

I'd bet that, at it's extreme, an eideter with perfect recall is a fictional construct much more than a reality embodied in actual people. I suspect it's much more the case that individuals have partial eidetic memory, or they are eideters in specific ways or for particular kinds of information, that sorta thing . . . ..

For instance, I'm an eideter when it comes to spelling, for about 80% of the words in the English language . . . . I picture them just like they were in the dictionary . .. . . .

Me too! I actually never made that connection until this very moment!

I never knew that.  I have synaesthesia and my memory sucks... I must have been in the wrong queue when they handed that out.

I know I am not RM but if I may?
It's as though a couple of senses are joined.  I have always been like this and I really did not think that it's not how everyone is.  There are some people who do 'all of the above' but many have very specific joining.
For me, words have a specific taste and colour.  And also the written word has a colour.  So the alphabet looks a bit like typing in rainbow colour.  But specific words or names have a taste all of their own.  Your name for example, looks red and tastes like raspberries to me.  Redmagic - even though he has the red in his name - looks a deep blue and tastes like liquorice.  And sounds evoke an image - grunts and yawns all have specific objects light up in my mind and if I close my eyes in a busy street, I can see all sorts of things tht are not really there.

Hope that makes sense.

OP:

I see people's words and animals's barking etc in colors..
I hear sounds each mountain makes..a tone..and remember the next time I pass through.
It was evident early I had  some sort of structurally different memory.
I remembered smells of people..thier homes etc.

My father worked a lot with me before school age..so I as reading newspapers by 5..he used the memory strength for that by introducing the letters and sounds with the letters..
and using ALL MODALITY strengths..( visual..auditory and kinestetic)

He had me read the entire set of encyclopedias by 10 and showed me how to scan or speed read..leaving out the  thes  ands etc..and gabbing  key words with my eyes..he woudl say "go to L..page 75..what is there?"...etc

RE: ADHD and memory..
As a teacher is used dif methods for dif children.
There was one who remembered pertinent data if it was taped.
Another needed to "tell" the answers to tests not write them
IT is very often ABOUT modality of learning.
TRY to find if you are auditory..visual..or kinestetic..it is my guess you are NOT an auditory learner..
If it is at home and everyday things..you could employ a post it system or notebook...
thus writing and seeing.
If it is work related such as you are given new data to process..and you know your learning style.you can then adapt the info to your style...eg) a lecture is given..but you ask for a tape of it or video.

also..I USED essential oil aroma therapy with adults and kids with ADD and ADHD..I used ROSEMARY OIL(PURE)...It is mentiond in ancient literature as a
memory and brain enhancer.I often infused it the classroom as well  as orange oil for dispelling anger.

I would like to say also that many ppl are MISDIAGNOSED and labelled needlessy
and I became very pissed off with the school system for this.
What if a child was told..rather than "you have add or adhd.."
"YOU are a divergent thinker...you get many many ideas..lets see how we can
organize those that are important
"YOUR ideas come quickly and go quickly..lets see which ones you want to keep "
here I'll show you..
"YOU are a convergent thinker..wow..you focus on one thing..but then sometimes other things get left out..lets see what we can do for you to keep important thoughts with you."

MANY kids were labelled when in fact THEY WERE BORED
You can only doing boring shitty worksheets so long.

RE:IQ...
old IQ tests basically tested memory and to me were bullshit.( although they got me a scholarhsip)

The Structure of the INTELLECT( a new "test"(CA)) covers 18+ areas of giftedness etc so that for example there may be a child who cannot remember spellings..but his writing is profound
or
there may be someone who remembers amazing historical facts but how do they APPLY them>

NOTE:....many high IQ-ers(back in the day) suddenly did shitty by 3rd year university..WHy?
no more memory and facts needed...CREATIVITY and
appilcations needed.

**School marms task of the week:
RE-NAME your way of thinking...

eg) "I'm not insane..I'm mentally divergent"
( BRUCE WIllis in 12 MONkeys..

I just wanted to add on to Gypsy's excellent post about modalities of thinking.

There are different modes of cognition -- visual, kinesthetic, auditory, textual, spatial, & others . . . . . There is overlap between them for most people, I suspect, & they are dynamic, changing over time . . . .

For instance, in my experience, vast swathes of little boys are strongly kinesthetic learners. That is, they learn best when they can incorporate physical movement into the process . .. . .

Or, for another example, I'm auditorially impaired when it comes to processing all kinds of data, especially complicated, technical, etc kinds of stuff -- if I just hear the data, manipulating it & working with it in a purely verbal / heard manner is difficult .. . .. But if I can visually lay out the information, I do just fine.
