Save the planet: eat a dog?
By TANYA KATTERNS - The Dominion Post

The eco-pawprint of a pet dog is twice that of a 4.6-litre Land Cruiser driven 10,000 kilometres a year, researchers have found.

...

The couple have assessed the carbon emissions created bypopular pets, taking into account the ingredients of pet food and the land needed to create them.

"If you have a German shepherd or similar-sized dog, for example, its impact every year is exactly the same as driving a large car around," Brenda Vale said.

"A lot of people worry about having SUVs but they don't worry about having Alsatians and what we are saying is, well, maybe you should be because the environmental impact ... is comparable."

In a study published in New Scientist, they calculated a medium dog eats 164 kilograms of meat and 95kg of cereals every year. It takes 43.3 square metres of land to produce 1kg of chicken a year. This means it takes 0.84 hectares to feed Fido.

They compared this with the footprint of a Toyota Land Cruiser, driven 10,000km a year, which uses 55.1 gigajoules (the energy used to build and fuel it). One hectare of land can produce 135 gigajoules a year, which means the vehicle's eco-footprint is 0.41ha – less than half of the dog's.

Interesting read.

So this is what we are reduced to, OK.

I'll keep the 4WD and eat dogs. What kind of sauce do you recommend ?

Believe me I am totally rational. The 4WD can get me to work in deep snow. To feed the dog. If the dog feeds me I save on food and can put gas in the tank.

Mr. Spock would be proud.

screw that.  make SOYLENT GREEN A REALITY.

waste of good MEAT.

You come from Kentucky, you've seen 2000 Maniacs, you know what good BBQ these damn carpetbaggers and yankee tourist make for!

I don't like dogs. Now I know why.

Arrogance -> RE: Eat a Dog: Save the Planet. (10/22/2009 10:29:11 PM)

I'd rather save a dog and eat a soccer-mom.

slvemike4u -> RE: Eat a Dog: Save the Planet. (10/22/2009 10:32:04 PM)

Well hell Arrogance...I'm down for eating a soccer mom too......dogs having nothing to do with it!

TheHeretic -> RE: Eat a Dog: Save the Planet. (10/22/2009 10:42:53 PM)

Uh-oh.  I'd better get busy trying to deal with the carbon footprint.  Does it matter if the dog pees on the trees I plant to offset him?

Does Al Gore have a special kennel I can buy from, where they already plant the trees (for a nominal fee)?

HatesParisHilton -> RE: Eat a Dog: Save the Planet. (10/22/2009 11:03:24 PM)

"I'd better get busy trying to deal with the carbon footprint."

like the imprint of EATING a at, tasty dumb-ass redneck is LESS than what it takes JUST FOR THE PETROL of carting his fat-ass kin around to the memorial, then the burial?  with all the food feeding THEM when ead Fat Ass could be food instead?

PLUS the carbon imprint for the glossy finish of his coffin ALONE?

plus the suit he's being buried in?

PLUS the lights used to see his pock-marked fat azzzz clearly enoug to gie him a corpse make-over for his last "one night only" appearance in the casket?

PLUS the carbon used to lower his bacon-luvvin azz INTO the cround?

dude, wanna cut carbon imprints?

EAT THE FAT FUCKER.

NeedToUseYou -> RE: Eat a Dog: Save the Planet. (10/23/2009 3:10:24 AM)

Funny, but probably flawed.

My dogs eat stuff I'd throw away otherwise, so it's not entirely accurate, in my case, they do eat dog food as well. However, a Dog also acts as a security system, at least mine do, if I'm not around, and you come in they will scare the crap out of you, I don't know if they would bite, because the few times it happened the person immediately closes the door. They also function as foot warmers.

BKSir -> RE: Eat a Dog: Save the Planet. (10/23/2009 3:16:06 AM)

Yeah, I was about to ask, what is the average carbon footprint for the typical owner of an SUV or large breed dog?  Let's start eating them instead.  I'm golden, I have cats and an old sedan that gets better mileage than half the "efficient" new vehicles.

HatesParisHilton -> RE: Eat a Dog: Save the Planet. (10/23/2009 3:42:37 AM)

High end coffins.  seriously.  there's about 3 separate industries that go into making ONE coffin.

and people are BURYING their dogs in coffins!

waste of meat, the dog AND the asshole who lets the damn dog poop in my yard and on my beach (where the "no dogs" sign is as big as life).

I also say we go Merchant of Venice on these dog luvvin' 'nards.  I get to carve out their flesh, same weight as that of the poop they leave anywhere but THEIR OWN YARD and assigned places.

then we can make burger patties outta that meat.

BKSir -> RE: Eat a Dog: Save the Planet. (10/23/2009 3:46:24 AM)

Ooooh, yard poopers!  I hate them so much!  I know I'm not the only one tempted to follow them home and leave my own big ol steaming pile on their lawn.  Think they'd get the hint?

HatesParisHilton -> RE: Eat a Dog: Save the Planet. (10/23/2009 4:11:52 AM)

man, that is SO tempting!

after chili or CURRY, YEAH!

WarKirby -> RE: Eat a Dog: Save the Planet. (10/23/2009 5:58:26 AM)

164 kg of meat every year? my dog certainly doesn't eat that.

HatesParisHilton -> RE: Eat a Dog: Save the Planet. (10/23/2009 6:04:02 AM)

From your pic, your dog appears to eat your neighbor.

after jumping through the window of course.

Me, I don't care as long as if he poops, you clean it up or give the poop-weight in your own FLESH.

Oh dear, I currently have two dogs, one cat and two horses. Not to mention two compact (but one is a sports......zoom zoom) cars, and a 4 wheel drive truck. Imagine how horrible I am!!

However, every time I try to count the number of trees in my yard I tend to lose count.."did I already count that one or no?" and plant on average, one new one a year. Am I offsetting anything?

I live as frugally and heathily as possible. My dogs are better company than 90% of the people I know. I vote we start knocking off some of the inbred rednecks (thosoe that drive everywhere in their 4 wheel drives, hold mud runs, think a weekend of fun involves camping around a blazing campfire and playing in the river bottom with their ATVs) and feed them to the local coyotes and pig farms.

Sanity -> RE: Eat a Dog: Save the Planet. (10/23/2009 6:40:40 AM)

How dare we even breathe. Our very breath is poisonous to this planet, according to our government.

All hail the planet god and the Reverend Al Gore.
