I consider myself in a perfect situation. I live in a beautiful place, surrounded by country, low cost of living, peaceful life, able to ply my trade reasonably--and yet half a day's drive from New York, Boston, Philadelphia, and other major cities when I need to access them.

Not to mention just an hour or few from wherever in the Adirondacks!

If this thread had been any more blatantly hijacked, it would be landing in Cuba right about now.

Ok - on topic here. I have no problem with rich people using their own money to finance their own campaign. At least they are only beholden to themselves afterward instead of some third party donor. They're not actually buying the position outright - they still have to con enough people into voting for them.

I also have no problem with hijacked planes going to Cuba. I missed not seeing the WTC in the skyline when I visited the Big Apple.

I do love visiting NY, for short stints (the shorter the better really, it's so damned expensive), and plan on visiting again.  But you couldn't pay me enough to live there.  No, literally, no one can pay anyone enough to live there!  A friend of mine recently sold his place there for, if I recall, $750k, for like 700 sq. ft.  We have more than 700 sq ft. of BEDROOM space in the house, not counting the office which could be converted quickly into another one!  That's insane!

Don't get me wrong, it's one hell of a fun city, and the people are awesome (no, really, it's true.  The "jerks" that everyone thinks are from NYC are actually the holland tunnel crew from jersey, actual New Yorkers kick ass).

My big question is, why would anyone willingly spend that much money to become mayor of ANYWHERE?  The man is obviously a total idiot!  Spending that much to be mayor of NY, when the salary is only $200k/year.  If he seriously has such an overwhelming compulsion to just waste money, he could send some my way... please?  Shit, $85 MIL!  He could literally buy California for that right now I think.  But then I'd just think he's even more stupid than I already do.  Sorry, but anyone who takes that much of a loss to become a mayor... or anything for that matter...  needs to be locked up in an asylum.  And there's no way I would ever trust him to work on any kind of budget either!

(PS:  This is all in humour... mostly.  I'm well aware of his other business and philanthropic ventures, and he's actually quite admirable for the most part.  I still think he's bat shit insane for spending 85 mil to become mayor of NYC though.)

Spending $85mil is a waste of money that could have been better spent to aid the less fortunate.  You know them.  They're the rest of MLB teams who simply cannot afford to buy a pennant.

However, as a mini hijack I do love a good Cuban cigar, so if anyone on board this hijacked thread has any, I'd love to buy a box.  Just send the bill to Bloomberg.

NY.

It's not anywhere and It's all relative.  $85m is less than 1% of his fortune.   I've been told he does it for the pussy.

Built a $17B personal fortune from scratch?...I'd say his pretty good with numbers.   He doesn't even accept the $200k salary.
The reason it's appealing to have a rich guy in office, especially around here, is he's less likely to be bought.

Actually they're the Staten Island Ferry folks.

Bloomberg always runs as a Republican but in my eyes is a limosine democrat. Shortly after signing a no smoking ordinance in New York, there were photos of him smoking a cigar at a private fund raising event. 'Do as I say, not as I do'.....I don't like him..
