Fruit juice is very high in carbs... also not good for diabetics and since they don't have the fiber of fruit, the sugar goes into your system quickly.

If you are going to do that, I would suggest using the light (reduced sugar) fruit juices.

I did read that and I did not mean to imply you did not know what you are doing. I am sorry if it came across that way.

My point was more to clarify in general.
The problem is that very diluted fruit juice is great if you are a sipper.
If you are a guzzler, then it won't matter that you are diluting it.

Most fruit juices have at least 30 grams of sugar in 8 ounces.
If you mix it 3-1 (water/juice) and make a total of a quart and have 4 ounces every now and then then you aren't getting so much sugar.
If you drink the whole quart in an hour then you have still consumed 30 grams of sugar.

The OP and others might not realise that.

Whats wrong with putting cooked meals in the fridge, if they're left overs?

Yup we're making a list to get at the grocery store an then I am going to make up the meals for a week.


I don't drink milk but that's a good tip:)

Food Pyramid when they have the meat 5 for 25.00, I just bought 25.00 worth of meat from Food Pyramid, split it down the middle with my daughter and we both have meat for a multitude of meals.

Check the 1.00 isles at your local grocers, check the clearance isles. It can be done. You have to be creative in your food prep.

Go to FoodNetwork.com get recipes from Mellisa D'Arabian and Sandra Lee.

Take half a gallon of whole milk and make half a gallon of powdered milk and mix them together, it will stretch your milk greatly and you still get your calcium and vitamin D.

Buy Store brands. Even Walmart has gone to plain wrap rather than the fancy packaging to keep costs down.

Get together with some friends purchase bulk products and split them.

Any time I am at the store it seems like most pay with food stamps.   Maybe it is the time or day that I go.

Don't put them in the fridge, put them in the freezer, they will keep longer. Most times we put cooked leftovers in the fridge thinking we will go back to them soon and all they do is sit and go bad. Putting them in the freezer gives them more longevity.

I see BBTBW that's true my mom does that she says don't eat that I am saving it for another meal, I don't eat it and it just rots.

I know you said you don't drink milk. But if you are not allergic, Milk is a good easily accessible source of protein if you are pre-diabetic or diabetic. Put some sugar free drink mix in it to flavor it. I have found that Great Value sugar free drink mix is pretty good in milk if you need some flavoring.

We just cut up a whole chicken w/ those shears you get w/ a knife set, worked real good as those shears are REALLY sharp!

I bought one from those companies selling them on tv,  It's called Sonic blade and it sucked the blade came out so easily it wobbled and then the batteries wouldn't even work lol. I bought it for my family for christmas for like 75 bucks because it impressed me a whole lot on the infomercial.

Actually I bought mine at our local grocery store for five dollars, several years ago, and it works great!  There are locks for the blades and a safety button for the trigger.  I wanted it for cutting homemade bread, but it works like a treat on so many things!

Before you get caught up in the hype and spend $75 for something else you see on tv, you might want to bookmark this site to read reviews the next time (or google "as seen on tv" and "reviews"):  http://www.as-seen-on-tv-reviews.net/ 

I think I got my electric knife at Walmart about 10 years ago; I'm sure it was well under $20.

I only read the first two pages, so I am not sureif any one suggested you look into food pantries. The Salvation Army, United Methodist Churches and many other denominations have a " working mans" pantry. They have canned and dry goods and non perishables. Stuff that will help you strech your budget. The food is donated, so the inventory varies. It's a great resource for folks who are trying to make ends meet and just need the extra food allowance to help them thru. Food pantries are one of my charities and I donate $ 30 worth of food a week and work once a month at the pantry.

Call your Regional Salvation Army and or Council of Churches and they can give you info for your area. The people who come to our food pantry are much like yourself. They need the staples and food stretchers to suppliment what they can afford. We also get a list of people in need for the holidays and make up baskets of food for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Check with these two groups in your area and your City Hall to see if you can go on a list for that.

yea cali, I learned that the hard way, after buying the knife and it wasjunk, now I never buy stuff off informercials because when I have in the past it was junk too.

I am sort of lactose intollerant, Milk makes me really plegmy and mucousy and I hate the taste of it but I drink soy milk, and if milk is in something like hot coco I can drink it.

Just thought of a couple of other things. Ground beef  and stew meat can be expensive. When one of the grocers has pot roasts on sale, the price is generally cheaper per lb than gr. beef or stew meat. < we often get bottom round roasts on sale for $1.99/lb> I get either one decent size roast or two small ones. I ring the butcher bell and have them grind half into hamburger and half into stew meat.

Turkey Ham at the deli is usually fairly inexpensive. Ask them to cut it on the thick side, like a hamsteak. Much cheaper than a real hamsteak and many uses. Dice it up and add to pasta salad for a nice lunch, dice up cukes and a tomato and toss that in too or cut it up small and add to rice and beans or scalloped/AuGratin potatoes for a casserole. Add veggies like peas, navy beans, mushrooms and diced tomatoes before cooking if you like. You can also take the " turkey ham steak" and put it in a shallow dish, rub a little brown sugar on it, just cover the bottom with ginger ale, add pinapple if you like, cover with tin foil and bake at 350 about 30 minutes.

Go as close to  vegetarian as is possible for you guys. When I cut meat out of my diet the amount of money I spent on food went waay down. There are plenty of other great, cheap protein sources. It can be hard for carnivorous types to make the transition, but when the budget is that tight you sometimes have to sacrifice your tastebuds for your wallet -- only buy meat that is crazily on sale.

AWESOME post!

I travel too much, so I often eat at a hotel or restaurant....but I love this!

I've never been in a financial position to worry about this kind of thing, but I always shop at WalMart anyway....just because....(kind of dumb to spend 20 bucks for anything you can spend 12 for....ya know?).

Love to hear ideas on how to spend less (more available for my expanding collection of tie dyed shirts and bowling shoes I always figure).
