Gee BK...you say the sweetest things! Yea we get the hyphenated (insert nationality) Canadian here also. It does get a mite annoying. So quite often I'll refer to myself as a poor white assed mix breed canuck! Gotta love the disproving looks I get from some people hahahahaha

I do have to admit that, in some ways, I like the "hyphenated americans" and "hyphenated canadians" (especially the french-canadians and scottish-canadians). It makes it easier to figure out why to laugh at them. ;) Oh, come on, those scottish-canadians from the maritime regions are some goofy and odd and wonderful people, so don't even give me that. I do remember though, standing in line at a grocery store with a friend of mine, a total mutt mix of breeding, coming up with the most improper slang terms for her heritage. What? She's started it by calling me "Jewey McMurray". And I'm damn proud of it. ;) And, if you're reading this, you know who you are you butt lovin, limey, towelheaded, jap wop frog. Of course I never call her that in person, because it's too long to say every time. God, we were laughing so hard by the time we got to the cashier it was difficult to even pay. Sometimes it's fun and even GOOD to say 'screw it' and just whip it out and piss right on the face of political correctness.

Actually, any American who's roots are from the continent of Africa could be considered African-American. This includes South Africans, Egyptians, and whites born anywhere on that continent. The label African-American is pretentious at best and condescending at worst. But hey, it tends to make all us white folk feel pretty comfortable. And it's politically correct[:D] I've never seen anything wrong with just using "Black"

I tend to use "darker skinned gentleman/lady", but commonly only when they're in a group of people and I'm trying to ask a question about them, and it's easier than asking "That one right there. No, the other one. Yeah, wait, no... THAT one there." Just helps to narrow down who I'm asking/talking about. Just like I also tend to point out other traits on people such as, "The one with the funky beard.", or "The one with the big ears", or "The dude with the glasses and long hair." It just helps to identify without all the rigamaroll. Normally, I don't really tend to see race/ethnicity. Just not something important to me. Except for Asians. But that's because I have a particular penchant for those hot Japanese or Vietnamese boys. [;)]

If it is CMs policy- I tend to think they look at the whole context of a post. Especially if you consider how prevalent acronyms are. Speaking of Scotland the next g20 meeting is there Nov 7,8. I bet they are as thrilled as I was...over Pitt. lol

I am from St. Louis...here black and African American are both accepted terms. One is just more formal than the other but can be interchanged. If there is a taboo I have not heard of it here anyway. I figure if I know how someone wants to be addressed I address him or her that way. What damn difference does it make to me? Why should anyone be upset about being polite? Butch

Black certainly isn't taboo in the states. I always refer to myself as black and not African American. In fact outside of websites that often times use the term African American nobody in my family or that I've ever met refers to themselves as African American just black.I guess it's just that a lot of these websites have an American-centric view of things. Black should just be similar in usage to the term Asian which often times encompasses Japanese, Chinese, Koreans, and etc that way a black Canadian, Britain, Australian, or etc. can use it.
