But I said the opposite of that, so it seems that he's running about in the middle here, which can't be all bad..........

OK.

When you're having racially-charged sex, "African-American" is not the appropriate word.

In such a case, use "Black".

Is that better?

That still doesn't make African-American "silly."

It just makes it more appropriate in some contexts than in others.

I wasn't asking your permission on what word to you use or even seeking your approval. The reality is the only people who make the decision on what word / title / label is approriate are the people invovled in the sitaution. I wont apologize if someone else gets the panties in a bunch.

Well, I'm glad you weren't asking for my permission or seeking my approval, because you wouldn't have gotten either.

What you call your Master and his body parts is, as you say, between the two of you.

I could not care less.

But, when you publically opine about what is or isn't "silly" for Blacks--of which I am one--to call themselves, I AM one of "the people involved" in THAT situation.

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!

Is it possible that black folk are not a homogenous and stereotypeable group? That they are uniquely individual just like everyone else with their own, sometimes conflicting opinions? Their own hopes and dreams and desires and goals and friends and families and get togethers and arguments and opinions and .........

Naaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhh,

Steve Martin

that stereo word, I am unsure of the spelling, so I am waffling here....

Ron,
That is exactly how I took his posts. As if he was the end all to all opinions or facts regarding this subject.

How rude!

Talking about me like I'm not right here in the room...

Try taking HIS posts as those of one of (it seems) the very few Blacks who post on these threads, who was and is very tired of reading a bunch of white people's opinions on what Black people should or shouldn't call themselves.

How's that...???

Causcasion sounds dumb to me also.

Yeah makes me sound like a corpse, would much rather just be called Pantone 11-0606 TC in winter and Pantone 17-1656 TC in summer

well, it does sound less dumb if spelled correctly and pronounced as it is correctly spelled.

Just saying.

Honestly, I have sat back and watched your responses, rather bemused. IMO, you did seem to come off as the end all and be all of black opinion. If you are one of the few blacks/African Americans/Negroes/people of color on here that post you owe the rest of us the courtesy of making it clear that you are stating your opinion, not everyone else's.

I personally believe the old saying, "What you call me is not as important as what I answer to."

As an aside, I honestly am lost as opposed to what point you were trying to make as it seemed as if you were all over the place in your various responses. If your general opinion, is the appropriateness of what you are called, depends on the situation, that's fine. That's all you really had to state.

I have been referred to as "colored" by older ladies from WV and taken no offense as I understood the context in which it was used and the backgrounds of those using it. At various times, I have also been referred to and refer to myself as black, African-American, man of color, etc. I believe the intent is more important than the actual word used.

Now you don't have to be seen as the only one of "us" responding and posting to this thread. Happy now?

actually nubianmuscle,

for a long time he IS the only voice of black men out here......and maybe thats what makes him come off like that....he has 312 posts and I defy you to go look at the posting history of most blacks out here (or number of posts entirely) in regards to 'racial' or 'racist' or 'race relations' or whatever you wanna call it topics.

I am now, and have in times past, bemoaned the fact that more black folk haven't posted on topics outside of the BBC shit and Mistresses forums.........

I understand not every man of colour wants to be seen as the spokesman for his race, the Colin Powell, the Barak Obama the -----fuck it, you get the idea, and that lotta folk are just your everyday workaday world joes and janes, and are frankly sick of the shit altogether. And they don't want to mis-step or be the target for their 'perceived' group.

Glad to see you made it and have announced another black mans opinion on the subject, as I am sure every black man has one........

Good one on ya,
Ron

Why do the black people on here have to choose between selecting "African American" (even if they're not American) or "Other"? Why does CM not want to use the word "Black"? Here in the UK it's ok to use the word but is it taboo in the States?

This is a sad state of affairs, Black people think that by calling themselves "African American" that some how they become better. I saw a black female comedian who said. "Ok So now I am African American, am I going to get that loan that I was turned down for last week, or when the cop stops me, what do I say "Officer I am African American not black, so you shouldn't have stopped me"

There was the case of the Black Harvard professor, Cop who deals with people all day long, and is going by the book and his training, follows the procedures of his department in handling an unknown situation. Next thing he know the professor is screaming that he is being attacked because he is black.

The most racist people in America today are not whites, they are blacks and hispanics

Anyhew....anyone remember wtf the OP was talking about before it all went south?

The purpose of the thread was to ask why CM only had African-American as a choice for Black people, when it is an international site.

While the usual suspects from various races show up to point out the deficits of other races....any chance the OP might get an actual answer from an informed source????

support might be the ticket, if enough people asked, they might see that it should be black.

Hey, I also noticed there is no:

Iron it till you stop ethnicity.

you are unique enough

I think the ethnic box sucks monstrous ass, everywhere I encounter it (which is often). Personally, none of the options suit me - as a woman, I'm a 'minority' in this culture.

While I don't argue against the social construct of race in America, I am also noticing a complete fixation on the ethnic origins of individuals here, whereas on the news or in the popular culture. I can't imagine what it must be like for the many individuals in this country who come from massively varied ethnic backgrounds and who, nonetheless, get categorised according to the colour of their skin because of this cultural obsession with 'race' which is, as any educated person knows, a sociological phenomenon that has zilch ground in genetics.

I say black guy, or black woman, or black kid. I've said that from the time I could speak, the black people I've known never have taken offense, nor said any other term to denote they were unhappy with that terminology. If I see a white guy, woman, or child amongst black people, I say white guy, or whatever.

So, I'll stick to my usage. Why collarme uses African-American, is beyond me, I don't know anyone black or white that actually uses the term, outside of academia, and the media.
