People can't even figure out that most of the time it is the policies of the previous administration that determine boom or bust in the next administration. Look at Ronald Reagan. He was the recipient of a Carter induced recession, but 8 years later, he gave Bill Clinton one of the best economies we have had in decades.

Dangit, I could swear that Bush was elected after Reagan, and that Clinton won by hammering about how bad the economy was four year after Reagan left office with the slogan, "It's the economy, stupid."

So lemme get this straight.  The Clinton era prosperity was due solely to Reagan, and 9/11 was due solely to Clinton?

(Geeeeez.....some people have NO fucking grasp of history).

9/11 was due to Obama, the Clinton era prosperity was entirely due to Nixon.

(Even Stevie Wonder could have seen that).

Now you're catching on.

Regardless of all the off-topic attempts at derailment, the Palin book is doing quite well.

Of course, the only explanation of the anti-Palin crowd has is the lack of intelligence of the people buying the book.

Such a shallow analysis doesn't bode well for any true understanding of a growing ground swell of popular opinion that she seems to have hooked into, and understand.

Ah, well, such is politics, life, and revolution ...

The very fact that Sarah Palin scares the hell out of liberals makes me adore her more and more.... If these morons had their way all books that disagree with their little communist manifesto would be burned.... They just announced a 2.5 million reprinting on top of  800,000 first week sales.... scary isn't it libs?  You havn't seen bad yet, but its coming pinkos....

I've never understood why you characters are so convinced we're scared of her. We hate the babbling, blankeyed,  bubbleheaded bitch, sure - but most of my friends and family are liberals and I don't know a single one who actually worries about her.

More than anything, we find her deeply troubling because of what she represents in this country. Her popularity is an ugly reminder of how many millions of Americans prefer ignorant, simpleminded leaders. Not necessarily scary, but sad and profoundly disturbing.

Which would be what?

In my experience and observation, Palin appeals primarily to angry, ignorant, and irrational people, because she is angry, ignorant, and irrational. Her angry, ignorant, irrational babblings are exactly what these people want to hear, so when she opens up her mouth and starts vomiting forth that angry, ignorant, irrational puke, they think it's nothing short of genius because they so rarely hear anyone saying what they're thinking.

What they don't understand is that the reason they don't hear it from anyone else is that most people on the national political scene are too intelligent and too mentally sound to say shit like that. Her message is - yes, the world really is that simple, and no, you really don't need to be a very deep thinker or read any newspapers in order to understand what's happening in that world. They find that message comforting, because they're used to people telling them the world is complex - which they don't like to hear, because that means they don't have the intellectual tools to understand it. Which makes them feel powerless and frightened. Palin makes them feel safe by assuring them the world really is as simple as they are.

Palin is an ignorant person preaching to an ignorant choir, and the only groundswell she's tapped into is a deeply disturbing trend in conservative America to celebrate ignorance as some sort of noble, homespun virtue. That's the thing that's truly frightening about Palin - not that she is any sort of formidable political leader; but rather, what her popularity tells us about the country we're living  in.

Sarah Palin's new book may serve a purpose beyond keeping the AP busy and relaunching the hilariously petty sniping between Palin and former McCain campaign aides: it can, counterintuitively, help Alaska's wolves. San Francisco's Green Apple books has announced that %100 of the proceeds from sales of Going Rogue will go to the Alaska Wildlife Federation. From the bookstore's blog:

With all due to respect to the Republicans who were as overjoyed as I was (for different reasons, of course) by Sarah Palin's nomination to the McCain ticket last year, Green Apple is donating 100% of the profits from sales of Sarah Palin's Going Rogue: An American Life to the Alaska Wildlife Alliance.

According to the Alaska Wildlife Alliance website, the organization is devoted to "the protection of Alaska's natural wildlife for its intrinsic value as well as for the benefit of present and future generations." That's pretty close to the opposite of promoting aerial hunting by paying hunters for severed wolf paws, a policy Palin enacted as Governor of Alaska.

http://www.alternet.org/blogs/peek/144051/buying_sarah_palin's_book_will_help_save_wolves/

!00% to the wolves. 100% to the families on Ft Hood.

Hard not to see why some are buying her books.

Clinton enjoyed the largest peacetime economic boom in our nation's history. There's nothing to compare it to. At least we ran surpluses, if not a lot of planning for the future. But Bush Jr, encouraged by Cheney ignoring history and saying "Ronald Reagan proved deficits don't matter," and immediately cut taxes and then rapidly increased spending--not only ignoring our structural problems, but exacerbating them.

Hi MM--

Karl Rove was the major pusher of the tax cuts; Bush was leery of the third one, thinking that was going to far.  But Rove told him he had to stick to the message.  So Bush signed up for the third cut.

Well, just as there are a lot of different types of intelligence, there  are a lot of different types of dumb.

It's not simply a question of IQ, it has more to do with a way of thinking.  A lot of Palinistas are quite bright in many ways, and even educated. But one of the things they all seem to have in common is a simplistic way of thinking, a desire to constantly force the square pegs of complex issues into simple little round holes. Regardless of whether they fit.

They call that smart; I call it dumb. To each their own.

There were a lot of bulk buys of her book - Walmart, Newsmax (they're practically giving it away; I saw their ad locally)...

But the comments on this site kind of blew me away.  Especially the one about Obama needed a taste tester, and that unions by books by Democrats.

Surely, despite your mischevious and incorrect assertion, we do not need to label the pro-Palin crowd as lacking intelligence.

Their own stance makes that perfectly clear already.

No, it was unions ordered their members to buy books.

All part of that liberal Democratic conspiracy.

And of course, he said he heard it on Rush's show, so it must be true.

Is the book doing that well, last week at a book signing (you know the one she left early, quit would be a good word) the bookstore sold less than 100.

Perhaps she is doing  the ol
d Dianetics trick used so well by Scientology, where you have your publisher go out and purchase all the books so it stays on the best seller list

HarperCollins announced an initial print run of 1.5 million copies for "Going Rogue," which comes as Palin flirts with the idea of running for the White House in 2012 as champion of the Republican right.

"That certainly isn't on my radar screen right now, but when you consider some of the ordinary-turning-into-extraordinary events that have happened in my life, I am not one to predict what will happen in a few years," she said last week.

She added that she was ready to assume a major role "if the people will have me."

The data collected by Nielsen does not include sales at warehouse stores and retail giants Wal-Mart, Sam's and BJ's, or at libraries.

Folks... that says it all.

Don't be silly.

Her views often defy well-established common knowledge. Her supporters are just happy she's a conservative in the news--some perhaps because they agree about dinosaurs, some because it's their political side of the fence.

Panda,

That's an interesting and convoluted way to say that some people think differently than you do, and because they disagree with you, they are simplistic, even if not "dumb".

Could it be, perhaps, that some people hold a different philosophical view about life, one which disagrees with your philosophical view?  Perhaps they aren't "simplistic", but hold differing values and goals?

Starting from different assumptions, and using their own rules, they end up in places that you (and other who believe as you) do not understand.

Because their beginning, journey and conclusions make no sense in your world view, doesn't necessarily make them invalid, simplistic, or false.

Firm

I agree she has different values, she keeps changing them to whatever crowd she is in front of and whatever ever will keep her in the news.
