My question is why are we short of vaccine when we have known about this for over a year? If the government can't get a handle on a pandemic how are they going to run health care?
This just amazes me...

This is a regular flu. No need to get the whole country vaccinated unless they have diseases or are "weak"or pregnant. You hopefully realize the time it takes to actually develop a vaccine. They also need to make a vaccine for more countries than just America and it's not like you're a small nation.

Influenza viruses are notorious for changing rapidly. So knowing there's a bad one doesn't mean that a vaccine developed a year ago will work against something now. It's guess work as to which strains are likely to persist and should be in the vaccine.

But unless you're under 30 you won't get it, you'll have antibodies from the last time it came through in a weaker form.
Those under 30 only need the shots if they are pregnant or have a chronic medical condition. For the others, a week in bed just like if you get the regular flu is all that is required.

1. The government isn't in charge of producing the vaccine. Private companies are, and it's taking a while for the eggs to yield (remember, that's where the vaccine is grown?);

2. The government has taken preventative measures already - read the press;

3. Why don't you just go all out and blame Obama for the flu? It's a liberal conspiracy to kill all white people

Careful Celeste, that's only partially true. Being older means there are some antibodies but it is still necessary to get the vaccine as they won't necessarily have enough to protect them from the flu completely.

ETA and it's actually people older than that who may have those antibodies. My folks, who are in their 70s have been told they don't necessarily need the vaccine although they could just to be sure.

It's obviously a different system in the 'States: over here pensioners all get flu jabs if they want one.

According to the information they gave us at work, the Swine Flu isn't any worse than any other flu that goes around every winter. This year is the first time it's manifested itself in HUMANS, so no one has any natural immunity to it.

That sounds about right: thousands of people die of the 'flu every year.
I think they're worried about this one in case it turns out to be nastier than the usual variants now that it's jumped the species gap. There's arguments for and against that from the cases they've had of it so far this year.

LAst I read was that more than 1000 have died in the US from H1N1. And since it is different, They are saying we need to be vacinated from both the regular flu virus and the more deadly swine flu virus separately. Here in Washington State, Thurston County, 2 deaths from the Swine Flu have already occured. It is not the same as your everyday flu and so manifests itself differently. Often by the time ou know you have this new virus it is almost too late and something has to be done about it now and not a laxadasically later. Also hte shot for swine flu is more expensive than your standard flu innoculation. ANd the USA so far does not provide insurance for all as does Great Britain and Canada. There are far too many people, including the medical community, who are fighting against it. I for one believe that it would be far better than the current medical practice of bleeding the patient dry from both the medical visit and the medication. Currently I have three meds that carry a $100 co pay. And that is far too high!!!!!!

The system in the UK and Canada isn't insurance for all, though it may well look like that. There's basic cover for everyone (or everyone with an address, at least) but it's possible to buy insurance for a private medical plan on top of that if you don't fancy being treated with the scum.

As the h1n1 batches of vaccine come out- the % of bad stuff in them will increase.

From what I am hearing- people have got sick- including me- but feel it is not worth the risk of a shot.

Now being this is a National Emergency- I must run into town and loot the stores- burn cars and riot. right?

They had queues for three or four hours to get the H1N1 shot today at one of the local convention center, averaging 18 people per hour per jabbber(health care peep)
In toronto I think , they had a drive thru shot clinic as well, but regular clinics in toronto will be opening for about six hours a day starting on monday
I heard all this on the local news tonite

It came through in the 70s or 80s in a milder form. Like cow pox to small pox, if anyone knows that analogy.

But the kid has some virus and there's confirmed cases in his school so I was on the phone with the nurse today. She says even if it was swine flu, it still isn't likely to be any rougher on him than a normal flu. The thing to worry about is if it gets better and then comes back. Because that's when it comes with complications. This being in a person who has no other health risks.

They haven't even started vaccinating people here yet against it. But they'll start with pregnant women and chronically ill younger people first since the odds are worse for them.

I regretfully have to disagree with your statement. You can get swine flu if you are over 30. We had a man, age 40 die of H1N1 just a few days ago. We must be very careful in making such sweeping statements.

I got it two months ago and I am still sick. It kicked my ass! Most of us here that got it, it was mild.... and then... half of us were so weakened that we got other infections, conditions or viruses. Ages were varied from pre-school, teen, young adult and me.

If you have any other illness... I would recommend the spray for sure... the shot I am not so sure about because of something in it. But after the last two months, I would take even the shot.

The problem with that list is that you don't realize how many of the chemicals are in trace amounts until you read the package insert.

K, not everybody caught a mild case of it back then so some people have no antibodies. Absolutely right, but the odds are against it hitting us older folks as hard as it's hitting the younger ones. And even with the ones with no existing antibodies, if you were healthy to begin with, your odds of not having severe complications are much less.

I kept hearing that it wasn't so bad...until my co-worker's 14 y/o niece went into ICU on life support for over a week with it - her lungs collapsed and there was so much pressure on her heart it kept trying to stop. Two weeks out of the hospital, she still has pneumonia and can not walk across a room without nearly collapsing. She may be admitted again. Up until now she has been a perfectly healthy adolescent. It has been an awful situation for her and her family. She is not yet out of the woods.

Perhaps this is not the "norm" as far as those who are inflicted go, but it sure opened my eyes a bit wider.
