Targeting individuals with the use of drones may violate international law, according to the UN. LMAO.

Who cares what the UN says, it violates US law.

Why can't Obama just tell them to STFU? It would be refreshing to see someone with common sense in Washington.

luckydawg -> RE: This is the organization our president wants to cede sovereignty to (10/29/2009 1:23:26 AM)

But Obama just won the Nobel Peace Prize. He couldn't be illegally killing hundreds of people in war crimes, could he?

Musicmystery -> RE: This is the organization our president wants to cede sovereignty to (10/29/2009 1:55:11 AM)

When has the U.S. EVER listened to the U.N.?

luckydawg -> RE: This is the organization our president wants to cede sovereignty to (10/29/2009 2:14:49 AM)

As Dom Ken pointed out, it is illegal under US law also... A rather silly law put into effect by leftists, but a law nonetheless.

Starbuck09 -> RE: This is the organization our president wants to cede sovereignty to (10/29/2009 3:53:49 AM)

There are a couple of points to make here one is that the use of unmanned drones for some strikes skirts international law noone is aying they are illegal only that the methods used in coordinating and monitoring these strikes needs to be looked at...that is fair enough. The second is that there may be a move to ban unmanned rones as they represent a possibillity for shifting the power dynamic in favour of less wealthy less technologically developed countries. For the price of between ten and twenty fifth generation fighters you could produce hundreds of thousands of drones meaning that traditional notions of air superiority will be fundamentally and radically changed. It may be that powerful nations have a vested interest in capping this weapon system to preserve their own military ascendency.

We do listen to the UN!........................................................................................................when it suits our purpose....

Starbuck09 -> RE: This is the organization our president wants to cede sovereignty to (10/29/2009 4:47:46 AM)

Which to be fair Silver Mark is no different to any of the poweful members of the U.N. Britian, Russia, China, France are scarcely strict adherents to U.N. protocol when it would be detrimental to their interests.

SilverMark -> RE: This is the organization our president wants to cede sovereignty to (10/29/2009 4:50:52 AM)

We just seem to be more hypocritical about it...see Iraq.... The UN is pretty toothless unless one of the memebers is willing to enforce the issue at hand with the use of arms....

Starbuck09 -> RE: This is the organization our president wants to cede sovereignty to (10/29/2009 4:54:24 AM)

Absolutely Silver but don't beat yourself up over it, America tends to be a convenient punching bag for other nations but in reality we behave no better. I think for the most part the U.N. is a bad joke with weal member states the punchline. The best it can offer [I think] is a platform for poweless organisations that are being shafted in one way or another to voice their plight which can shame, through public opinion, powerful member states into action.

Starbuck, that's good in theory but no-one cares. I've never seen any of my neighbors going around in a huff because of anything the "U.N." has ever said.
You know, there's only so much "public opinion" to go around and the "U.N." is way down at the bottom of the list.
I couldn't care less if some college boy in the state dept is "outraged" at something happening in a foreign country.
Most people in the U.S. want out of the "U.N." but again, how do we make the hired help in Washington *listen?"
President Obama or any president can't "cede our soverenty" away.

Exactly what are you arguing here?

On one hand you seem to be saying Obama is capitulating to the UN while on the other hand pointing out he has continued Bush's policy of using drones.

mnottertail -> RE: This is the organization our president wants to cede sovereignty to (10/29/2009 10:06:51 AM)

I am unsure how we came to the president wanting to cede any soveriegnty to the UN.

It is ridiculous on its face.

I hate sockpuppets who do not argue in good faith, in fact I hate sockpuppets altogether.

Starbuck09 -> RE: This is the organization our president wants to cede sovereignty to (10/29/2009 10:44:12 AM)

Popeye I don't really disagree with anything you say but I will pick up on one thing. There seems to be a feeling in America that the U.N. is anti American or stymying American interests. But it simply isn't. Any one of the major powers could feel victimised by the U.N. Russia over Chechnya and South Ossetia China over Africa Britian with regards to shipping, Falklands e.t.c. You can't really cede power to the U.N. as there's nothing to cede it to. Noone wields power there except for the big five on the permanent security council and as they all loathe one another for the most part they simply veto anything that could hinder them and help their partners. The U.N. will never threaten American sovreignity just as it will never threaten British power. It's a tool to be used when it is convenient and discarded when it is not.  Obama knows that as much as Bush did if they ban drones it'll be because America plus the other members of the council have a vested interest in it.

MasterJack53 -> RE: This is the organization our president wants to cede sovereignty to (10/29/2009 12:53:16 PM)

I gotta laugh. drones are against the law and bring outrage. car bombs, kiddnappings that end in beheadings, IED's, and using children to blow up things  is common place. gotta love the UN. If I had my way Id kick their anti U.S. asses out of the country. Or at least start collecting the millions in fines they owe NYC.

luckydawg -> RE: This is the organization our president wants to cede sovereignty to (10/29/2009 1:02:51 PM)

Starbuck, I am not seeing how we would lose the "drone wars"...

They are slow and basically defenseless. We controll the sky, so can leisurly let these things drift at 40,000 feet. IF our enemies could shoot them down they would be useless.

Unless you make them into really fast jets, which chrash into things with a payload. Which are called cruise missles. And we have a long standing policy of not allowing our enemies to aim hundreds of thousands of Cruise Missles at us.

What would be the point of sending hundreds of thousands of lightly armed, slow moving drones against your enemies. It would take hours to get them into the air. Or tens of thousands of runways. The vast majority would be shot down with out delivering their payloads.

luckydawg -> RE: This is the organization our president wants to cede sovereignty to (10/29/2009 1:12:32 PM)

The issue here is that Obama is finding and killing specific people (with drones) working to detroy America.

I applaud. I am glad he was lying when he said terrorism is a criminal issue. He is not treating terrorism as a criminal matter. You don't blow up a criminals house, killing thier families with no trial based on secret evidence.

These are targeted killings. He is running a death squad. No different than Pinochet or the Blanco Mano.

It would be legal to attack a position with a drone in a legal war. To hunt someone from the air, for execution, with collateral damage, and no trial is obviously "illegal".

The Hypocrisy of many Obama supporters on this is asstounding, but good. Many of you fools actually thought Bush was a facist who wanted war for power and Money. Now that Obama is running a death squad and War for the same reasons (the actuall reasons, not the made up lefty ones), he deserves a Peace Prize.

tazzygirl -> RE: This is the organization our president wants to cede sovereignty to (10/29/2009 1:20:57 PM)

I never thought Bush wanted power... LOL
