The quote, below, brings up an important, & OMG -- thread relevant -- point, one that 3 year olds instinctively know: how to enter a social group. Ya watch. Watch until some understanding of what the group is doing is reached. Then, the 'socially successful' 3 year old (yep, there've been studies) will attempt to mimic what the group is doing & to blend into that whole . . . . . & it's what every age group older than toddlers does, too.
