You know the song "Dirty deeds...done dirt cheap?"

That's Enhanced Recovery Corporation. They are one of the filthiest businesses of that type in an industry that is crawling with slime (collections). Don't give them any information if you can help it. They often harrass people with non-existent debts that never happened or they harrass you for a debt incurred by someone else. Get a lawyer if you can, or look for legal assistance services in your town. These people are very, very slimy. Do NOT give them your SSN or any other information. They may try to get you to "trade" it for their not harassing you anymore. They will call and call and call. Tell them to "Drop Dead" when they call and add "Do not call me again or you will hear from my lawyer." If they continue to harass you after that they can be sued.

Very voften they try to get money from people for debts they never incurred. Be very careful around them. Do a google search on them, the horror stories are endless.

Check out the company with your Attorney Generals office, and go to the better business bureau. Because of the poor economy the number of scams have increased dramatically. One rule of thumb. If it sounds to good to be true, it usually is..I would never give out my SS number. That is a big red flag..Mike

'they keep calling DAddy to tell him they need to speak to him but they won't talk to him unless he gives them his SSN number. '

Bingo. Thats a scam. Theres no legitimate reason why ANYONE would ask for your SSN over the phone. Don't give it out and if they claim that you have to they are lying. They are not supposed to ask such information over the phone and you are NOT required to give it. If they have a problem with it tell them to talk to your lawyer. If they keep harassing you tell them you want on their do not call list and will consider any further attempts to contact you as harassment and that if there is an actual debt they are trying to collect that they can contact your lawyer regarding it. Tell them that and you'll likely never hear another word from them.

1. Never give out your SSN over the phone unless you are the one who initiated the call, and even then be careful.

2.  He should contact them in writing and tell them to quit harassing him.  If they don't, there are very serious consequences - like $5000 - if they don't comply.

Collection agents are required to follow FCRA.

Enhanced recovery corporation just in the words used to describe the corporation, one has to wonder what 'enhanced' means. Payment and debt recovery is one thing, and that can be a nasty business, but what could 'enhanced ' mean, hmmm, thugs at the door, broken legs etc, would anyone decent really want that on their conscience ?

All in business have to understand, giving credit to someone is a risk, and to be a risk, it is a gamble albeit a gamble based on intelligence, (largely). If the debtor does not pay, there are mechanisms in place to extract the payment, but if someone is truly unable to pay, i.e. has nothing, then the risk was a bad risk and a loss is made, but to use 'enhanced' recovery means, that has just got to be something shady, best keeping clear, if you have a conscience.

We figured it was a scam right from the start. We're always aware not to hand your ssn out to those calling and claiming they needed it but I wanted to see if any one heard of the company as they call 3 times a day sometimes.

It's a collection company. He obviously owes money somewhere.

https://www.erccollections.com/

Just from the little bit of research I've googled on them they seem like a legitimate collections company albeit their tactics for collecting are just as nasty as other collection agencies and thus there are complaints against them but they don't seem to be breaking any laws.

They probably ask for a ssn as a form of identification that the debt is under. Usually banks use ssn's for collections recoveries.

Y'know, I wonder what would happen if you gave them an incorrect SSN.

They usually will ask you to verify the last 4 digits of your ssn and then your address or phone number or some other kind of personal info. If all matches then they will log into your acct that they have for collecting and let you know how much you owe and set up some kind of system for payment.

If you gave incorrect info then they would ask you for some kind of other info like an acct number or ask you if you had an acct with such and such company or bank or whatever.

I used to work for a collection agency when I was about 19 and that's how it worked with us.

The majority of people either just hung up or not pick up at all at which point we'd leave an automated voicemail.

You only ever give out the last four digits to anyone, and that includes people who are legit.

Any time we owed an honest to god collection agency money they told us what we owed instead of hemming and hawing and trying to collect very private information from us.

We don't owe banks any money our credit cards are payed on time and we don't mess them up by mis using them, and his Bank of america bank account is in good standing.

It could really be money owed, but it's extreamly suspicious because I watch his fiances I know what he owes and he doesn't owe and there's no over due bills  or out dated accounts, or secret little oppsies where ya didn't do something n  never said anything

I 've owed money to credit agencies before, and they've said who they represented an why I owed money.

Usually because the library wasn't happy I waited 6 months to pay them 125 dollars I owed them. or something small

I told you to have him contact them in writing.  Why don't you do that?

Not necessarily.  Records are not 100% accurate.

Tell 'em that you're only going to work with them in writing going forward.  Force them to make a paper trail.
