a sweet baked pumpkin and a pumpkin fondue, and then I am making stuffed bell pepers tomorow.


What do you think of this meal bellpeppers with meat and rice and a lil sugar, and a sweet yam for every one and then a fresh veggie?

Do you two put sugar in everything ? How about stuffed peppers without the sugar ?

I agree... don't ruin the peppers dish by putting sugar in it.  Put garlic in and make it savory.

no I don't sevant but the recipe calls for honey.

I didn't like the pumpkin fondue, the sherry was nasty but it was fun making it. I haevne;t tried the other pumpkin dish yet.

leave the sugar out of the stuffed pepers. the baked yams, bake them, then just put some butter/margarine and salt & pepper on it. the fresh veggie is a great idea, try steaming the veggies, and you will have a fairly healthy meal.

Personally, I would forgo the sweet potato with this meal, as you have a starch (rice) in the stuffed pepper.

Congratulations on the cooking! It can be fun, and especially if someone offers to do the cleanup, if you do the cooking.

the custard didn't turn out right because I didn't beat the eggs since the recipe didn't say to but god it's good.

menu planning has its nuances and takes time and practice. the importance is balancing flavors and ensuring that you aren't loading up on one source at the expense of another. ideally there's something that helps to cleanse the palate if you're not consuming wine with the meal as well.

i'm uncertain of your recipe source. if it is a cookbook i'd suggest that you google it in the future before preparation to determine if feedback has been given on the recipe itself. if you found it online, i'd suggest looking at epicurious or saveur instead. both feature pumpkin in a variety of ways and you're able to see commentary on the dishes which helps.

Heres my recipe for stuffed peppers:

COOKED rice.. or prepare instant white rice ( a couple of cups worth)

In a Large empty bowl, crack in 2 eggs.. and scramble them with 3 Tablespoons milk. Stir into egg mixture whatever spices you like.. i love garlic.. but use chopped onion..instead if you dont like garlic. Me.. i use a lot of garlic.. a few dashes of Italian herbs.. and i also use chopped onions. Also a bit of rosemary.. or nearly any other dry spice you like.. just a dash, is good.

Into egg mixture.. pour your cooked rice..and mix it all together.. Your rice will turn yellow and spice flecked..but this insures that the flavors are distributed evenly through all the peppers. Now.. into the rice mixture.. crumble in raw hamburger (2 lbs)meat. Breaking it up into small chuncks makes it easier to combine the ingredients.

Using hands, i now smoosh all the rice and hamburger meat together... till its evenly mixed together

Hallow out green peppers.. smoosh the mixture down into the peppers mounding meat over the top a bit.
Pour canned tomato sauce (plain) over the tops and down the sides.

Bake for an hour 400 degree oven.

I put a pinch of sugar in tomato based recipes, I find it cuts the acidity. But I mean a pinch, under a quarter teaspoon.

Stuffed peppers with rice and a green vegetable sounds great to me. Or a salad on the side. Knowing us, I'd probably have an Italian bread as well just for the crunch of the hard crust.

And TFB, you deserve a lot of credit for learning how to cook. If you don't own a cookbook you really like, I would suggest you get the Fannie Farmer one. It has lots of recipes, explains how to do things in detail, and has a section on menu planning. As people have said, it isn't just one recipe you need but to coordinate the menu. It's more complicated than it appears to those who arent the head cook of a household.

pure I am usually cranky and tired after cooking but Daddy helped a lot and he really enjoyed hollowing out the pumpkins of their seeds and guts and scraping them clean, and I had a lot of fun to, and instead of being tired and cranky this time I was tired and SATISFIED!

I didn't even mind doing the bit of clean up that there was from using the measuring cups and stuff, and even washed a few extra dishes we didn't dirty as a favor to my mom* smiling happily*

yup I am going to plan meals too, but this meal is one I know right away I am interested in doing. I also wantto make a chicken pot pie from mostly scratch, home made dough, my dad knows how to do it he'll show me, fresh  veggies and stuff I cut up myself, and some cooked chicken, I cooked.  And then maybe a meat loaf, I'm just not sure what I'd want as complimentary pieces to go with the main dish.

My mom and my dad cook, and we have cook books and in the past I bought cook books like crock pot it and forget it, and I just never really looked at them, but I am now:)

Also love the internet for looking up cooking idea's though they do not help you plan the meal ya gotta do that part, but that's the fun part.


One thing I am running into which won't stop me is my mom wants to cook too , and she has a meal all planned for the four of us, so I tell her I am going to cook.......... and she says well  I already have the meal planned, so that's what we're eating and I say no problem I'll just cook it anyway and then that'll be food for tomorrow.

I think it's the fact I am trying to cook healthy and they think honey is to much sugar for someone trying to be healthy since you shouldn't cook with sugar  much or at all if you want it to be healthy.


That and I am a known junk food junky, hot pockets and tv dinners mainly and maybe they just think I don't need any sugar?:))

More than that is that these dishes shouldn't taste sweet. Onion and peppers aren't sweet and a sweet taste doesn't go with it. Meals should be balanced in color and flavor and texture. Sweet potatoes have some sweetness so the main dish accompanying them shouldn't be sweet. Potatoes aren't crunchy, so you might add a salad for that. The dishes should compliment each other, not match each other in terms of color, flavor, texture. Meatloaf and mashed potatoes cry out for a green vegetable and a red or orange one like carrots or red bell peppers stir fried, to give excitement to the plate and the taste buds.

But yes, you and your mother could trade off days for cooking, or just cook stuff the day ahead and then reheat it in time for everyone to eat. You want to put a green or orange vegetable with almost any meal that is meat based. Or a vegetable and a salad. As well as some kind of starch.

Health wise; brown rice is better than white, sweet potatoes are better than white potatoes, whole wheat bread is better than white bread.

I know that a lot of people think that sugar is evil, but I have never seen any proof that they have a clue what they are talking about. It reminds me of the idiot doctor that told my dad he had to start using low fat milk because whole milk is so bad for you. Maybe if people learned to eat things in moderation, they wouldn't have problems with it.

I don't think honey is bad actually i think its better than processed sugar and good for you if its organic.  However, i agree too many people don't know correct portions or how to do anything in moderation.  The problem also is people don't know what NATURAL sweetness is anymore.  So when you have things like sugar and even white foods or even dessert, people panic.  I do lol.  I don't panic with fat content, but lord my eyes fly right to the added sugars in things and i sometimes throw it back on the shelf as if its on fire lol.  Go figure.

But honey is a natural form of sweetness and is good for you also and you can get the kind where the only ingredient is well honey.  I also think some weird thing i can only eat so much honey per sitting before feeling nausous, like with toast i can only use less than a 1/2 a teaspoon on 2 slices.  But with sugar i can load up some butter and cinnamon with it and put it on toast for a sandwich concept.  I can only put less than a teaspoon in tea but can load up some tea with sugar. etc.  Sometimes i can't have honey at all as it will make my normal daily stress headaches worse after having it.
