One of my dogs is at my feet the other is on her lil princess pillow. Both get petted quite often and even though it's raining I go outside with them when they go out to go potty. OH god my dogs own me!!!

She used to love being outside, and at her moms she was chained to a long teather, since the yard wasn't fenced, and kept outside all day when not in the house. She's just gotten very lazy due to my softness for her.

As others have pointed out, and as a long time dog owner myself, you have to play and walk and run with the dog in order for it to know why it's outside (other than to do it's business). The dog can eventually learn to be comfortable with being outside but you, as the owner/master, have to actively show the pooch how to do it.

There is no substitute for this. It isn't going to read your mind as to what you want it to do.

It no longer matters what she used to do. She now only knows what her life is like now. Yes, this means you are going to have to retrain her to get used to being outside again.

On the food/over-eating issue... You should measure out her dry food every day. There is an amount that is recommended for what her weight should be.
Use that amount (unless the vet tells you differently) and do not give her more, no matter how unhappy she gets.

odioustoad -> RE: if you wanted your dog to stay outside to exercise but she cried insessantly (10/30/2009 12:23:40 PM)

and if you must absolutely give her treats, get some baby carrots.  they're still crunchy, and healthier for overweight dogs than boxed treats from the grocer's

Toppingfrmbottom -> RE: if you wanted your dog to stay outside to exercise but she cried insessantly (10/30/2009 12:30:41 PM)

Yup, I do, I give her one scoop and that's all she gets all day, and maybe if  I fed her later in the day and she's hungry again a tiny scoop then.

She loves carrots, she loves human food period, she'll eat apples and fruits and veggies and of course if it's a yummy plate to lick she'll lick that too, and we've cut back on letting her have plate glub.

And yes I went to play with her but she wants to chase the dog next door and cry, all I am doing is running ragged, saying come here, come play, she went to play but heard the dog next door and is now crying to play fence with him, and not me lol.

But I sure got something out of it, my hearts pounding and I'm out of breath now lol.

She's played and ran really well and now she's back inside because she's been out playing for like 20 minutes, even if I wasn't out there the whole time.

She ate some breakfast too.

My dog loves triscuit wheat crackers, as a treat.  She also likes baby carrots and apples, too.  Anything that they see you eat will become "AWESOME".  LOL

I live in an apartment and I don't have access to a yard, but my dog loves going out on the deck and laying in the sunshine.  She also loves the dog park, which is just a big field with a fence around it where you can let them off their leashes.  If your dog hasn't been around other dogs, ever or even if it's been a while, then I would do this slowly until your pup is socialized.

Good luck!

Do not feel bad. I know where both of mine are. One is sleeping on the leather sofa, and the other is burrowed into a very expensive blanket I purchased for my bed.

At 8:50 last night and 4:45 this morning, I was out, in the wind and pouring rain, walking dogs and feeding horses. Both times I got drenched. However, that is the deal I made when I took on the responsibility of having dogs and horses.

I am soooooooo not looking forward to those same trips come January.....when it is -30 or so with windchill, ankle breaking icy, and my bed with the down comforter is calling me.....or that leather sofa and that blanket I now have to share with a 12# redhead and a 40# blond. But I will be out there, freezing my ass off, because it's part of the deal.

Actually there's a few things she turns her nose up at even if mommy is eating them, but pretty much anything is game lol.

Thank you, I know I got a ot of work to do to undue our lazyness and I just want her to be healthy an happy.

Currently the other dogs are barking and she's upset they're barking so she's barking and her tails strait up in the air, and I keep telling her to hush, and she'll bark some more, and I tell  her I said hush, so she'll quietly oof under her breath, and she's like mommy, something is out there! MOM I  SAID SOMETHING IS OUT THERE DON'T YOU HEAR ME!

Because I'm not concerned the other dog is barking.

Take the dog for long walks. I mean a couple of miles in the morning and at night. My daughter brings her dog over when he gets to fat and I spend a week walking him to get his weight down. Dogs need to know who the alpha is. My daughter has 2 dogs and her and hubby can not take them for walks unless they have the leash on. The dogs control both of them. They come to my place and they are never on the leash until they go home. I know that some people cannot be Dom/Domme to anyone not even their pets.

I'm not in the shape for long long walks, but I am working on that. And when I am in shape we'll walk so much both our feet fall off lol.

As much as she's a pansy when it comes to not getting what she wants, she's a very loud  little monster about her territory and barking when something is perceived to threaten that. She'll eat you alive you dare bother her property, and I mean figuratively eat you, but she is very alert an a watch dog.

Dogs can have metabolic problems like hypothyroidism and diabetes, too, which could contribute to her weight gain.  If finances improve, a workup at the vet's would be a good idea.

Toppingfrmbottom -> RE: if you wanted your dog to stay outside to exercise but she cried insessantly (10/30/2009 1:51:33 PM)

wind, We've worked ourself into  more debt  than we had taking her to the vet, because something was wrong, so we know she's heatly at least she was up to this month.

She's completely healthy except her weight and she has some urinary incontinence, and she leaks pee, so she needs to be on prowin to stop the pee leakage.

She was having crotch region problems a lot, so we took her to the very like every month, and it was UTI's and or just crotch irritation.

MadameMarque -> RE: if you wanted your dog to stay outside to exercise but she cried insessantly (10/30/2009 2:11:25 PM)

Dogs are pack animals.  If you are their alpha, and you deny them access to their alpha, it will make them instinctively anxious.  If the dog identifies as your alpha, they still need access, to watch you and do their job.

But more importantly, they're sentient, conscious beings, that need companionship and stimulation and something to do whenever they're awake, not just when it's convenient for their human keepers.  If you sit out in the yard for a hours at a time, day after day, with no book, no phone, no company, you can see how long it takes you do become anxious and despondent.

About walking a dog, it does more than entertain and exercise them.  It satisfies that need to survey the territory.  If you walk a dog in a neighborhood and allow them to go where they choose (within the bounds of safety), you may notice that they pick different routes at different times, desperately trying to satisfy that need.

DesFIP -> RE: if you wanted your dog to stay outside to exercise but she cried insessantly (10/30/2009 2:16:31 PM)

Since she has no stamina, take her out three times a day for a short walk each time. This way she won't be too tired to walk and she'll get more exercise. 15 minutes at a time, three times a day. As she gets stronger work up to half an hour three times a day and so on.

My dog can't bear to be parted from me. He'll go out in the yard several times a day but not for very long each time. Just put her out for 5 or ten minutes each time and then bring her back. She'll get more accustomed to it if these are short times.

Desfip, Daddy and I when we go out, and even when it's just ginger and I, We take her down the road and back and that's it, since it's all mommy can manage as well. She does extreamly well at that, but is tired too when we get home, and mommy* ME* feels like keeling over lol.

But yes we'll get better!
