But the more you do just that, the sooner you'll both be in better shape. So do the walk, come back and nap, then do it again. Inside of two weeks you will be feeling stronger, I promise.

Is Ginger good on the leash because mine's terrible on it. He's great off the leash but pulls when on it.

Phoenixpower -> RE: if you wanted your dog to stay outside to exercise but she cried insessantly (10/30/2009 4:02:12 PM)

I am not adding to walks again, as this was mentioned...well...often...however, whilst my comparison sucks a little bit as my furrys are 4 cats and not a dog, nevertheless I thought to give you an example from my torty girl pepper...

She is addicted to treats...and yes, I mean addicted (never had such a nutter before and I had many cats in almost 3 decades of my life), as mentioned in a different topic, if I don't have any she keeps getting on my nerves about it for days so at some point I buy them again just that she shuts up....

That fact made me a bit nervous that she might gain weight as she is not outside much (I think she encountered one of the bullycats when she was younger or maybe the fox, I don't know, however, she only enjoys being outside when the door or window is open that she knows she can come back at any time...once I close it she panics.). Ergo, her exercises are limited...now, whilst I don't overfeed her with her treats I was concerned (as it simply is a difference to the 2 boys who are outside to 80% as they love to be outside) that she might gain weight...so I started to make it a bit more difficult for her to get her treats...(though with quite amazing results...either she has a significantly better nose then the boys or it is simply due to her greedyness)...and started to place them all over the place...so at moments when she is outside I might hide treats in my shelves on top of my wardrobe, etc...and gosh, she is in less then a minute and already close to the treat...she gets it straight away...

so basically...when she wants her treats, then often she has to "earn" them...in her case (here the example sucks as that doesn't quite fit with dogs) she tends to have to climb up the curtains to get onto the shelf, or jump onto my small fridge, from there onto the big fridge to then get onto the shelf...so instead of just giving it to her....she has to "move her muscles"...and by now she tends to check it even without treats being there...

so maybe you would also find a way to exercise your dog with interesting search exercises or so...

So far none of my cats were overweight and whilst my boys are heavy in their cases it is their muscles due to roaming a lot outside, they don't look heavy...but gosh, they have almost their 5kg by now...

Whatever you decide to do with your dog...good luck [:)]

But yes, as LaTigresse said, we have taken on the responsibility with the pet...my 4th cat I only got as my girl (as stated) is scared outside when the door is shut and therefore has to be inside when I am not at home...at some point I thought about that she is far too much on her own...ergo I got her a birman kitten as birmans don't go out much either...therefore she has company now and is about 70% less clingy then she used to be when I got home and seems to be much happier and relaxed now...was costly but a normal kitten would probably not have done the trick as a "normal" kitten would be likely to enjoy the outside as the boys do once it would be older...so the birman was chosen for her tendency in her breed to be inside a lot (she has her brief strolls when I am at home, then the girls take their sniff outside for a little while and come happy back). So at times we have to kick ourselves in the butt and to do what is good for the pet...if we like it or not, but thats what it means to be a responsible owner...[8|] Good luck [:D]

edited as I forgot to mention that my pets don't get human food from me (except meat sometimes), when curry was young he thought to can eat what I eat and had a go at my chocolate maltesers on my bedside table...that made clear to me to keep them out of reach...I think by now he would not even be attracted to it anymore, but I don't give them food which is fattening for them as some people give their pets remaining chips or so....nope, my cats have their cat food and sometimes meat from my plate, but that's it!

I am sure its been said but if she is used to being with her or indoors, you pretty much are going to have tp reteach her to play outside.  Don't just take her for a walk perhaps take her to a park and throw a stick with her or a frisbee or some outside toy, or do the same thing with her in your yard. What you can start doing is slowly with her -- take her for a walk and then spend 10 minutes playing in the yard with her and slowly extend it, use words like play and fun and such when you are walking her and playing with her so when you walk back inside and say go play she will know what that means and eventually will go do it.  Make sure she has toys she can play with alone and water out there.  Another thing you can do is when you go to petsmart or whereever you get stuff for her, take her with her and talk to someone about the issue see what they recommend.  All in all, its the same thing that humans have to do when they go from being inactive to active -- its hard and sometimes painful and yeah relearning things you may have once knew or did.

scuse the caps, but HELL NO. She pulls and she yanks my arm off and she don't listen, and she'll listen to daddy but only some, we spend half the walk telling her HEEL, or SIT, OR COME, because she's so excited she won't listen.

I have a terrier.. I call her a terror who is like that on a leash. I take a squirt bottle of water and some treats with me when we walk. When she's bad she gets squirted with the water bottle. When she's good she gets treats. The more I walk her the more these behaviors help.

I also found that activities such as agility help with training and with play. My dog responds best when I say YAY! What a good girl and clap my hands for activities that are used as play. I get excited she gets excited. With dogs it's all about how you condition them.

So then she simply needs to go back to obediance school. You can't stop training a dog or they forget. I think what everyone has been telling you that in order to have the dog you wish it requires constant vigilance. It's part of being an animal owner. Besides unless you are doing it for competition, which I doubt you are because it requires a lot of work, traveling, and money agility isn't something to be passed or failed. It should be done because the dog likes to do it.

I only read the OP but here is my answer:

My dog, Ace is as spoiled and pampered as they come. She wont go outside in the rain and god forbid I think she go out in the yard before I shovel the snow. lol She is not an outside dog but she is a sheltie so she needs excersice. So I walk her and when I want her outside I go outside with her. We play fetch for hours at a time or play on my trampoline together. Its good excersice for us both.

Ginger lays in bed all day and rarely does anything She used to be very active when we got her,  and then she got fatter than she already was due to someone elses poor care* not ours*  Now she's so fat cause we free feed her and didn't really walk her, since she has a huge y ard, and I am fixing that food part and I try to walk her everyday,. Since she's gotten fatter, She's now VERY lazy and tires to quick, she won't hardly play or run or do anything she used to want to do and beg to do. So I am starting to make her go out and actually be outside, I also walk her everyday if possible.

so I t hought I'd close the door and keep her outside but she's crying and whining and yapping at my door, and is probably  on the floor pouting on the otherside of the door.  I should o closed the other door so she'd be outside completely and I wouldn't hear her yapping.

First, dogs are pack animals. They want to be with you, in or out.

Second, DOGS NEED AN HOUR OR TWO OF EXERCISE DAILY, AND TIME OUTSIDE IN THE YARD ISN'T GOING TO DO IT! You must take them for this exercise yourself, whether a long walk, play in the park/field, whatever. Fortunately, exercise is good for owners, too--and even fun and relaxing.

Finally, dogs LOVE to play. They can be motivated to do almost anything presented as such.

As for tiring...you'll both get more strength and wind as your daily exercise habits improve.

IN other responses, you note HELL NO, as the dog pulls, is all excited. HELLO! Ginger is bored and gets excited when she finally gets the chance to go outside! If she had sufficient regular exercise, she'd calm down a LOT.

Get outside. Take Ginger. She's a dog...she needs to run and play--with YOU.

I actually feel really sad reading this thread.... you are mistreating your dog by overfeeding her and not exercising her.  You mention that she used to play and run and now is a lump.  You say that you take her for a walk when you can..... in the past week how many times has she been walked by you?

I realise that you are having a difficult time at the moment however having a pet means being responsible for them and sometimes the things we think are showing them our love eg. over-feeding them and pampering them are actually doing more harm than good.

Make a plan to walk her every day, not an I will walk her if I can or I will try to walk her.  Start with a ten minute walk three times a day and do it rain, hail or shine.  Seriously that is 5 minutes down the road and back.  Gradually increase the time you are out for each walk and gradually reduce it till you are taking her for one or two long walks a day.

Wanders, yes I realize we're killing her with kindness, I didn't see any harm in letting her have a whole bowl of food instead of the recomended amount, and  I didn't realize how lazy she'd gotten till I started trying to play with her and she is to tired to play after 5 minutes. WE've pampered her and spoiled her right into lazy poor health.

She's been walked 3 times  and today she'll go out with me again Wander:) KEep in mind I only started walking her this week.

And yesterday I chased her up and down the yard because that's her favorite game, she'll stop an letcha get so close then dart offinto the wind lol.

She needs to be trained, walmart and petco have treat balls where you can put dog treats in the ball and teach them to play fetch. (its a wonderful tool) The other option is to take her for walks. To feed and water a dog is not enough, you have to take care of their every need even their need for excersize and to not do that is neglectful and if she is overweight it could be seen as abusive by some, including myself. Just as having an immasiated dog is (just on the opposite end of the spectrum).

Edited to add: I dont mean to sound harsh but the more i thought about this the more it bothered me as a pet owner and someoen who works with several rescue groups.

Set up play dates. Let them run themselves stupid. Dogs and owners will be all the happier for it.
