This is the reason she pulls on her lead. Walk her three times daily, rain or shine. and you will see her behavior improving.

As to playing with her outside...of course she is distracted by a barking dog or other noises. She is clueless as to what is happening. Be patient...let her investigate, then when she is done, resume playing with her.

She don't like balls she likes tug of war and rip the shit out of her cloth toy and then look at you really satisfied lol.  She'll play she knows how but if you're playing and the neighbors dog barks, she'll forget all about you is what I meant to say:D

I only read the OP but here is my answer:

My dog, Ace is as spoiled and pampered as they come. She wont go outside in the rain and god forbid I think she go out in the yard before I shovel the snow. lol She is not an outside dog but she is a sheltie so she needs excersice. So I walk her and when I want her outside I go outside with her. We play fetch for hours at a time or play on my trampoline together. Its good excersice for us both.

She needs to be trained, walmart and petco have treat balls where you can put dog treats in the ball and teach them to play fetch. (its a wonderful tool) The other option is to take her for walks. To feed and water a dog is not enough, you have to take care of their every need even their need for excersize and to not do that is neglectful and if she is overweight it could be seen as abusive by some, including myself. Just as having an immasiated dog is (just on the opposite end of the spectrum).

Edited to add: I dont mean to sound harsh but the more i thought about this the more it bothered me as a pet owner and someoen who works with several rescue groups.

They do but be cautious of how hard you pull on your end you can easily do damage to their teeth or gums if you pull to hard. Especially if they dont have proper teeth care.

So let her run! If she only runs the fence line when you are out there...then stay out there and let her run the fence line...its getting you the result you wanted right? She is exercising.

I promise if you let her do it long enough she'll get over the newfound excitement and come back to play with you.

My dog gets walked only once a day...ok..usually...Im awful at it honestly, we almost always miss at least two nights a week...but even if I cant stick the leash on her and head down the road, I head outside with her. All I have to do is sit on the front porch and peel potatoes or cut up things for dinner or go over my oldest sons schoolwork (he is home-schooled) and she will run around in the yard and play with her toys and chase the cats and wear herself out. If I put her outside loose by herself, and I go back inside, she will sit at the door and cry. You dont necessarily have to DO anything with her outside..just be outside with her, she'll find things to do.

First, dogs are pack animals. They want to be with you, in or out.

Second, DOGS NEED AN HOUR OR TWO OF EXERCISE DAILY, AND TIME OUTSIDE IN THE YARD ISN'T GOING TO DO IT! You must take them for this exercise yourself, whether a long walk, play in the park/field, whatever. Fortunately, exercise is good for owners, too--and even fun and relaxing.

Finally, dogs LOVE to play. They can be motivated to do almost anything presented as such.

As for tiring...you'll both get more strength and wind as your daily exercise habits improve.

IN other responses, you note HELL NO, as the dog pulls, is all excited. HELLO! Ginger is bored and gets excited when she finally gets the chance to go outside! If she had sufficient regular exercise, she'd calm down a LOT.

Get outside. Take Ginger. She's a dog...she needs to run and play--with YOU. (Musicmystery)

I agree with all of the above. Because dogs are pack animals, they need a leader. They are not comfortable without one. An alpha dog will assert itself as a leader, if you do not. This is actually quite common.

Also, dogs need trained. They don't automatically know how to sit and heel and do want you want. The dog didn't flunk obedience school, you did. Dogs are born to be obedient to who they percieve as their leader. Once you have established yourself as that, then be consistent in your training.

If you want an animal you can spoil and indulge with minimal upkeep, try a cat.

Greetings,

I highly recommend this book: Don't Shoot the Dog by Karen Pryor. She is a well known animal behavior scientist , who originally got her start working with marine mammals in sea world. Since then she has trained all kinds of animals and people in all kinds of situations and presented papers all around the world. I attended a seminar of hers. She also has a site: http://www.clickertraining.com/ Also "It's Me or the Dog" on Animal Planet is pretty good. (I can't agree with the Cesar Milan enthusiasts- a number of professional dog trainers I have spoken to detest his practices to the point they can't bear to watch. (But, to each their own).

Hope this helps:)

Well wishes,
anna

I'm aware. I not only have my own dogs, but train and work with rescued "high risk" dogs on a pretty regular basis.

Yup, it was just a bit frustrating to go play with her and all she'd do was chase the neighbor dog, but I can get in on that too, I can chase her chasing the neighbor dog, and we can do like you do in football where one guy fakes out the other by pretending to go left then when you go right he switches tactics. That's really fun to do to Ginger.

YUP! That's Ginger if you're outside naturally she'll prowl the front yard check things out sniff it a bit, bark at something interesting and then if something REALLY interesting comes by, like the mail man then she REALLY gets excited and barks and runs up and down the fence with her tail strait in the air like HEY YOU, YOU THERE WHAT ARE YOU DOING, OOF OOF FEAR ME I AM WARNING YOU OFF MY PROPERTY.

And then when he's gone she'll trot about all happy and excited and proud.

yeah:( I never tug super hard and I don't give her toys that can cut her gums or make  her bleeed.

She tugs on very soft cloths, and they'll rip before she hurts herself.

One of her most fav things is to get all vicious on the cloth and shake it to "death" and then give it back you tug it a few times an she shakes it " to death again"

Edited because I thought you said not to tug to hard an it was someone else who said that.

Yeah she is, Some dogs also have really bad leash manners because nobody taught them any better. Daddy taught her to heel and I am trying to make her listen to me too, so if there's a reason to make her heel I can do it.

The problem is I'm not really very dominant over her and I need to be, so she'll listen I guess, that's why she don't listen to me.

My dog was so easy going and listend to any one who commanded him, so I'm not used to her who'll only listen if you're more dominant than she is.

I prolly sound like a collasal idiot of a pet owner now huh lol.

I shouldn't tell you this you'll all think I am an idiot or she's a monster or something but Ginger is other dog agressive, She'll attack any other dog that she see;s or is in her property You can't trust her around other animals that she doesn't know are not ok to be on her property, and even then she may still start shit with them:(

So I am baffled why she likes this little dog, but she does.

Anna, may I call you Anna? I was thinking of enrolling her into obediance school, her and I both, but she's other dog agressive, so most classes don't want you to bring an ODA dog to their classes.

I'll look into the books and start learning how to assert myself so I know what I am doing and she hopefully listend.

It's not uncommon. If a dog isn't socialized on a regular basis they can easily become other dog aggressive. Another thing is too is that you probably unbeknownst to you tense up around other dogs for fear she'll attack. Every dog trainer I have ever worked with states this is a problem. I have a little australian shepherd who was dog aggressive and if I don't take him out around other dogs for training he still gets that way from time to time. You can train them (in small steps) so that they aren't, but it's a constant effort. It's taken me two years to trust him off leash around other dogs we don't know. Even now if a dog off leash rushes us as we are walking he will try to attack. If they approach slowly then it's all good. If he's off leash he doesn't much care either way. My dogs are trained so that I can simply take a book out into the yard and read and they will play, chase squirrels whatever as long as I go with them. For instance this morning I went and raked leaves while they chased each other around the yard and jumped through my pile of leaves. I also have this huge hard plastic ball, which one of them has learned to herd around the yard.. I.e she pushes it around with her nose. Not only is it physical exercise, but it's mentally exhausting for her too. It works similar to a treat ball. They have to figure out how to get the treat.. she has to figure out how to move the ball around the yard.

There's a pattern here. Constant training for you and the dog.

Holly we used to walk her but it was sporadic, so I mean I only just started doing it very often and trying to do it every day this week.

I should of clarified that.

I'm not her primary parent, daddy is but I'm free more often* ok all day* so I am trying to learn disipline in helping her and in helping me, since you know from the past posts I made  I am really apathetic about things and let them slide, but I'm trying to learn better.

Maybe this might help.. Think of your dog as your submissive. You need to establish rules and boundaries otherwise the relationship fails and essentially the dog tops from the bottom. You need to be strict and firm. That dog depends on you for survival. You can either help the dog by controlling their food and exercise or you can hurt the dog.
