barelynangel -> Have you ever ran or wanted to run a Marathon? (11/1/2009 12:56:37 PM)

I am watching the ING New York City Marathon today and the Men's Marathon was won by a Man from the US -- (Yeah USA!!) Zeb Keflezighi!! Congrats to him!

However, a marathon always seemed something well out of reach for someone like me who HATES running lol.  Even when i ran track in HS and college i would do my best to get out of the long runs even though i was a great quarter horse, i honestly hated running lol go figure.  I ran track just to keep in shape for basketball.  However, after watching the Biggest Loser people run one also, i am wondering --

1.  Have you ever ran a Marathon -- if so, what was your motivation for doing so and/or why did you choose too - i mean i know people run long distance but what was it about doing a marathon or marathons that drew you?

2.  If you ever wanted to run one -- why?

Are you aware of the stand up comic (and occasional actor) Eddie Izzard? He's just spent the last year running a lot of marathons. A shitload, in fact: I was very impressed that he was up to that at his age. Have a look on Google. I imagine he'll be spending most of the next three or four months lying down now...

Good- I hope they chase the wall street trash out of the country!

Unfortunately, due to severe disk degeneration in my lower back my running days are long gone, but I used to run quite a bit. Didn't do any marathons, but did run quite a few 10Ks. About 6 or 7 years ago I did joing a group that trained it's members to run a marathon, but I had to drop out of that. I did manange a half marathon in training before I left though.

Running longer distances does get to be a habit and the endorphrin high after running is great. After a horse riding accident in the late 80s I was in the hospital for a week and a half and couldn't wait to get back out running again. The day after I got home I was out walking, and in a week I was back to covering...at a walk...my regular 4 1/2 mile route. On days you can't run, for whatever reason, you get antsie...not unlike some drug habits...and you need to get your "fix" of exercise.

Running CAN be very boring, but if you can find someone that runs at your level to run with the miles just fly by and it really doesn't feel as much like "exercise".

So no, I have never ran a marathon, though I would have liked to....I would really have enjoyed something like a triathalon, an ultra-marathon, or cross country, but just never made it that far.

What would draw me to want to do that? I think moslty just the self-satisfaction of knowing I was ABLE to have done something like that.

I had a friend that was addicted to running.

I dont have the stamina to do so.

I wish i did, it would make exercising so much easier   I mean heck of all the things to be addicted too lol.

Q1 no
Q2 no, I see no value in it

There is a great book: "4 Months to a 4 Hour Marathon" which is a great starting point even if you just want to get into running. Solid advice for the beginner.

No but there's a few people who owe me money who I'd like to make run one, shotgun at their backs etc oh, and no cheering crowds.
You know like somewhere very isolated.

I tried training for one once, just because I thought it would be a worthy challenge, but I have too many lower disk problems. My lumbar spine just can't handle the pounding that comes from such a long run.

I was a little disappointed, because once I get it into my head to do something difficult, I don't rest easy until I've done it; but on the other hand, i absolutely hate running anyway, so part of me was rather relieved. I ran in high school to keep in shape for the basketball team - and I ran a lot when i lived in Hawaii, because running in the rain isn't anywhere near as miserable as riding a bike in the rain on a dirt road, and I'd have often had to go pretty long periods without cardio if i hadn't taken up running - but bottom line is, i hate it. It bores the hell out of me.

Rhodes85 -> RE: Have you ever ran or wanted to run a Marathon? (11/1/2009 11:16:06 PM)

Personally I always wanted to do one, but i'm just not a runner. I can't do it. I can bench twice my weight, ski, play tennis, paintball and spent half my life learning to fight hand to hand. But i'll be damned if I can do anything that involves running. I just can't do it. Its probably got alot to do with the fact that I am slightly athesmatic and don't have the lung capacity for it, but I had a hard enough time doing the six laps in 12 minutes in high school to pass gym. lol

on the upside, i'm an expert skiier and a certified instructor. so its all good I suppose.

Confirmed running addict, here. [:D]

I can easily run a half-marathon, but a think a full marathon is just stupid. Maybe not for others, but for me. I just don't see the need. There's a point of diminishing returns, and a full marathon is well past that point, for me.

DesFIP -> RE: Have you ever ran or wanted to run a Marathon? (11/2/2009 10:37:44 AM)

Not a runner. Never yet have had a sports bra that would keep the girls from bouncing.
Have a friend who used to do triathlons though and admire them enormously.

Years ago I lived along the route in Manhattan and we would go out and offer orange quarters to the runners.

LaTigresse -> RE: Have you ever ran or wanted to run a Marathon? (11/2/2009 10:40:48 AM)

I used to run like a deer, pre puberty. After that I grew too many curvy bouncy things that make running uncomfortable.

Phoenixpower -> RE: Have you ever ran or wanted to run a Marathon? (11/2/2009 10:42:07 AM)

I was always more a sprinter then a runner...so...nope...

barelynangel -> RE: Have you ever ran or wanted to run a Marathon? (11/2/2009 10:46:06 AM)

Thanks for the information offered, i can imaging what a runner feels but when i think of doing it lol i am like ugh.  But i admire people who can run and more so those addicted to it.   They also have a coach potato to 5K book that is pretty popular and that's only 3ish miles lol.  Maybe i should start there!

I am not sure i want to do this but reading these comments helps put it into perspective especially from those who actually do it.

kdsub -> RE: Have you ever ran or wanted to run a Marathon? (11/2/2009 11:18:12 AM)

No marathons but for many years I ran 35 miles a week... It was a habit from my military days. It is very habit forming and like Igor I loved it…even when 100 plus or below zero…In fact I took pride in running in zero weather in shorts…lol.

I can’t see how people run or walk on a treadmill watching television. I loved to feel the breeze in my face…see the blue sky or storm clouds. I did try to run different routes and places and remember this…Always start out in winter running into the wind…wear good shoes…do not over dress… and do not run on your toes…

If you have a problem to work out…personal or work…there is no better way then to run and think it through. It makes the miles fly by and the increased blood flow helps you think.

When you are done after a good run you feel relaxed as never before...and your mood will be brightened…try it you will see.

Good luck Butch

I do a lot of walking, hiking and riding. I get my fix that way. Running just seems to focused and introspective. I enjoy the interaction I have with nature when I go at a slower pace.

When the weather gets really awful is when I struggle. I have a love hate relationship with my elliptical.
