My boss does 10 miles every morning, and he is doing a half marathon in January...I would honestly love to be able to join him, but my knees just wont take the stress of running anymore. I used to run 2 or 3 miles a day back in high school and even afterwards, but blew out the cartiledge in one of my knees playing sports and even after two surgeries I just cant seem to run more than a mile or so without it swelling up to the size of a grapefruit...so I keep my cardio to the elliptical machines and let everyone around me tell me about their running. Every once in a while I get it into my head that I should at least try for a 5K...just to DO it...but it never seems to happen. I cant keep the training up long enough for the knee to not go out on me again and I have to wait two weeks for the swelling and soreness to go away and have to start all over on my training again....

I'm not that big fan of running in groups and I hate running on asphalt...only do riding paths or paths through the forest.
Whether it's the length of a marathon or just an hour..it's the only time I can clear my mind completely and it makes you feel good. If the weather sucks you usually realize it's not half as bad as you expect it to be when you get your ass out there.

nope...i gave up running when i found out what shin splits are. [sm=injured.gif]

Just to keep up my reputation as a know it all....[:D]...shin splits are usually caused by running with your weight too far forward...this is often a problem in women with big breasts....[8D]

The best thing to do in this case is to throw them up over your shoulders then you can run on your heels...easier to run down hill as well...

I just had this conversation with him yesterday morning.
I've always wanted to run in a marathon. It's on my list of things to do before I die.
Hopefully it's not the last thing I do. That would suck to drop dead doing that. [:o]

When I had them I was told it was caused by one of two things.....bad shoes......not stretching enough before walking/running.

All I know, I never EVER want to feel that again. I would rather birth a litter before feeling that hot knife against my shin bone feeling, again.

Politesub53 -> RE: Have you ever ran or wanted to run a Marathon? (11/2/2009 4:08:43 PM)

I have done a few half marathons and used to run ten miles every other day. If you are considering running on a regular basis, make sure you have some good running shoes that support and cushion the foot. I would also suggest not running every day as this gives your muscles a chance to relax back into shape.

The downside......I have had a partial knee replacement.

I've been thinking about running again. I could stand to lose a few pounds. I'm a little nervous about putting all that extra stress on my joints though. Maybe loosing a few pounds first then taking up jogging or the like first.

Maybe some very light jogging, or even fast walking would help. I wouldnt advise doing too much too quickly though. The stress comes from the foot striking the ground, especially a hard surface, at speed.

See many people have the issue i have, my knees.  I mean they hurt many times just for the hell of it and i am afraid if i start running on them, i won't be able to walk.  I do the eliptical a lot because walking on the treadmill hurts.

But i do second the running shoe thing -- i went and got fitted by a running store with my shoes, they were really great in that he measured my foot and then had me try on different shoes with different type socks and had me walk and run on the sidewalk out front while watching me.  But the shoes he got for me were heaven, as i have a really long foot but its like a AAA for tennis shoes so it has never fit right, which doesn't help my legs also.

I was teasing about the big boobs...but not about good shoes and the reason for shin splints. By experience and as I was taught shin splints are most often caused by running with your weight forward and toward your toes. Sprinters run this way but long distance runners should have the front of their heels hit the ground first without over striding then roll up on the toe...sort of a rolling strike rather then a blow This takes stress off the front of the leg and if you notice there is more padding on the heel...both your foot and a good shoe to absorb impact.

I’m sure there are other reasons and I am not a Podiatrist so perhaps I am wrong.

I just started jogging about 6 months ago and I'm already addicted. Its my version of therapy[:D]

I only run about 4 miles in the morning so I'm no where near marathon ready. It is a goal of mine though. Maybe one day soon.

As for the bigger boobs issue, I just double up on sports bra's. Not very comfortable for sure but it gets the job done. It was tough getting started at first but its so much fun now. I actually feel worse on the days that I skip it.

I'm a parent. I've run marathons on a daily basis.

Throw in a couple of skinned knees accompanied by a silent scream, and I'll set a record in the hundred yard dash.

You would be surprised how far you can run...most programs for marathons, if I remember correctly, only want you to only run 3 or 4 miles through the week. Then on a Saturday run a long one…start at 8...it is easy to double your everyday distance. Then work up to a 10 once a week…then up to a 20 over time…then back off the week before the event.

Sounds easy huh…I’ve run the distance but never in a race and that was walking a minute every 10 and I wont say my time…lol

The big problem is the time to do it…not the ability…I’ll bet just about any healthy person could train and run a marathon…if they only had the time to train…who does?

Regarding your knees, if you can see a trainer or sports doctor about your knees then you probably should before starting a running program. He or she can probably tell you what you need to do to strengthen your knees or might even recommend that running is not for you. Perhaps bicycling or some other form of exercise that is less stressful on the joints would be better for you.

agirl -> RE: Have you ever ran or wanted to run a Marathon? (11/3/2009 2:20:10 AM)

I've never been a fan of running (big boobs) but a friend of mine challenged me to take part in a 16 mile cross-country race and I've always liked a challenge.....lol

I started training 3 months before the race and ran 3 miles, 5 miles and 13 miles each week, after the few few weeks of building up to it.

My only goals were 1) To complete the race  2) Not to come last ....lol.... and 3)  to do it in under 3 hrs.

I completed the race......I was second to last......... and I finished in 3hrs and 3 mins . I was still happy.......When I took my running shoes off they were full of blood as a toenail on each foot has come off. I never ran again. It was one of the toughest things I ever put myself through.

Not just no, but HELLS no.

Y'all know that the name came from a Greek legend in which the runner dropped dead from exhaustion, right? [&:]

What would be a good pair of shoes? I suppose I will do some research but wouldn't mind some help pointing me in the right direction.
