Jealousy?

Nah.

Hey, but seriously, when are those guys going to get rid of those pin-striped jammies and get real uniforms?

slvemike4u -> RE: Bring back the draft. (11/6/2009 3:56:27 PM)

Now I'm pissed......jammies?

Personally I think the US should adopt a system similar to the one in Germany. There, everyone is required to provide a term of military service, or, if they prefer they serve the same amount of time in a non-military role providing service in either a non-combat role or an assigned, non-military one.

Though I also have to say that Robert Heinlein had something of an interesting idea in the novel Starship Troopers. Basically a system in which everyone could live normally as anyone else would in their country, except for the lack of a right to vote. They would gain the right to vote only through enlistment in the armed forces or, if they were unfit for that, in another capacity that was just as difficult and dangerous. The basic concept being that those that do have the right to vote would exercise that right with the people as a whole in mind, rather than their own best interest. The fact that they were willing to risk their lives for the right to vote was proof that they would use such a right wisely. In short, they prove through said military service that they place the needs of society above their own personal well-being. It has a certain logic to it, though I don't know how well such a system would work if attempted.

Just my thoughts on it anyway. Oh and if anyone is interested in the book i've got a copy of it in pdf format that i'd be happy to share.

Rhodes, the system in Germany is what I advocate. Serve your country in some fashion fora short time, military or nonmilitary. Invest more of ourselves than just bitching and whining. There are too many people in this country who feel that they are entitled to everything no matter what the cost. My time in the military taught me a number of things. I learned that a human being can find a way to overcome almost any obstacle in his path. I learned the true meaning of teamwork. Of course, I also learned that when drunk a human being can cram their head through those little flaps on trash can lids if they are feeling sick.

Isnt the German system ridiculously low on the length of service though? (less than a year or less than 9 months? something like that) 9 months isnt even enough time to train someone much less have them actually serve. Or is their idea to expose people to the military through mandatory but short service and build an "all volunteer" long term force?

mnottertail -> RE: Bring back the draft. (11/13/2009 7:26:05 AM)

I thought it was two years when I was around FRG, maybe they have shortened it

Irishknight -> RE: Bring back the draft. (11/13/2009 9:35:02 AM)

I had also heard 2 years.

mnottertail -> RE: Bring back the draft. (11/13/2009 9:41:14 AM)

I believe there are some countries that have a year and a half, and even one or two that might have a three quarter, but yeah.........

willbeurdaddy -> RE: Bring back the draft. (11/13/2009 9:46:17 AM)

"Germany
Germany has a mandatory military service of nine months for men. Women may volunteer and are allowed to perform the same jobs as men. A conscientious objector may write a petition requesting permission to do a civilian “substitute service” (“Ersatzdienst”), which is usually accepted, whereupon he is expected to serve 10 months. Overall, however, during the past few years, the number of men being drafted has declined significantly.
Save for a few exceptions, military service is compulsory for all men between the ages of 18 and 23 years. Those who are engaged in educational or vocational training programs prior to their military assessment are allowed to postpone service until they have completed the programs and can be called upon to perform this national duty at any time thereafter. "

I just tried to look it up and found no definate answers on the length. I found mention of 9 months on one site and several other numbers listed on other sites.
24 months of a person's life spent serving others in some way does not sound ridiculous to me.

I found 9 months in several places, one quoted above.

As I posted earlier I agree 2 years is reasonable, although for non-military service I think spreading the 2 years over a longer period is ok.

mnottertail -> RE: Bring back the draft. (11/13/2009 10:18:45 AM)

yeah, I saw that, and I even found an article wondering if they shouldnt reduce it to six months.

Hm, must have been some major military cuts since my day.

Rhodes85 -> RE: Bring back the draft. (11/13/2009 6:22:05 PM)

Hmm I seem to remember a friend of mine in Germany saying something about two years awhile back but I could be mistaken. Nine months sounds a little odd. You would be barely trained properly in that amount of time. It would make more sense to have say, nine months active duty and a couple years as a reservist with perhaps a couple weeks a year on active duty. Similar to the US national guard.

Irishknight, I have to agree. and it would be far better for the country and for the American people in general for such a system to be implemented. Being Canadian it wouldn't affect me directly but I would also support such a system here.

While it would be good for Canada as well, I dont think the need is as urgent as it is here. The hundreds of Canadians Ive met generally still have a much greater sense of pride and respect for their country and gratitude for the opportunities it affords them than here.

Here the Highway of Heroes would be lined with Code Pink and Westboro Church protestors.
