Cheney FBI interview: 72 times of can't recall

WASHINGTON – Federal prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald famously declared in the Valerie Plame affair that "there is a cloud over the vice president." Last week's release of an FBI interview summary of Dick Cheney's answers in the criminal investigation underscores why Fitzgerald felt that way.

On 72 occasions, according to the 28-page FBI summary, Cheney equivocated to the FBI during his lengthy May 2004 interview, saying he could not be certain in his answers to questions about matters large and small in the Plame controversy.

The Cheney interview reflects a team of prosecutors and FBI agents trying to find out whether the leaks of Plame's CIA identity were orchestrated at the highest level of the White House and carried out by, among others, I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby, Cheney's chief of staff.

Which is better ? I can't recall, or I did not have sex with that woman...

It never occurred to me that that was one of the questions they were asking him.

Let's see...One was a lie about a consensual sexual encounter between two consenting adults. The other was a lie about a breach of security that could have easily gotten an agent serving her country in one of the most dangerous of all duties, covert operations, killed. It also could have compromised any number of investigations and other agents.

I would say it's pretty obvious which is better and which is worse.

servantforuse -> RE: Cheney FBI interview: 72 times of can't recall (11/2/2009 6:13:59 PM)

One was a lie under oath in front of a Federal Grand jury.

I'm still trying desperately to understand why it's even relevant. Are you saying Cheney outed Valerie Plame because Clinton lied about having sex? Are you seriously suggesting that Cheney would do something so completely illogical?

tazzygirl -> RE: Cheney FBI interview: 72 times of can't recall (11/2/2009 6:16:03 PM)

And of course we know that lie was far worse than the breach of national security, not to mention the threat to the life of an agent. [8|]

servantforuse -> RE: Cheney FBI interview: 72 times of can't recall (11/2/2009 6:17:53 PM)

Valerie Plame was not an agent.

tazzygirl -> RE: Cheney FBI interview: 72 times of can't recall (11/2/2009 6:21:37 PM)

LOL

thats all you can say?

Maybe you have no idea what the word "agent " means or at least in the context it's used here.
But she sure as hell didn't serve milk and cookies while overseas.

Brain damage??????????

I might be mistaken here but lieing to Federal investigators is against the law.
I'll check with Martha Stewart and get back to you

luckydawg -> RE: Cheney FBI interview: 72 times of can't recall (11/2/2009 6:29:26 PM)

What lie are you accusing Cheney of telling?

slvemike4u -> RE: Cheney FBI interview: 72 times of can't recall (11/2/2009 6:32:04 PM)

Off the top of my head it would suggest 72 counts of lies of ommision.
Or do you contend "I don't recall" is a boilerplate defence for obstruction?

luckydawg -> RE: Cheney FBI interview: 72 times of can't recall (11/2/2009 6:39:07 PM)

Precedent has been set bipartisanly on that issue, Slvmike. If that becomes an actionable lie, it changes a lot of things.

What doesn't change is that some people still flog the dead horse of Bill Clinton's lying about getting a blowjob to excuse any act, no matter how despicable or treasonous on the part of politicians on their side. I would think that exposing a covert operative in an act of political pettiness was something even the most blindly loyal conservative would see as wrong past the point of defending. I see now I was wrong.

MarsBonfire -> RE: Cheney FBI interview: 72 times of can't recall (11/2/2009 7:13:13 PM)

Not to mention that exposing said operative was done during a time of war. Also, the exposing of said operative was done as an act of cowardly revenge against her husband, who put the lie to the claims of WMD in Iraq as the excuse for taking the country to war, killing 4,500 + American service people, maiming 30,000+ others, and killing almost 250,000 Iraq civilians. (and displacing perhaps as many as 6,000,000 others from their homes, and wrecking the infrastructure of the entire country.)

Yeah, Bill's blowjob was such a crime against God and country in comparison.

Oh, and BTW... Cheany's 72 whoppers today constitute a little federal crime known as "obstruction of justice." (they can't stick him with purgery, seeing as how he wasn't under oath at the time.) Although he'll probably not be charged with such: after all, he shot a friend in the face with a shotgun, and no one lifted a finger to arrest the evil son of a bitch.

UHHHHHHHHH!

I did not have sex with that woman.

Unless you believe outing a CIA agent is equivalent to having your dick sucked.
