Well, Christina Romer, Chair of the White House Council of Economic Advisers,
does appear to have eaten the leftovers of one Janet Reno.

I would rather they just bring back Firefly

Can I get an Amen, people?

I guess V is just another example of teh librul media.

I can give you a "So mote it be," but I am not really an "Amen," kind of gal.  [:)]

They probably couldn't do that after bumping off half of the cast for the movie.

It was only 3 characters!  Book, Mr. Universe, and Wash.  But I would certainly like to see the other 6 seasons that were originally planned for.  *sigh*

So, are we now saying that after all thats been said on the subject, Obama is American, is not Muslim, is not a Socialist, but he is a flesh eating lizard man from outer space?

He might as well be.

It isn't any more ridiculous then all the other nonsense that has been thrown at him in less than a year in office.

Could be.  I know that I have MY spray paint ready!  Especially if they start to dry putting ocean water into space ships!

servantforuse -> RE: 'V' aims at Obamamania (11/4/2009 7:28:11 PM)

If he were a flesh eating lizard from outer space, he would have to get a green card to stay in the white house.

Aylee -> RE: 'V' aims at Obamamania (11/4/2009 7:32:13 PM)

Naw. . . he would be able to use that mind control conversion thing and make them all his pawns!

Thats nothing special Aylee - I've been using mind control conversion techniques to make porn for years.

The original V (IMHO) was clearly about how easy it is for a tyrannical government to come to power by stirring up our fears and prejudices while promising to solve our problems by putting the bad guy (you have to have a bad guy for people to vent their fear and anger on) in his place. My favorite character in the original was the elderly Jewish man who saw what was happening before most others (I particularly liked the scene at the end where he shows the teenagers how to properly vandalize the Visitors propaganda posters).

Exactly Sir! The original had a lot of allusions to Nazis if anything. Even the symbol the visitors used was pretty close to a modified swastika. There were also youth leaders. And it seemed to be pointing more to how easily normal people could end up going along with things like that because of fear or adoring belief in the supposed goals and it also showed how some brave people could stand up for what was right rather than what was easy. I didn't see any connection to presidents past or present in the story line- either in the old one or the new one.

well wishes,
anna

Thanks. The new series (and I am going to give it a chance) seems to be rushing through the whole takeover process. Who knows, maybe they just want to hurry up to the blowing things up part. If that's all the series is going to be, it will be a disapointment. Good drama looks at the really tough issues and puts characters into dilemas, moral as well are physical. Like I said, I'll give it a chance.

I think I can credit the original series (I was seventeen at the time) with having some influence on the general philosophical outlook I have today - particularly the notion that bigotry and hatred are bigotry and hatred - no excuses. The people who slam Chistian fundamentalists for being Chistian fundamentalists are as reprehensible as the Ku Klux Klan for it's slamming of black people for being black or - for that matter - Christian fundamentalists who slam homosexuals for being homosexuals. The rights of all must be resepected or rights are meaningless. One phrase in the original V stands out in particular and sometimes it comes to mind when I see bigotry in action (particularly when it is a form of bigotry not recognized by the larger society): "God damn scientists!"

HatesParisHilton -> RE: 'V' aims at Obamamania (11/4/2009 8:56:03 PM)

okay, Sanity, come clean:

1: unlike some of us, did you watch most of the original series of V, or NOT?  I am betting NOT.

2:  assuming you had seen even 9 EPISODES of the initial series-run in the '80's , you would know how the "Visitors" view the humans of Earth, and for what reason, and to what "purpose".  How do the Visitors view Humans, and would you say that (in any way) it is any different to how cockless "pseudo-conservatives" with major stocks in Tobacco Companies view the "new cigarette market" of Africa?

see, if you'd seen more than 3 episodes of the original V, you'd know these types of questions were coming...

Not to mention that at the time people saw it as a reflection on Reagan.
That would be Alien Nation.

It just wasn't sinister enough to catch on, being all about tolerance and brotherhood and all that other gay shit.

No, Reptilian overlords that want to eat you, that's right up the right wings alley, except when they're the Reptilian overlords that want to eat you, then it would be called "treason".

My wife and I are having the same issue. We watched the premier and were dismayed at how quickly they're pushing the plot. By our reckoning, the plot that happened in the pilot could have easily been stretched out over four hour-long episodes. I know they're only planning a run of 13 episodes, but I don't think they'll win us back as viewers after the Olympic break. Neither of us was old enough to watch the original, but we know vaugely about the plot.

As for the idea that the show is a commentary on Obama? Please. The same plotline has been used in countless stories for decades. Reporters of any ilk are going to try to link any story to the president, beause he's the biggest newsmaker/reader-attractor. As other posters have said, it's nothing more than a headline to get more people to buy the article.
