AP Sources: Dem Health bill to get AARP backing WASHINGTON – In a coup for House Democrats, AARP will endorse sweeping health care overhaul legislation headed for a history-making floor vote, officials told The Associated Press on Wednesday. An endorsement from the seniors' lobby was critical when then-President George W. Bush pushed the Medicare prescription drug benefit through a closely divided Congress in 2003. House Democratic leaders are hoping it will work the same political magic for them as they strive to deliver on President Barack Obama's signature issue. An announcement from the 40-million member group is expected Thursday, said officials with knowledge of the group's decision. That is bizarre. Medicare premiums are going up higher then inflation. The program is also insolvent. What are the fixing again?

Under this bill, medicare funding will be cut by nearly 500 million dollars. 60,000 AARP members have quit that organization in the last 2 months because of AARP's support of the bill.

AARP has not officially supported any bill to date. They havent even come out officially for this version. If people quit, it was for other reasons.

I don't see why they would lose that many members in the last two months for any other reason. Seniors do not like this bill and those running AARP do like it. Their endorsement will not get this thing passed regardless.

Seniors have been scared to not like change. Even politicians realize that.

The one group politicians are afraid of is the seniors. They come out to vote, unlike the under 30 group and minorities that stayed home last night in Virginia and New Jersey. The 55 + voters are a huge voting block.

Among that group are the poor. You wont find those attached to AARP. You do remember them, yes? They were part and parcel of the group that came out in full force to vote in the last presidental election. These are also a group that has limited access to medical care, who have more than likely lost many of their jobs, and may be eager to see this bill passed. Too soon to count any eggs or chickens.

Thats why they're often the ones targetted for all the scare tactics you see. Politicians aren't afraid of them, they're experts at manipulating them. They ought to be afraid of younger voters. You saw what the outcome of the younger voter brought with the presidential election. You also don't see near the scare tactics aimed at younger voters, as you do the seniors. [>:]

Younger voters could care less about mid term elections. If they did care democrats might still be governors in VA and NJ..

Where did the idea that two elections for govenors speaks to the intentions of the nation as a whole? In other words, your pinning your hopes on the outcomes of two state elections. Can you grasp at straws any tighter?

AARP hasnt supported any specific bill but they sent out mailings supporting comprehensive hc reform, including the medicare cuts. I know 8 people who tore up their cards (including me) and sent them back with the mailing and told them that is why they wont be getting any more dues. AARP has turned into an insurance holding company and is supporting comprehensive reform because they cut a deal and will have an inside track toward administration of the government option.
