At least 12 people were killed and 31 others were wounded in a mass shooting incident Thursday at Fort Hood, Texas, military officials said. The shooter was shot to death, they said. More shots were reported later in the afternoon, reported NBC affiliate KCEN-TV of Waco, which said no further details were immediately available. A senior administration official told NBC News analyst Roger Cressey that the suspect who was in custody was an Army major with an Arabic-sounding name. The official said the shootings could have been a criminal matter rather than a terrorism-related attack and that there was no intelligence to suggest a plot against Fort Hood.

Thank you for posting this, Merc.  I hadn't heard and I appreciate the information.

(Good to see you back, btw.)

PS.  I doubt it, Ron.  Ft Hood has been a mobilization command for some units.  My own did part of his pre-deployment training there.

My sons roommates wife is one of the SWAT team members hurt. She was shot in the leg and is unconscious- the roommate is trying to get a flight out there right now. My son just told me about it, I can't believe I saw this upon getting to this section of CM. Thanks for the info...

FR
A U.S. soldier opened fire Thursday at Fort Hood, Texas, killing at least 11 people and wounding 31 others, military officials said. The gunman was shot to death, and two other soldiers were in custody.
NBC News’ Pete Williams reported that U.S. officials identified the gunman as Maj. Malik Nadal Hasan, an Army psychiatrist who had been promoted to major in May. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchinson, R-Texas, said military officials told her that the gunman, who was 39 or 40, was about to be deployed to Iraq and was “upset about it.”

I have a nephew stationed there now. All we can find is that he is/was on base at time shooting started. Complete blackout from then on. We have not heard from him nor anyone on base to let us know if he is okay or not. No one will tell us anything.

I know the feeling.  I'm not too far from there, and when I try to call my relatives I get all circuits are busy....this is frustrating

When will it ever end. Bad enough we have our young men and women being shot at, now we have to worry about being shot by one of our own

For starters, Drk, I'm glad to know that you are ok.  You're name was one of those that hit My mind as soon as I got over the shock factor.

The following are general comments not directed to anyone in particular, but are being written so I can possibly help anyone who has family, friends, or loved ones on that base.  This is the best that I can possibly do to try to assist you from this side of the screen.

What is most likely happening out there right now is containment, control, and accountability.  From the military standpoint, that means physically locating and verifying every soldier under the chain of command.  People on leave won't necessarily be recalled, but minimally, they will have to be recognized by the unit that they are alive.  Even with this happening in the middle of the day, that's not as easy as it sounds.

On the 'all circuits are busy' thing, you can expect that for a while.  Speaking as a past call center operator, I can tell you that you have no idea of the pandemonium that center is experiencing right now.  (I worked Columbine.  I know.)

Don't count on your loved one's cell phone.  Chances are limited to what availability they are permitted  to even have it turned on if they are on the base.  Depending on how quickly containment happens, they may be on silence conditions.

YOUR BEST SOURCE OF INFORMATION IS THE AMERICAN RED CROSS!  I can't stress that enough to you.  While what they can tell you is limited by phone, they are the best resource to either confirm or deny that your loved one was or was not injured.  That's all they can do.  They will not tell you the extent of injuries.

My heart does out to the families of those who have been killed or injured.

Good news for us...the roommates wife is stabilized and will be ok- besides her gunshot wound that is. The roommate will be flying out there tomorrow morning, right now is filling out paperwork for leave. I hope to heck that the rest of you get some news soon...

The Washington Post is reporting that the Fort Hood gunman is alive and in custody.

slutslave4u -> RE: Ft Hood Shooting - 12 Dead 31 wounded (11/5/2009 7:53:00 PM)

We FINALLY have word, my nephew is okay, was not far from it all but is okay....he was only just now, several hours later, able to contact us after all that took place.

The one that did the shooting actually lived right across the street from my nephew off base too.

Lemme guess, the gunman is a Presbyterian, right?
