gift4mistress -> Our possible collapse... (11/6/2009 9:50:54 PM)

I think this is a bi-partisan source.

http://www.opencongress.org/battle_royale/senators?commit=Search&order=desc&page=6&q=&sort=bookmark_count_1&timeframe=AllTime

There are only 6 senators with a 50% or above approval rating.

3 Democrat 2 republicans, 1 Independent

Ron Paul (the great one) is the ONLY CONGRESSPERSON WITH A 90% plus approval rating.

Majority of the Congressmen were below 50 percent approval rating with maybe 20 or 30 in the 50% or above approval rating.

Most of the Representatives with a 60% or higher approval rating were republican with a few democrats. Please keep in mind that the Republican party has horrible approval ratings, so I find this to be interesting. http://www.gallup.com/poll/123011/Parties-Congress-Near-Record-Low-Approval.aspx

Nancy Pelosi has a 10 percent approval rating. [:-]

The question I have is how much more can the system take before it all collapses. I can't see this system staying in tact too much longer. And yes, it is very possible that I'm over exaggerating our problems or underestimating our countries resiliency. However, history has shown many nations to fail when going down the same path this one is heading (i.e Rome, Greek, Soviet Union, France - French Revolution/Napoleon, Great Britain, and etc...).

In my opinion, these numbers show two failing parties that have done nothing but add to the deficit of problems to this nation. Also as  a reminder, our economic and political woos are only a percentage of the problems in this nation; we should also consider; drugs, poverty, eduction, health care, wars, international problems, possibility of cyber warfare, and the list goes on and on.

Personally, I see a possible Revolution that will come in to play, and it will be more like the French Revolution than anything else. But, that is of course only speculation and a personal opinion at best.

What do you think?

It can take a lot. With all of its problems, this is still the greatest Country the world has ever seen, and always will be. When you see people trying to flee America to Europe, Russia or the Middle East, let me know. They are all still trying to get here..

Can you please stay on topic. If you hate X people then start a different thread on that topic. Thanks!

Near as I can tell these rankings are based on the sites users. That has absolutely nothing to do with actual popularity of politicians.

For instance the site ranks Dick Durbin as having only a 39% approval rate. He is in actuality an enormously popular senator in Illinois and easily won relection in 2008 by just under 40 points.

willbeurdaddy -> RE: Our possible collapse... (11/7/2009 12:30:47 AM)

violent revolution is a ridiculous fantasy. There may be violence, but not to overthrow the government. Approval ratings are very deceiving...everyone disapproves of the other guys representative, but most still support their own. Thats why there are only incremental changes in the composition of the houses.

You don't find it ill-mannered for the rest of the world to constantly hear our chest-thumping patriotic nonsense?

Think about it.  If you had a friend who was constantly telling you he was superior in every way to you how long would he remain your friend?

I think off with their heads.

Let their blood flow in the streets.

Let the Conservative Revolution begin!!!!!!!!!!

There are only 6 senators with a 50% or above approval rating. <------In thier states?

3 Democrat 2 republicans, 1 Independent

Ron Paul (the great one) is the ONLY CONGRESSPERSON WITH A 90% plus approval rating.<-------------Once again...in his district or nationwide?

Majority of the Congressmen were below 50 percent approval rating with maybe 20 or 30 in the 50% or above approval rating.<--------irrelevent once again...they are elected withing thier own districts not by the country

[:-]<------only needs to be elected in her district....the nation doesn't count when she only Reps her N. Calif. District

The question I have is how much more can the system take before it all collapses. I can't see this system staying in tact too much longer. And yes, it is very possible that I'm over exaggerating our problems or underestimating our countries resiliency. However, history has shown many nations to fail when going down the same path this one is heading (i.e Rome, Greek, Soviet Union, France - French Revolution/Napoleon, Great Britain, and etc...).<-----------It will not in my lifetime nor yours and you appear to be much younger than me....we have the chacne to revolt once every 2 or 4 years...

<-------HIGHLY doubtful....rumours of our death as a nation have been prophesied for years....the system will correct itself as it always has....the beauty of a Democracy

What do you think?

You give way too much credit to nationwide approval ratings to local election issues.....It is rarely "My Congress person sucks"...it'all of the rest of them....look at the number of years the average Congress person serves...10 years for House Reps and over 12 for the Senate....

Silence8 -> RE: Our possible collapse... (11/7/2009 5:02:03 AM)

A lot of people thought that electing Barack Obama was a revolution of sorts. It wasn't. The fervor with which people dedicated themselves, especially on the grassroots level, seems somewhat promising, though.

Other sources of revolutionary fervor are coming from the green movement, gays, minorities, and immigrant populations...

Hierodule -> RE: Our possible collapse... (11/7/2009 5:31:14 AM)

Ummmmm the way our "Democracy" works officals only need approval from their districts.  You get to chose your reps and I get to chose mine. If you don't like who I chose, well, sorry 'bout your bad luck.

I am from CA. I love northern CA especialy. You think Nancy Pelosi is bad???Let me tell you, there isn't a damn thing that they approve of up in NoCal that would get over a 10% approval rating across the rest of the nation, trust me. Its a freaky-deaky place and I am glad they get to chose their own leaders. US out of Humbolt County! You will get my bong when you pry it from my cold dead hands!!!

~FR~

Among the problems with this model is that it ignores moderates, and ignores that most people are those moderates.

Conservatives see the world as their strict views or liberals--even moderate Republicans are "rhinos," and all Democrats, even the more conservative ones (some of which are more conservative than moderate Republicans). This contributes to a false dichotomy.

Since Conservatives are doing much of the yelling, people mistakenly perceive their views as the last vestige against a Conservative takeover, and yell back as if the world were only them and Conservatives--again overlooking the vast majority of moderates.

Polls then set out to "prove" whether the Conservatives or their staunch opponents are correct or popular or winning, and that false premise means the results overlook reality--the large group of moderates.

Truthfully, someone should form The Moderate Party. It would sweep the nation.

LOL, true. I like the French Canadians though.
The main reason in my opinion that many of these pols are unpopular though is because they stopped listening to their *constituents* and started listening to *lobbyists.*
Lobbyists = graft!
I saw Sen. Boxer on the News the other day and I couldn't figure out what she was trying to say. It was like she had a few too many glasses of pinot greiggio. (sp)
And Nancy Pelosi is a total disaster by any measure. Hopefully the good people of California in whatever congressional district she represents will have mercy on the rest of the country and put her out into the "D.P.S." (The dreaded private sector) next fall.
All politicians should be constantly aware that they are in office to reflect and represent the wishes of "THE PEOPLE" not lobbyists, big business or special interests!
If they vote the way that their constituents tell them to vote they'll never have to worry about "popularity".

2 years.   We have about 2 years of reasonably good times left before things take a bad turn downward.

If he is superior and I benefit from his superiority...forever.
