It can take a lot. With all of its problems, this is still the greatest Country the world has ever seen, and always will be. When you see people trying to flee America to Europe, Russia or the Middle East, let me know. They are all still trying to get here..

You have some red, white, and blue shit on your lip... would you like a moist towelette? But congratulations, you are exactly why the world hates Americans and spits on your food when you take exotic trips to.... PARIS!

If being proud of your country gets you hated, then BRING ON THE HATE!.....i am PROUD of my country, if anyone wants to hate because of that, so be it.

Edited to add: BECAUSE this is a free country, Anyone that thinks its really that awful here is FREE to LEAVE!...... So

My pride in the US wavered during the Bush years, I do admit that... but then, his administration WAS trying to turn the US into a de facto dictatorship...

Now that we're coming back to remembering what habeus corpus is all about, and that we have this thing called the "US Judicial System", I think we're back onto the road to recovery. (Provided we don't get another administration [literally] from hell like we did with Bush Cheany.) Now all we have to do is, first, completely dismantle the GOP, and rebuild a second US party that is firmly centrist, and second, block the influence of corperation to the US government and have it controlled by "we the people" again, and we'll be full steam ahead on the US.

Luckily, the GOP itself is helping us with the first part. As they become more and more extremist, they lose public support, and will soon fade into the mist of history.

This here is America and those goddamn commie pinkos that criticize America need to pack up their things and move off to the Soviet Union or France.

Is France part of the Soviet Union?

Ummm I think there is a difference between being proud of your country and claiming it is better than every other country in the world. I was also poking fun at the style of the "exotic trip to... PARIS" post. I thought it was funny.

I can't afford to go to paris for a week let alone move there. But I would love the chance to see what living in another country is like.  I think its good to immerse yourself in other cultures. I personally have never lived in a foreign country. I never said it was awful here. However, it would be really hard for me to claim that America is the best nation in the world because I have nothing to compare it to. It is the only place I have ever lived.  How many countries have you been a citizen of ? Wouldn't you have to go  to go to another nation and experience what it is like to live there in order to claim your nation is the best? I am totally open to new experiences and would jump at the chance to live somewhere new and (to me) exotic.

Sorry if I offended your deep patriotism. I really don't see why it was neccessary to link to my profile since anyone who wants to check me out can click my profile pic. But hey what ever floats your boat.

It has always amused me that those that trumpet the loudest the freedoms and greatness of America or always inviting other citizens(those who might not wear their patriotism on their sleeves) to up and exercise their freedom by leaving
Is America free enough to allow disenting citizens to stay?

Come on Mike.

You know I can't let this rest after the Series.

It's just too funny how much it pisses you off.

I'm still working on the "Why I hate the Yankees" thread.

That was something that really bothered me: this assumption that patriotism and mindless devotion to whatever incompetent halfwit happens to be running the country are the same thing. No, they're not. The State wasn't the chimp, and it isn't Obama: anybody daft enough to think otherwise probably shouldn't be talking about politics in the first place, to tell the truth.

It would be interesting to hear you elaborate.

What are you basing that on?

Military strength, economic strength, political philosophy, moral philosophy, philanthropy, or any number of other possible reasons we can compare ourselves to other countries.

In many ways America IS great.   Can we be improved?  You bet.   Does this make other places not great?  Nope.   Home is where you make it.

I dread that we may have squandered our blessings on foolishness.

As fatalistic as I am- America is unique in shaking of the monetarist system- our constitution spells it out.  We are one of the few countries that does.

So- ok- WE have a crises.  What do we do with it?

I have not given up on ALL of humanity.  America may still rise to the occasion.   If others do - then great.  We need to beat this paper economy as it is devouring the real economy and with that will demise of peoples livelihood.

But make no mistake- no one "owes us".    We do however have to rise to the occasion and demonstrate to the world that we the PEOPLE still matter-

God help us.   It is not impossible and there will be blood.   But I do think America is unique in many ways toward this end.

Let the people be heard!

Among the problems with this model is that it ignores moderates, and ignores that most people are those moderates.

Conservatives see the world as their strict views or liberals--even moderate Republicans are "rhinos," and all Democrats, even the more conservative ones (some of which are more conservative than moderate Republicans). This contributes to a false dichotomy.

Trouble is, that goes both ways.  I've had friends who accused me of being uber-Conservative due to not being liberal enough in their opinion.  I used to consider myself more on the conservative end of moderate, but was kinda roughly disabused of that notion about 2 years ago when I found myself right about dead center on the political compass tests.  Apparently I'm too "Free Market where possible" to be on the left, and too "People can be too corrupt and destructive if left unpoliced" to fit in on the right.

Heh, yah.  A close friend of mine in Australia was trying to buy a house...she says the housing market there is skyrocketing with the number of Americans moving there driving demand up.

She posted that we need to get some good news in the US asap so that she can afford a house lol.
