House narrowly passes landmark health care bill

In a victory for President Barack Obama, the Democratic-controlled House narrowly passed landmark health care legislation Saturday night to expand coverage to tens of millions who lack it and place tough new restrictions on the insurance industry. Republican opposition was nearly unanimous.

The 220-215 vote cleared the way for the Senate to begin debate on the issue that has come to overshadow all others in Congress.

A hundred years and still only passed by five votes. Not much of a victory, I'm afraid. I don't see any way right now that it ever gets through the Senate, in any meaningful form.

I'm not so sure...I believe the Democrats see the writing on the wall...They now realize they will not have the super majority after the upcoming mid-term elections… if they can even maintain a majority. It is now or never for healthcare. I think they get it done for just this reason.

If the Democrats pass meaningful health care reform, they may be pleasantly surprised on the mid term election results.  The republican attack on AARP seemed to piss off of a lot of oldsters up here who promptly told the "republicans" here to get a life; that they know politics is a contact sport and are getting their wheel chairs equipped with spears for the upcoming jousts.  I was surprised at the animosity the AARP rank and file expressed against the republicans.  The only person the Press interviewed who was against AARP's actions was Rep.Ahlers who voted 100% for Bush's proposals and a couple of AARP's members told him to kiss their bed pans.

And, every AARP member stressed that "we vote."

They were the among those asking for it to be read. Such a quaint concept in the age of stone tablets, huh?

Ah. I just didn't realize you knew all these people--including those who vowed to oppose it before it was even conceived or written.

Thanks.

Moot point anyway. We'll see what happens in the Senate.

I hate to burst your bubble, but the public option is unconstitutional and conservatives may decide to defeat this in the courts. At the very least they can privatize it in the future.

"The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people."

This means that 90% of the laws and agencies Congress has passed and created are unconstitutional. You can't create something that is unconstitutional to create in the first place then claim it falls under the Interstate Commerce Clause after you created it.

I for one believe that the only people who deserve assistance from the government are those who are unemployed, chronically ill, handicapped, and senior citizens. Everyone else must be forced to live within their means. This means you must pay for your own healthcare, not buy a new car with the money you should have used for healthcare.

This is a very dangerous path the house has decided to travel, and it will result in complete collapse of our economy. When you start handing out freebies, everyone gets in line for more. There's no possible way we can have half the population on social security while the other 25% are on some kind of government assistance. We can't afford that.

Let us know when a court actually decides that.

Trouble is, over two centuries of court decisions indicate the opposite.

However, I will sue you if you unconstitutionally discriminate for or against me.  We all are going to be in Court for quite some time and he who has to go to court has already lost.

I guess you can't please anybody.

The legislation would require most Americans to carry insurance and provide federal subsidies to those who otherwise could not afford it. Large companies would have to offer coverage to their employees. Both consumers and companies would be slapped with penalties if they defied the government's mandates.

quote:

At its core, the measure would create a federally regulated marketplace where consumers could shop for coverage. In the bill's most controversial provision, the government would sell insurance, although the Congressional Budget Office forecasts that premiums for it would be more expensive than for policies sold by private firms.

quote:

To pay for the expansion of coverage, the bill cuts Medicare's projected spending by more than $400 billion over a decade. It also imposes a tax surcharge of 5.4 percent on income over $500,000 in the case of individuals and $1 million for families.

quote:

The bill was estimated to reduce federal deficits by about $104 billion over a decade, although it lacked two of the key cost-cutting provisions under consideration in the Senate, and its longer-term impact on government red ink was far from clear.

I really think thats all people wanted in the beginning.  Was affordable health care.  Not FREE health care.  Gov't selling insurance (whether it is initially higher than a private insurance) will still keep the competition as the gov't will subsidize and people will move to whats more rational and reasonable "if" the insurance companies play by the rules (its all up to them, according to the link Sanity outlined, from the link tazzy posted).

Eliminating medicare waste (which isn't the same thing as cutting benefits, glad thats finally being rationally realized, too) will indeed help pay for it all.

That the bill is projected to reduce some of the deficit is a good thing.  I doubt seriously, anyone with good sense expected health reform to put all our economic woes back in balance.

I'm hopeful.

Insurance industry practices such as denying coverage on the basis of pre-existing medical conditions would be banned, and insurers would no longer be able to charge higher premiums on the basis of gender or medical history. In a further slap, the industry would lose its exemption from federal antitrust restrictions on price gouging, bid rigging and market allocation.

quote:

The nation's drug companies generally support health care overhaul. And while the powerful insurance industry opposed the legislation, it did so quietly, and the result was that Republicans could not count on the type of advertising campaign that might have peeled away skittish Democrats in swing districts.

quote:

A Republican alternative was rejected on a near party line vote of 258-176.

It relied heavily on loosening regulations on private insurers to reduce costs for those who currently have insurance, in some cases by as much as 10 percent. But congressional budget analysts said the plan would make no dent in the ranks of the uninsured, an assessment that highlighted the difference in priorities between the two political parties.

Your source, Sanity. Not sure what you were pointing out. But i figured if we were gonna show parts, we may as well show the rest.

Here is what they dont want told. Insurance permiums, for the most part, arent going up in the private and work place sector. Benefits are dropping, co-payments are inching upwards, and deductibles are sky rocketing. So, yeah, this may cost a bit more for premiums initially... in the long run, it will cost less, providers will get paid, and people will have access to health care across the board.

Such a scandalous idea.

But we can afford the cost of two wars that have totaled more in 8 years than what the health care bill will in ten?

I haven't noticed you complaining that our economy will collapse because of the senseless misadventure in Iraq.

By the way, "There's no possible way we can have half the population on social security while the other 25% are on some kind of government assistance.", invest in a calculator.
