TheHeretic -> President Obama - The best and worst of the year (11/8/2009 8:09:43 AM)

Here's an interesting article from Politico, listing the high and low points of President Obama's first year in office.

http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1109/29149.html

Three page article.  If there was a 'single page' button, I didn't see it.

thornhappy -> RE: President Obama - The best and worst of the year (11/8/2009 8:34:15 AM)

...but...but...but...

He hasn't been in office for a year yet.

TheHeretic -> RE: President Obama - The best and worst of the year (11/8/2009 8:50:44 AM)

You are absolutely right, Thorns, but the media do love to get ahead of themselves.  On the other hand, he wasn't flipping burgers in the 10 weeks between winning the election and taking the oath.

Interesting article. I found it, dare I say, fair and balanced. [:)]

Thanks for posting, Rich.

~FR~

I'd say this is a pretty accurate assessment. I have long thought that Obama has had some very good moments and some great disappointments. I think it would be as much a mistake to concentrate only on the former and forget the latter as it would be to do the reverse.

The problem is that there seems to be little objective examination of Obam's administration. This is a fine example of what such an examination can tell us.

I liked the way they handled going after Fox

Well, like it or hate it, going after Fox was an act of politics rather than policy. Fox could rename itself the "Fuck Obama" network and there isn't much the government can or should be able to do about it. It was a PR move to play to his base. In terms of his administration, I think it will pretty much be meaningless either way by '12.

Raiikun -> RE: President Obama - The best and worst of the year (11/8/2009 11:23:56 AM)

There are pros on that list that baffle me.  (I still think a President being able to fire a CEO is just plain wrong for one).

TheHeretic -> RE: President Obama - The best and worst of the year (11/8/2009 11:26:43 AM)

Forget renaming themselves, Spinner.  Fox has everthing they need in place to launch an evening network newscast anytime they feel like it, and everybody has already seen every episode of The Simpsons four times anyway.

7. Firing GM CEO Rick Waggoner

To satisfy the pitchfork brigade, Obama needed to show that there are consequences for accepting taxpayer bailouts, and Waggoner was the perfect candidate to shoulder the blame. Obama probably wishes he had forced a few more CEOs to walk the plank, to counter a public perception that failed bankers got off scot-free.

When a corporation comes to the Government asking for money to bail out his company because of mistakes that company made, then, yes, he should be held responsible.

I feel he didnt fire enough CEO's.

How do you feel about government bailing out a bankrupt company?

If they accepted the bailout they need to accept the consequences.

(I have to stop commenting  before I read the next posts.  Tazzy said the same thing.  But I guess it bears repeating.)

Yeah Rich ...the war on Fox actually making both lists was brilliant...and hit the nail on the head....Fox haters loved it.....while those that hang on Fox's every word had each and every one of their Obamamania fears validated.
My opinion...it wasn't worth it,the Administration would have been better served keeping their mouths shut on this one.

willbeurdaddy -> RE: President Obama - The best and worst of the year (11/8/2009 12:39:43 PM)

1. Letting Congress take the lead on health care. Great CYA move. Will most likely still lead to a compromise bill that nobody is happy with, so he avoids the blame.
2. Hillary Great CYA move. Defuse her opposition. Bad move for the US. Biden is an idiot, and she is blundering her way around the world.
3. Stimulus Bill Disaster in the making
4. Sotomayor Great CYA move. Nominate a flaming liberal that is both a woman and a minority, Defuse the opposition.
5. Taking out the pirates. No brainer, what took so long.
6. Huntsman Chinese Ambassador whoopee
7. Firing Waggoner See 3.
8. Cairo speech. An embarassment to the US, subjected him to ridicule by our enemies and allies.
9. Wooing the media. Runs the risk of over exposure.
10. War on Fox Likely to backfire.

So of his 10 best the only 2 that were actually positive were a no brainer and a BFD. The rest just CYA or stupidity. Lots for Dems to celebrate there.

1. Gates dumb move by a political hack.
2. 8% unemployment. dumb statement by an economic moron.
3. Olympics bid. BFD, replace this with not going to the Berlin Wall anniversary. His priorities are so fucked up its unreal.
4. Everywhere all the time See 9 above. Stupid for essentially the same issue to be a "best" and a "worst"
5. McChrystal. Solidifies his image as an indecisive, inexperienced CIC, and willing to risk the lives of the soldiers there to appease the radical left.
6. No earmarks. A soundbite that will be heard endlessly in 2012.
7. Appointments. Dumb appointments by a political hack.
8. Gitmo. A soundbite that will be heard endlessly in 2012, highlighting his willingness to criticize his opponents and then learn that they were right all along.
9. Snubbing the Dalai Lama. BFD.
10. War on Fox. See 4 above.

One of the worst first years in Presidential history.

I wondered how long it would take one of the minions to bring up Dubya to defend Obama.

And I was wondering how long it would take some reactionary to fall back on the right wing screaming point that anyone who a) doesn't consider Obama to be the antichrist b) Remembers what we came from last time the conservatives placed a chief executive or c) considers a comparison between this administration and past administrations a valid topic is a brainwashed, unthinking, sycophantic "minion".

Seems like we both got our questions answered, didn't we?

I think that was equally bad of a mistake.

And Tazzy's response frankly scares the shit outta me.

(Amusingly, the car company that's recovering the best by far, is the one that didn't take any money from the government and let it get it's claws into it.)

tazzygirl -> RE: President Obama - The best and worst of the year (11/8/2009 3:16:20 PM)

Because that company didnt need it. Funny how they showed up in private jets to ask for money, then discovered when strings were attached, the one had enough common sense to back out. Strength in numbers is what they thought. If all three were going under, the government would surely have to give in, wont they? Didnt work that way. The ones that were poorly run went under. I feel no pity for them. I wished the banks had to go through the same thing.

IF the private sector wishes to remain private, then quit begging the government for money.

ITS just that simple.

And i scare you? LOL

Since when did we reward failure with more money?

slvemike4u -> RE: President Obama - The best and worst of the year (11/8/2009 3:22:41 PM)

Oh Oh Tazzy.....now we are going to have a post from Merc...I really wish you hadn't done that.
