Brain -> Bill Maher discusses the new documentary 'Jesus Camp' on Real Time. (11/9/2009 1:12:04 PM)

Just a nice friendly conversation and chat. Of course, for those who don't know me, I am a serious atheist.

Bill Maher on Jesus Camp

Brain, this isn't new...the documentary came out in 2006,very disturbing, very scary...and proof positive that no religion has a monopoly on fanaticism nor quite frankly stupidity.Home grown fanatics scare me as much if not more, than middle eastern fanatics.
The cardboard cut-out of George Bush is about the only humour to be found in this sad story

It may just be me, because of my beliefs, or lack thereof, but was most of the conversation rational except for the bible-thumper?

slvemike4u -> RE: Bill Maher discusses the new documentary 'Jesus Camp' on Real Time. (11/9/2009 2:03:56 PM)

Yeah Ron no problem at all when we have our children prostrating themselves before a lifesize cardboard cutout of our first born again president....while swearing to become soldiers for Jesus......but sing a song during black history month celebrating the first African American President.......and lo and behold they are brainwashing and indoctrinating the children.
The hypocrisy is telling.......

What conversation are you referring to Rule...the one that took place amongst the panel on the Maher show......or any of the conversations contained within the documentary....because near  as I can tell there was nothing rational going on at that camp.
As an aside,I'm curious Brain how could you have watched a Bill Maher episode an not caught that it was a three y/o repeat.....the content is way too topical to miss.

rulemylife -> RE: Bill Maher discusses the new documentary 'Jesus Camp' on Real Time. (11/9/2009 2:11:33 PM)

Oh no, now you started it.

Soon we'll be inundated with how the evil Obama is starting his evil socialist/communist agenda by training the children first.

Uh-oh!

Now we are going to have a religious argument.

May Jesus save us.

That's exactly the truth though.

And it is very difficult to break free of what you have been taught your whole life, even when you start questioning it.

Not to in any way jump on the right wing bandwagon, Mike, but this one I have to disagree with you. A church is, by definition, a partisan organization, designed to instill a particular point of view. A school is a place where information, not opinion, is to be fostered. So, while I still think the whole "Obama song" was a tempest in a teapot, and I think that the churches involved in political indoctrination should be stripped of their tax free status, I can't see equating the two. To do so raises the credibility of the church to the level we hope to keep in our schools.

slvemike4u -> RE: Bill Maher discusses the new documentary 'Jesus Camp' on Real Time. (11/9/2009 2:29:23 PM)

Well Spinner we are of course comparing apples and oranges here...on the one hand we are discussing some very young children singing a simple song celebrating our first black President(during black history month I might add) and on the other hand kids of a like age declaring themselves soldiers for Jesus.
Now your right a church is a partisan organization...but what was documented here verged right up against child abuse(in my worth absolutely nothing non legal opinion)...this wasn't bible study as you and I remember it(well not as I remember it anyway) this was hard core brainwashing...as scary in its own way as films of any madrass(sp) in the middle east.
What happened in that school in Jersey was no more indoctrinating than singing the National Anthem was when I was a kid
A small disclaimer here before I get flamed...all of the preceding was merely my opinion .....no more no less.

That was confusing.

"A church is, by definition, a partisan organization, designed to instill a particular point of view."

"A school is a place where information, not opinion, is to be fostered."

So how do you define a church-sponsored school?

In the case of this particular "camp"......child abuse!

Well I am going to assume Lucy is referring to the actual documentary as opposed to the Maher discussion(some people may not like him...but I doubt he makes too many people violently ill)so my question would be to you Rule...are you fucking kidding me....its okay with you when little children declare themselves soldiers for Jesus....when supposed adults tell children they must be prepared to die for Jesus.....if the answers to those questions are yes....than you should have no problem with the teaching of radical Islam...because that is the moral equivalent...whether or not you recognise it.Sick no matter the diety one is praying to......I have no problem with faith...I do have lots of problems with faith being taken to the extreme of fanaticism...and thats what was going on.
