Ja, I already knew that, and I know about 'our other little problem' with it too.

you could prolly also say per mille (pronounced per mill) it means for every thousand and pro mille would be acceptable also, I should think.

:)

I think you mean "per mille", not promill. The "‰" or "per mille" sign means "per thousand".

Here's a web page that hopefully gives you way more info than you need to know about that sign: http://www.fileformat.info/info/unicode/char/2030/index.htm

As it refers to salinity, I always called it parts per thousand as in 35 PPT or 3.5% (average salinity of the world's oceans)

While looking for the FileFormat site, I did find an entry for "promill" in Google Books. It was found in an old Icelandic-English translation dictionary, to which the definition of "promill" in Icelandic was "swearing."

Since 0.5 of "swearing" didn't make much sense to me (I mean, how can someone only fractionally swear?), I kept searching.

:)

Per thousands is what I'm used to hearing. Didn't know there was a word meaning that, but I think if I said it nobody else would understand.

velleity comes immediately to mind. miscable, synecdoche, interalia......

Because someone doesn't understand Die Ring Des Neibelungen doesn't mean you shouldn't play it.

It would depend upon what terminology is expected by your audience. As others have pointed out, some businesses or professions use the term "per thousand" when writing and speaking, so if you're trying to communicate something pertinent to them, you'd want to use "per thousand."

In other professions or businesses, "per mille" is the expected vocabulary, so you'll want to write or speak to that specific audience using "per mille."

When trying to communicate the idea of numbers or specific information, it's best to find out how the audience speaks and use their language when presenting your stuff.

Now, to confuse you even further...

If you are writing an academic paper for peer review or publishing, you'll want to use whatever language or vocabulary is suggested in the publisher's style guide (set of rules governing the use of vocabulary, language, punctuation, and formatting). In this case, the audience will be those approving your writing for some review or publishing purpose, and they're expecting you to write according to the rules in the style guide, even if those rules are inconsistent with another profession's or business's expectations.

It's all very confusing... this idea of communication.
