I just watched some of the movie Jesus Camp and as a Christian I have to say it is embarassing. It is not the way I feel. I think they are brain washing those poor kids. It is not acceptable. Please dont everyone think we are all like that. I appologize for those misguided people in Missouri. Besides, that church wasnt scriptual as it had a female pastor and thats not acceptable.

And I suppose, with your premise, followers of christ should come along and apologise for you and those that are like you who claim to be christian and have a misguided stance on females not being in positions of authority within the church?  Jesus treated women with dignity and respect.  You just exhibited neither.
Jesus would be appalled by your misogyny.

Sadly he's not just making up that position, it comes from the Bible:

"women should remain silent in the churches. They are not allowed to speak, but must be in submission, as the Law says." (1 Corinthians 14:34 NIV)

Isn't indoctrinating the next generation part of every denomination of Christianity?

There are certain religions that follow that line of thinking based on the book and older ways of living. Call it misogyny if you like but in this day and age those women in those churches are making choices and belief decisions also.

K GotSteel made my point for me.

He's definitely not making it up.

There are many other verses that say the same.

Which then draws the question of why so many regard this outdated book as some holy manuscript to base their lives on.

Maybe it has something to do with the "outdated" notion of 'doing unto others as you would have them do unto you,' or perhaps the 'love your neighbor' stuff?

Maybe they just like the happy ending?

Hey...I'm from Missouri...go figure

One of the biggest mistakes some religious people make is to not realize most religious text is a guide for a way to live and a better life. The word is often written as parables to inspire and teach…not to be taken from context and followed word for word.

I think most reasonable people feel God around them but understand men wrote religious text with a context of a different time.

Which is fine.

If you regard it as a philosophical document with value on how we should live our lives, rather than the word of God handed down from the guy in the clouds.

That's when the problems start.

Some?

Come on.

There are many, many faiths that interpret the Bible literally.

kdsub -> RE: Jesus Camp (11/11/2009 9:45:56 PM)

Support that with facts not feelings...sorta hard for both of us...so again it comes down to our beliefs of the unknowable truths

Facts?

Do you really want me to go there?

I can give you facts all day long on fundamentalists who believe the Bible literally as the word of God and believe in all types of nonsense from that literal interpretation.

kasumi -> RE: Jesus Camp (11/11/2009 10:22:13 PM)

The trouble with Christianity, is that modern Christian churches generally pick and choose which of the rules their going to go by. When "Jesus came", didn't he say that all the old laws are pretty much nul and void?

Even still, some are still upheld while others aren't.

And there are so many contradictions in that book that I can never take it seriously.

Yeah, go there. What you said was:

You can start listing those "many many faiths" any time you like.

rulemylife -> RE: Jesus Camp (11/11/2009 10:26:24 PM)

Really?

Is this not common knowledge that there are many churches with literal interpretations of the Bible?

Ok, standby.

Excuse me, you said "many many faiths". Suck it up, kiddo. Aside from some nominally Christian congregations, what other faiths interpret the Bible literally?

Or did you mis-speak? Um?

K.

Many if not most Southern Baptists are biblical literalists. So are many Pentecostal and Charismatic churches. To differing degrees virtually all evangelical churches hold biblical literalist or innerant beliefs.

Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints ...

Know Your Christians - Ted Rose - Slate Magazine

Fundamentalist
is a term used to describe American conservative Protestants, often Baptists. It is not pejorative. Fundamentalists have three defining attributes:

a. Belief in the inerrancy of the Bible. The Bible is literally true. If it states that God created the world in six days, a fundamentalist believes it was six 24-hour days.

b. Faith in charismatic leaders. A fundamentalist looks to charismatic preachers such as Jerry Falwell or Pat Robertson to interpret the Scripture and provide guidance for the community. More mainstream Protestant denominations place less emphasis on the power of individual ministers.

c. The nation-state as a reflection of God. Fundamentalists are very concerned about civil society. They are encouraged to be politically active and work to improve the moral quality of the nation and its political leaders.

I can literally (literally, get it?  [sm=rofl.gif]) keep providing examples all night long if these don't suffice.

Umm... you might want to change that to "most reasonable religious people feel God around them but...". [;)]
