MzMia -> Thoughts on President Obama's Job Summit? (11/12/2009 8:27:08 PM)

I was glad to hear that President Obama will be holding a big job summit next month.
I think that is a wonderful way to end 2009.
I am wondering how the President plans to spur job growth without using any of the
remaining stimulus money.
Isn't that one of the reasons that we have the stimulus money?
I am eagerly awaiting coverage of the job summit.
Any thoughts from our resident "brains" on what to expect from the upcoming job summit?

Press releases?  Talking points?  Maybe a new czar?

Maybe Obama will agree to a temporary cease fire in his war on business until the economy improves a little bit?

I don't really expect it, but I can hope.

While I don't believe that Ronald Reagan had much to do with our current financial problems, I don't think it's fair to say that if only John McCain had been elected things would have been different. McCain admitted that he "knew nothing about economics" (for which, actually, I salute him) but his official (and later unofficial) economic advisor during the campaign was Phil Gramm, who was the primary author of the Financial Services Modernization Act of 1999 - which laid a lot of the groundwork for the problems we have.

Of course, Barack Obama's economic advisor was Robert Rubin, who's probably equally to blame for creating the framework that led to the total fiscal meltdown of the market and his current economic team is mostly made up of Robert Rubin's proteges.

Part of what I find so appalling is that the last election pretty much offered no difference in fiscal or economic policy - which is pretty scary when you consider the huge difference in the backgrounds, views, beliefs and histories of the two candidates.

As regards the OP - unless the economic team working for the current administration changes drastically, I don't expect you're going to see any marked difference in policy at all. The response I've come to expect will be something along the lines of "the reason why things haven't recovered is not because we need to change our policies or our tactics, but because we didn't do them enough and if only we do the same things, only a LOT MORE SO, things will get better". I wouldn't hold my breath for any serious change in the near future.

I thought the point of this big job summit was too stimulate job growth.
I would think there must be some proposed changes, if not what would be the point
of having this job summit?

My thoughts on the job summit? It's useless political posturing. To stimulate job growth all we need do is cut taxes.

After he ignored most of the ideas presented at his health care summit earlier this year, I don't hold much hope that he'll do much better with this employment summit.

That's been very throroughly disproven. The Laffer curve has no connection to reality.

What ideas were those?

Notice that not a single liberal offered a single idea to help stimulate job creation. There is a reason for that.

Notice that the only idea the conservatives have offered is one that has been proven not to work.

Well, what theory is rooted in reality?

When you cut people's taxes they have more money (what was their money to begin with). When people have more money they spend more money (sure, some of it is saved but saved money is spent eventually). When people spend more money the demand for products and services goes up. When the demand for products and services goes up jobs are created (existing businesses expand and new businesses are created) to meet the demand. Voila! More Jobs (and incidently, more taxpayers).

Straight forward logic and common sense which works everytime it's tried.

servantforuse -> RE: Thoughts on President Obama's Job Summit? (11/13/2009 5:06:24 AM)

Labor unions and non-profit groups will be the main focus of this summit. Obama's agenda against business groups will continue and this job summit will be a waste of time. Unions do not create jobs.
