Alphascendant -> It's time to wake up (11/13/2009 4:14:46 AM)

It is time for everybody to realize that the Federal Government is not on our side in any shape or form. Check out the new U.S. Navy slogan.

That's right, Sanity. Why would we want to say something stupid like that our armed forces are a force for good. We should have gone with "The Navy: Do what we say or we'll bomb you back to the stoneage"

Wanting to be a force for good? How terribly liberal of them.

Sanity -> RE: It's time to wake up (11/13/2009 4:33:57 AM)

Might as well paint their warships pink and force the sailors to wear tutus

That would be closer to the truth, although I don't see it as a liberal vs. conservative issue. I thought that liberalism was for things like getting abortions, smoking weed, spending money we don't have, or throwing us in jail if we don't have health insurance, not creating a world police force. It's not the "A Force for Good" that is troubling to me, but the "Global" that is attached to it. "A Global Force For Good?" I can't wait to hear the new versions of that when they are singing it in the classrooms!

Sanity -> RE: It's time to wake up (11/13/2009 5:19:22 AM)

Maybe Obama felt threatened by their old slogan.

That concept of liberalism is a cliche.  Note that Bush's spending broke the bank and that some conservatives on this forums are trying to label him a "liberal" for his hyperspending.  Unfortunately for them, spending while hoping that the money fairy will bail them out is straight from Ronald ("Deficits don't matter") Reagan.

Of all the things that the government has done since Reagan, two Bushes, Clinton, and Carter took office, a Navy slogan is the least of my concerns.

Or changed the former slogan's last word to debt?

I agree with you 100% on all those points, although Woodrow Wilson started the ball rolling by signing the Federal Reserve Act. The impetus of concern is not with the slogan itself, but whether the slogan is effectively being accomplished or not.

housesub4you -> RE: It's time to wake up (11/13/2009 6:12:20 AM)

I could not agree more, a navy slogan is nothing compared to the mess we are in

DarkSteven -> RE: It's time to wake up (11/13/2009 6:14:23 AM)

Well, hell slogans reflect wishful thinking rather than reality.  Remember General Motors' "What's good for GM is good for the country"?  Or for that matter, a bunch of water, sweetened with corn syrup and loaded with artificial flavors and colors - "Coke's the real thing"?

Alphascendant -> RE: It's time to wake up (11/13/2009 6:33:46 AM)

Actually, the bailout money GM received would have been good for the country. Maybe when some of us are sitting hostage at a FEMA camp, those slogans might mean something different?

Alphascendant -> RE: It's time to wake up (11/13/2009 7:05:35 AM)

And that corn syrup that goes into almost every food item on the grocery shelves, the government says the the levels of mercury that most of it is tainted with will not hurt us. The slogans of a corporation are not quite in the same ballpark as the slogan of the forces commanded by the Federal Government. Instead of changing it again in twenty years they could save advertising expenses and change the slogans for all of the military branches to New World Order Now. He will bring change.

I agree, the government is not on our side. Whats being done is making things worse, and I'm far from alone in realizing this.

Consumer, trade data paints bleak picture

NEW YORK (Reuters) – U.S. consumer sentiment soured in early November on grim job prospects while a larger-than-expected trade deficit had analysts scaling back estimates for third-quarter U.S. economic growth.

The Reuters/University of Michigan Surveys of Consumers said on Friday its preliminary index of sentiment for November fell to 66.0, the lowest since August, from 70.6 in October. This was well below economists' median expectation of a reading of 71.0, according to a Reuters poll.

"Importantly, the decline in confidence was already in place before the announced increase in the unemployment rate to 10.2 percent on November 6," the Reuters/University of Michigan Surveys of Consumers said in a statement, adding "the likelihood that the sentiment index would drift even lower in the months ahead cannot be easily dismissed."

Within the survey, the 12-month economic outlook fell to its lowest since April. Separately, the government reported the U.S. trade deficit widened in September by an unexpectedly large 18.2 percent, the biggest monthly jump in 10 years, as oil prices rose for a seventh straight month and imports from China increased.

Liberal and Conservative bullshit aside I find it curious that you object to  "Global" after all it is the Navy....and their role is to project power.....its not like those Carrier Task Forces are floating in the Great Lakes ...no they sail the seven seas showing the falg and projecting American Power...or at least thats the idea....and has been since Teddy Roosevelt sent the Great White Fleet to Japan.
Surely you aren't suggesting that the Navy as currently constituted should remain in local waters?

When you're right, you're right, Sanity. If the conservatives were in charge things would be different. If the conservatives were in charge we'd...we'd...we'd have a better slogan for our navy!

Oh god, this is an urban legend (FEMA concentration camps).

By the same logic, GITMO is an urban legend.
